DAMN! I'd never seen this before until starting last week when i came across the whole set on here. This was an amazing special. The last two parts were really sad :( it's the first time I ever felt sorry for Eunice & now I understand why she was the way she was. She never got a fair shake. & It was weird to see Ken Berry playing Phillip knowing he'd play Vint on Mama's Family tv show. FINE acting by the whole cast. Thanks for posting this!
Classic Carol Burnett! I remember the show and Unice was only 1 of many characters that Carol played and all of them were brilliant. The Carol Burnett show should be re-released so that a whole new generation can get to know sketch comedy in it's finest moment. Thanks for the memories!
I never realized this existed and it swung me for the quite the loop since I did not know such a great comedy had such dramatic beginnings. I cried during the end because I see elements of Eunice in myself (afraid of loneliness, failure, and change). It's funny how you don't know what you have until it's gone.
This movie has the *opposite* message of It's A Wonderful Life: put others first and you'll have a miserable life. Interesting, though. Well written and acted. Definitely has a Tennessee Williams feel to it (down to the Tennessee Williams writer character with an ambiguous sexual orientation).
This was very depressing :( I love Carol Burnett and Eunice is definetly one of her best characters. This movie though was very sad. Goes to show great acting.
This was great! I know how Eunice feels about loaing her Mama. I lost my Mom 33 years ago and never really broke down, and i lost my dad this past summer and this scenc brought back so much pain, I sat here and cried, it tore me up to hear her "I want my Mama!", The entire cast was great. Love Carol,Vickie,Harvey,Betty and Ken.
@wweron07 This aired after The Carol Burnet Show ended in the spring of '78. It was an hour long special, shown later that year. What became Mama's Family aired in the early 80's but with few of the original cast, except of course Vicki Lawrence. I think Carol might have guested once. Joe Hamilton realised Mama could have her own show but unlike this Special and the skits from Burnet's show they never dealt with storylines ripe with the emotional baggage that Mama, Eunice and Ed did.
This show was so priceless!:) It didn't lower itself to the lowest common denominator and didn't insult the intelligence of its audience.Compare this with the ilk they show today! Very funny, very moving, very entertaining! Something tv has forgotten how to do. I know I guess my age is showing. I turn 45 today! lol
That's why Phil moved so quickly to get out of the house in the beginning of the movie. Because he end would up like Eunice if he didn't. He had to get out or the dysfunction of the family would have consumed him. But the irony is that he was being punished for being successful. And that's not fair. The ending shows that Eunice's life will never change. This is NOT a happy ending. It's a tragedy. Eunice will continue to be unfulfilled, unhappy, empty, and bitter. She will end up like her Mama.
The ending was sad. She got the chance to leave, and then she had to take care of her aunt. That would suck so bad. I felt so bad for her. In the serious she was made out as a drunk and loser, but here you actually see something more. This was great.
This is great! Very dark, Eunice morns her rabbit instead of her mother. Some serious issues going on there....shameful there was no Emmys. Eunice is so scared of life. She enjoys playing the victim and lives off the pity she gets from others. She is more interested in the playing the victim than living out her dreams.
My gosh, this was amazing! These characters have always been used for great comedy, but you wouldn't know such touching tragedy and drama could emerge too. This last section especially was pure brilliance! I have always loved Carol Burnett and Ken Berry, but they just blew me away in the last scenes! By the end of Berry's lecture, my jaw was totally dropped and I was left utterly impressed with his acting. I was so used to seeing him in F Troop, but his dramatic talents really sparkled here!
Incredibly powerful, and scary. Thank you so much for posting this!
The comment about Phil's "wittwe tantwum" was disgusting, however. He's right--Eunice has never let him finish a sentence in his life. It's always all about her. We can and should feel sorry for her, but at the same time see that she is also unbearable and self-absorbed. And his "tantrum" was really good advice for her.
I feel so bad for Eunice... it makes me evaluate myself and it's scary that she's sooo excited and then she just falls into that trap of doubt and allowing others to step over her. It's so sad..
3:10am and have been glued to this. I cried at the end--was so cheering for her to go. Brilliant from start to finish. Thank you so much, Tabstarkin for posting it!
I use to watch all the Family episodes on Carol's show and how i enjoyed them and laughed, but you always felt something real under all the humor. It was meant to be funny but you really felt the sadness of the characters. Now after watching all 9 of these it put all of those underline emotions into prospective, thanks, these characters where more than meet's the eye.
If you get the chance, read Carol's autobiography "One More Time." I've just finished it for the second time, and believe me you'll be shedding even more tears while watching these videos once you have read the book. I think you'll find that there are many, many parallels to be drawn between Mama's Family and Carol Burnett's real family. Makes the entire Mama's Family storyline heart wrenching to me now. Of course, I'm sure it doesn't help that I also identify with Eunice.
I watched this and loved it. That was just the same way that my mother died. I wasn't there either...she was at dyalasis, and a cold hearted nurse told us that she was still alive...only to find out later that she was gone.
I just finished watching all 9 parts....I'm still crying...when Eunice was crying and cried out, "I want my mama" I thought I would die, that was so heart felt......my goodness
I know exactly howEunice feels. I could feel her pain, when she says "I want my Mama". My mom passed away 32 years ago on March 10th and it still hurts so bad. Carol Burnette should have gotten an award for this performance
I have watched this in it's entirety no less than 6 or 7 times. I still can't get through segment 9 without crying. I'm not inserting an lol here either. I don't know what Carol Burnett taps into for that scene, but she even goes beyond the eunice character and transcends into a very real person, who is desperately hurt and angry. And sadly, such loss rings true with all viewers. What an awesome scene. She could have won an Oscar if the opportunity had ever come up, I know it.
It's too bad that after all of these years she is still crying about Fluffy. I'll bet that she didn't even clean his cage when he was alive..besides. She could take her part of the inheritance and bought three more rabbits. lol
Wow, I am familiar with the Mama's Family episodes, but I didn't even know this post Carol Burnett show existed. The acting was amazing, especially Carol Burnett's in scene's 8 and 9. And it's interesting to see how the writers added more seriousness to the usual comedy. A classic tragicomedy. Thanks tabstarkin for posting this.
I hadn't seen this since it first aired in '82, and watching it from Part One through Part Nine was such a special way to spend Christmas Eve. It's as much a tearjerker as it ever was, and I think the best part about it is getting to see them all REALLY act (especially Korman) instead of just being the usual goofy Family. Tab, I thank you for all your Burnett clips, but especially this. Happy Holidays.
Carol's acting is incredible in this segment. You really can't tell that it's an actress saying lines. It is so real and so raw. I don't know where Carol Burnett found that grief to draw on for this scene, but by God, it's there. Very, very realistic and very relateable.
Did you ever watch her weekly show when she answered her audience's questions? She tugged her ear so much that her fans would request her to tug it (her ear, that is) for them. lol
I've been watching the family sketches from the Carol Burnett Show over and over for years, but I never ended up watching this special until now. Thanks so much for having it up here, tabstarkin! I started tearing up as soon as the 1978 part started up and I knew mama was dead, and when Eunice broke down I started crying my freaking eyes out. Carol Burnett is just wonderful. <3
That last scene really shows where Eunice was coming from. I had the same feelings toward her as the rest of her family did (Get off your butt and do something!!)...until that last scene. She WAS doing something.
i dont know Eddie, she TRIED a few times thru the series ( see the episode with Madeline Kahn ) to get into acting and peruse her own dreams BUT Ed and Especially MAMA couldnt WAIT to knock her down and suck the life out of her in the process
seems like any Dysfunctional family the only way out of it is to GET out of it, IT being the FAMILY- but for most people thats a simple matter of economics- Eunice couldn't afford to move out on her own, but on the other hand these people WERE her Family
Why has Carol Burnett never won an Oscar or something? This woman can ACT! When she's running from room to room looking for Mama, and then she breaks down with the picture... I had chills. I can't say it enough; This sketch is very underrated, and I'm so happy to have seen it. Thanks, Tabstarkin!
Tabstarkin, thank you for putting this presentation up on YouTube. This was truely a great performance. When television is done right, programs like "Eunice" result.
I prefer this presentation of the Harper family over the numerous "Carol Burnett Show" skits. Rather than have the familarial dysfunction fly out from nowhere, this program gave you a better glimpse as to where it came from.
I'll admit I was disappointed at Eunice at the end. Sometimes, there are no happy endings.
While "Mama's Family" was fun, this "Eunice" special seemed to try exposing all the pent-up Harper family resentments, especially those of Eunice.
As a child I watched the "Eunice" skits on Carol's show, and couldn't get over how much they reminded me of MY grandmother and my aunt and cousins.
Now, forty-five year-old, it saddens me to realise that, take away those southern accents and I see so much of myself and MY relationship with my sister and my parents. This SHOULD be out on dvd.
I found the Eunice Special 1-9 amazing. This is the effect that true art is supposed to have on us(humans), and for all you critics with your negative comments, why don't you do something that really matters like Ms. Burnett has done instead sitting up watching youtube videos with nothing to do and doing nothing truly substantive with your own lives. You darn foolish _ _ _ es!!!
it is art in that it presents a range of widely known emotions within family life and showcases them in an interesting and relatable way. it provides release through both humor and a healthy dose of catharsis, and is an expression of a concept greater than itself, so really I don't see why you couldn't call it art.
but then again I'm a looney tune, too. and, man, does my rump feel like something's been biting on it. does anyone else's rump hurt?
I don't get what you mean. Philip was offering her a chance at a new life; he even endorses her absurd dream of becoming an actress. He says she can come live with him! Astonishing, since Eunice is so self-centered and tactless and ignorant. Eunice exults "alll rhaaaat!" at the end. The ending gave the impression that Eunice will finally be happy after all! Now THAT's what is "implausible."
You re right about Eunice's happiness being implausible. This is the same formula as most of the family sketches. Eunice always gets excited about something and then ends up disappointed by a sad turn of events. The ending moment wouldn't be as strong without that emotional switch. I've read your other comments. I'm sorry, but I think you missed the point of the movie.
Agreed, BEAU0519. The final scene lets us know that Eunice will continue the cycle she's been living all her life. "Someday" she'll move to NY/LA to be an actress. "Someday" she'll be free of responsibility so she can. But in the end, she sabotages herself by taking that one step and going to care for Aunt Ida, letting Phillip leave without her. And CYNTHIACHER, this is neither Renoir nor Manet, but it IS art! TV has had some very fine moments artistically, and this is certainly one of them.
Improbable is a better word. The final scene foreshadows that Eunice will continue the cycle she's been living all her life. "Someday" she'll move to NY/LA to be an actress. "Someday" she'll be free of responsibility so she can. But in the end, she sabotages herself by taking that 1 step and going to care for Aunt Ida, letting Phillip leave without her. This, of course, is neither Renoir nor Manet, but it IS art! TV has had some very fine moments artistically, and this is certainly one of them.
So, Cynthiacher, I'm among those who feel you missed the point of, if not the entire show, certainly the final scene. In a more deft and less heavyhanded way, we were shown that Eunice's life will never change. This was NOT a happy ending. Rather, Eunice will continue to be unfulfilled and unhappy. It was obvious to me, anyway.
I (my name is "Cynthiacher", by the way) missed the "pint?" Learn to spell, you twit. And I guess the audience missed the "pint" too, because their nervous laughter indicates they don't know if this is supposed to be funny or not. It's not. The whole "Eunice" special was just an unfunny rehash of old "Family" skits with a "serious" aspect thrown in.
their nervous laughter is exactly the point. it's posing the whole idea of the original family skit more in depth in order to be meaningful and expand on the basic character flaws everyone related to in the skits.
there is a very fine line between tragedy and comedy. the crossing of it was intentional.
The same day it worked, it was not a matter of refreshing Youtube had some issues that day. I have since seen the vid and that was 5 months ago....geeze
when will they ever come out with the rest of the seasons of mama's family. i have season one but the other seasons are not available.. anyone have any info on this.. thanks
This is Carol Burnett's masterpiece. The depiction of her tv family, especially her and Moma, mirror in so many ways my father's family. Take away the southern accents and you've got my aunt and my grandmother. Very real and very sad.
I saw this one time in Phoenix when it was aired and always regretting not recording it. Many great thanks for posting this. I wish they would release this on DVD.
ya, it works for me now. ionno wut happened but it works. if anyone has the same problem, try hitting the pause button the second the page comes up and let it load. That's what i did differently this time and it worked. don't know if that's wut did it, or if it just decided to work, but hey, give it a shot.
OK, come on, it's obviously not working for most of us. Can somebody at least respond to this post with a summary of what happens at the end? After all that's come before, now I feel as dejected about not seeing this as Eunice must have felt.
I had trouble with Part 9 but then deleted the browsing history and it played perfectly! I loved watching this after all these years! Thanks for posting!
what happens now? what happened to part 9? loved seeing the special, but where's the rest. This story was much darker then any other Harper/Higgens skit. so I suppose at the end Phillip calms her down, or she falls crying in his arms, or someone make a big dramatic closing speach, or does he just have her committed? I missed this back in 82.
Hmm, I don't understand why certain areas in the States can still see "Eunice" Part 9 but others can't... its perfect up here in Canada. I'm not sure what to do about this because YouTube still says it's up and running. Weird.
Here's what happens. Mama is dead. Ed comes to the house paying his respects. He tells Eunice he wants to be "friends" with her but all he wants is money from Philip. Ellen covets a lamp and a clock , enraging Eunice. Ellen then tells her that Mama took her pet rabbit Fluffy and had it skinned and dressed for them to eat at dinner. Eunice has a psychotic breakdown, and starts screaming "Mama! Mama! Where are you!? " Philip offers to take Eunice to live with him, which cheers her up. Awful!
That's right, I'd forgotten that. The phone call did make it seem like Eunice would still be stuck in her crummy hometown, with Aunt Ida or whoever taking Mama's place. That would be more in keeping with the hopelessness of Eunice's life which is partly her own fault. Anyway, I thought this special didn't know what it was supposed to be, a comedy or a drama. It rehashed old Family sketches and fell flat. I don't like it; I don't find it funny and the drama is heavy handed.
yeah. although shows like "mash" and "all in the family" would do the drama thing, i always didn't know how to take it. i'm expecting gloria to cry, not archie. this crossover in styles was 'perfected', in my opinion, on "coach", and now when a sitcom starts getting serious half way thru an episode, i say, "it's getting all 'coach'y", and change the channel.
That's a good criticism, and I can see your point. But I believe the original intention was for the drama to overcome the comedy; because the writer probably felt that the public was laughing at these people too much, and not seeing themselves in it enough; the whole idea was from the beginning to make people laugh, and think; think of how this crazy family may be like theirs; and too many would laugh at the dysfunction, but not see how they themselves are very similar(ego defense).
It was intended to be that way. I wish I had a perfect family but in reality I have to live with the family that on the one hand I head yet at the same time I can't stand for a multitude of reasons.
The only way to NOT be like Eunice is to overcome your fears and insecurities.
y'know, I'm grateful to have read the comments about eunice. WOW! Eunice never really wanted to be a singer or a dancer or an actress, or to marry Duke Reeves. She just wanted to live in a dream world.
Eunice was thoroughly convinced of her own worthlessness, and the dream world was the only place she felt safe: the only place she knew she wouldn't fail. And she married Ed because her perception of his worth matched her self-worth. She saw him as being as worthless as herself.
Poor Eunice. I really do feel for her. She just takes one bag of bricks to the head after another, and always has some pathetic reason to stay and retreat to her mess of a life. It's sad, to be honest.
They all really did an amazing job portraying some of the most important lessons in life in just an hour.
At about 3:15, where he has the wittwe tantwum for a minute and a half, I would've told him to shove it. Actually, I would've drowned him out with a whistle or airhorn first. It's not like he would have really helped her anyway.
What ever happened to personal responsibility? If she wanted to be an actress then she should have done what it took to do so on her own. You simply can't depend on others who don't share your dreams. It was her choice to marry a loser and have children, not his. MAKE BETTER CHOICES AND HAVE A HAPPIER LIFE!!!
Plausible postscript - Philip buys out Ellen's interest in the house and Eunice lives there until the day she dies, working at the dime store until she retires. Sad. Brings back reminders of my own Family. Each of us inherited over $200K from Grandma a few years ago, so my sister's kid could have gone to any college he wanted but he dropped out of high school...jail...prison. You just can't force people to be more than what they want to be.
possible - and isn't carol burnett some actress; eunice has touched so many raw nerves over the years. i'm not sure eunice wanted to act per se; she desperately wanted out of that life&family via duke reeves, hollywood or ? we are given to see that she probably doesn't have talent;her dream is as likely as ed's. i suspect that she knows this, and regretfully retreats into her old life;at least she'll still have the fantasy? "... some of us prefer illusion to despair" -nelson muntz, the simpsons
For a relatively simple skit on a variety show, "The Family" has a depth and complexity that makes it interesting and timeless. I think that's the amazing thing about this. And Carol's acting brought this pathetic creature to life in a way that has touched many people and made these simple plots have a life that is greater than the sum of the parts.
Thanks for posting all of this. I must say that after watching this I'll probably prefer the old Family skits over "Mama's Family" as well. I liked seeing Ken Berry play the smart driven son Phillip over goofball Vinton.
Hello Tabstarkin. Thanks so much for posting your Carol Burnett videos. Unfortunately Eunice (9 of 9) doesn't exixt for some reason. Could you try to upload it again or let me know of a way I can get it from you? BTW I'm partnered to a wonderful man also. Congradulations of finding someone to share this journey we call life with. Eddie
Tabstarkin, you have made my week. I remember watching this special when I was a kid and hadn't thought about it in years. What a treat! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Wow, i was hoping eunice fnally made it, stupid aunt ida, or whatever her name is. I'm n the u.s. and it finished just fine.Phil is so serious, I think I like him as goofy vinton better.
i just tried to upload my just downloaded copy as "eunice special #9 again" - as this is my first try at uploading it may not go thru? it's on mdhfan - my videos, so it says....
Any chance you can upload this video again? Make a new upload and call it the same thing and add Try 2 or Again at the end or something. That may work for those of us that can't see this one. :) Thanks for all your videos.
Can someone explain to me what happenes in the last ten minutes of this Special? Apperantly YouTube has left some of us with a cliffhanger and we would like to know how this segment ends.

Happy Holidays.
thedivinemisterm 2 years ago 2
Carol's acting is incredible in this segment. You really can't tell that it's an actress saying lines. It is so real and so raw. I don't know where Carol Burnett found that grief to draw on for this scene, but by God, it's there. Very, very realistic and very relateable.

faeglenn 2 years ago 2
The sit-com meets Greek tragedy. The
hero's fatal flaw is the failure to break free
from the dysfunctional family. (Eunice being
the hero.)
Best advice I ever got from a therapist. "Get
the toxic people outta your life."
You can't change other people's behavior,
but you are not required to be part of it. Not
even if it's your mama who is toxic.
Thanks for posting, Tabstarkin.

That last scene really shows where Eunice was coming from. I had the same feelings toward her as the rest of her family did (Get off your butt and do something!!)...until that last scene. She WAS doing something.
eddievalleytrailer 2 years ago 4
i dont know Eddie, she TRIED a few times thru the series ( see the episode with Madeline Kahn ) to get into acting and peruse her own dreams BUT Ed and Especially MAMA couldnt WAIT to knock her down and suck the life out of her in the process
seems like any Dysfunctional family the only way out of it is to GET out of it, IT being the FAMILY- but for most people thats a simple matter of economics- Eunice couldn't afford to move out on her own, but on the other hand these people WERE her Family

Sometimes, there are no happy endings.
revkrull 2 years ago 5

You consider this "true art?" Boy, are you a looney tune. I don't think you'd know true art if it bit you on the rump.
cynthiacher 2 years ago
it is art in that it presents a range of widely known emotions within family life and showcases them in an interesting and relatable way. it provides release through both humor and a healthy dose of catharsis, and is an expression of a concept greater than itself, so really I don't see why you couldn't call it art.
but then again I'm a looney tune, too. and, man, does my rump feel like something's been biting on it. does anyone else's rump hurt?

The tacked on "happy ending" where Phil offers to take Eunice to live with him in California is totally implausible.
cynthiacher 3 years ago
They did it so she would be let down in the end. Is it "implausible" for Eunice to be let down?
beau0519 2 years ago
I don't get what you mean. Philip was offering her a chance at a new life; he even endorses her absurd dream of becoming an actress. He says she can come live with him! Astonishing, since Eunice is so self-centered and tactless and ignorant. Eunice exults "alll rhaaaat!" at the end. The ending gave the impression that Eunice will finally be happy after all! Now THAT's what is "implausible."
cynthiacher 2 years ago
You re right about Eunice's happiness being implausible. This is the same formula as most of the family sketches. Eunice always gets excited about something and then ends up disappointed by a sad turn of events. The ending moment wouldn't be as strong without that emotional switch. I've read your other comments. I'm sorry, but I think you missed the point of the movie.
beau0519 2 years ago 4

Tre404 2 years ago 26
@Tre404
True, but this time Eunice chose not to change her life---anything from this point on is her own doing....

cyntiacher you missed the pint entirely so--- shut up bitch
birminghamoi 2 years ago
I (my name is "Cynthiacher", by the way) missed the "pint?" Learn to spell, you twit. And I guess the audience missed the "pint" too, because their nervous laughter indicates they don't know if this is supposed to be funny or not. It's not. The whole "Eunice" special was just an unfunny rehash of old "Family" skits with a "serious" aspect thrown in.
cynthiacher 2 years ago
their nervous laughter is exactly the point. it's posing the whole idea of the original family skit more in depth in order to be meaningful and expand on the basic character flaws everyone related to in the skits.
there is a very fine line between tragedy and comedy. the crossing of it was intentional.

what happens now? what happened to part 9? loved seeing the special, but where's the rest. This story was much darker then any other Harper/Higgens skit. so I suppose at the end Phillip calms her down, or she falls crying in his arms, or someone make a big dramatic closing speach, or does he just have her committed? I missed this back in 82.

Awful!
cynthiacher 3 years ago
you left out the part where she's on the phone. that's the real ending, not where you stopped describing it.
watty024 2 years ago
That's right, I'd forgotten that. The phone call did make it seem like Eunice would still be stuck in her crummy hometown, with Aunt Ida or whoever taking Mama's place. That would be more in keeping with the hopelessness of Eunice's life which is partly her own fault. Anyway, I thought this special didn't know what it was supposed to be, a comedy or a drama. It rehashed old Family sketches and fell flat. I don't like it; I don't find it funny and the drama is heavy handed.
cynthiacher 2 years ago
yeah. although shows like "mash" and "all in the family" would do the drama thing, i always didn't know how to take it. i'm expecting gloria to cry, not archie. this crossover in styles was 'perfected', in my opinion, on "coach", and now when a sitcom starts getting serious half way thru an episode, i say, "it's getting all 'coach'y", and change the channel.
watty024 2 years ago
That's a good criticism, and I can see your point. But I believe the original intention was for the drama to overcome the comedy; because the writer probably felt that the public was laughing at these people too much, and not seeing themselves in it enough; the whole idea was from the beginning to make people laugh, and think; think of how this crazy family may be like theirs; and too many would laugh at the dysfunction, but not see how they themselves are very similar(ego defense).
earp1673 2 years ago
It was intended to be that way. I wish I had a perfect family but in reality I have to live with the family that on the one hand I head yet at the same time I can't stand for a multitude of reasons.
The only way to NOT be like Eunice is to overcome your fears and insecurities.
swarlock 2 years ago
y'know, I'm grateful to have read the comments about eunice.
She saw him as being as worthless as herself.

burlapkwanzaa 3 years ago
