  • How much does the rifle cost?

  • @dasdew2 Depending on the condition. $350 - $600

  • Can we shoot anywhere with rifles in the USA ?

  • I forgot to mention that CCI #34 primers are good for this type of gun. Perhaps not as accurate as some bench rest primers, but they are designed to mil. spec to prevent slam fires, which they do quite well.

  • the hell was that clanging noise at 0:24?

  • @IllustriousSeven Most likely a computer tower or an old propane tank rolling down the gravel backdrop. Whatever it was I hit it just right to break it's balance and it tumbled down the gravel slope.

  • @cfhammargren Nice!

  • These are much better guns than most people realize. I like many of the features better than an M1A, which costs a lot more. It has good handling and only moderate recoil (with 7.5mm ammo).

  • @spraymalathionjerry The 7.5mm is a great round but hard to find. The recoil is light because of the muzzle break at the end of the barrel. The only problem I have with these is trying to figure out how to clean the gas blow back system so the corrosive military ammo doesn't eat up my gun.

  • @cfhammargren Yes, it is rather hard to find. However, if you load your own, you can use 6.5mm x 55mm cases quite easily. You have to trim 1mm off the length, and resize the case to get the new shoulder for the French round. It works great! And the price is right. Also, the French rifle takes .308 size bullets, which means huge variety. IRM 4895 powder works well, and I'm sure other types do too. Overall, an excellent rifle, and very underrated.

  • @spraymalathionjerry Thanks for the tip. This is already common knowledge for MAS collectors ;) I don't think I would load my own for a 49/56 until I get a crimper but I would definitely reload for my 36 and 36/51.

  • @cfhammargren Lee has a great die for this. While I like the reloading dies by all the major companies, Lee has a nice automatic crimping feature built into their new dies that works very well, and doesn't seem to degrade accuracy at all. Also, I think you have a point about the muzzle break on these rifles. The French muzzle break design seems short and simple, but it works extremely well.

  • @cfhammargren Maybe spraying some simple green into the tube?

  • This rifle is going to be in new Call of Duty: Black Ops, hmmm....

  • @nuttex I am definitely excited for that. I love to see old rifles in the collection appear in video games.

  • @nuttex i doubt it.

  • It is still just a MAS 49/56. I like my .308 conversion with FAL 20 round magazines better. I have fired 100 rounds continuously through it with no problem ; and I got mine free.

  • PP ammo is crap for MAS 49, the idiots used soft primers that cause slam fires with the original firing pin, which is the best type of firing pin. All they had to do is use Mil-spec primers CCI makes them. I think PP uses burdan system which means it's not good to reload the brass

This is not the gun for the buy it off the rack and a box of ammo and go shoot crowd. For those who reload to get it right and understand what their guns need to perform, it's one of the best battle rifles ever made

  • escobob is right- you can shorten the firing pin just a wee bit- that does sometimes work fine.

Using good ammo like Prvi Partisan is a wise move.

  • That's a nice clean rifle. I had a chance to buy one close to that nice off a guy at calguns last year but just didn't have the money. One of these days.......

  • Remedy for slam-fires: reload and use CCI #34 mil-spec primers. Sometimes even Prvi ammo will go pogo. OR let me rework and machine your bolt for a firing pin spring. Then you can use any ammo you want without fear.

  • Nice!

My 49/56 was rebuilt in '91, my Wife's in ''92. (Yes, we have matching His and Hers rifles. Aren't we just a sweet couple?)

Prvi Partisan ammo is OK, but reloading is better. A good 49/56 with tailored reloads will go down to 2 MOA.

    Great vid! Keep 'em coming!!

  • I now have a MAS 36 and a Mas 49-56!

  • Very nice rifle, i am actualy thinking of buying one in 7.5 I was wondering what kind of ammo do you use all i know of is Prvi Partizan making them.but can't find soft point. By the way how are the sites on em?

  • Not sure what kind of ammo it is, but it's mostly army surplus nickel jacketed ammo. I also found army surplus copper jacketed AP rounds on machine gun links ordered through Tapco about ten years ago. Very corrosive but they were consistent and fired very well in both bolt action and semi auto MAS rifles. I've never seen soft point rounds. I'm not a big fan of the peephole sights, though my father could hit a small target at 200 yards with ease so it's not that bad.

  • I got a 7.5mmx54 French MAS in a lot sale a while back. Brand 95% condition..but it slam fires sometimes. And sometimes burst fires from 2-4 rounds. Superb gun tho after i got it out of the shop.

  • If you can, try to find a titanium firing pin. Slam fires will be less likely because there is less mass in the pin to slam against the primer during free float. McCann manufactured great pins, but they stopped in the last couple of years due to low demand of their 49/56 .308 conversion rifles.

  • Read somewhere to to shave of .5 mm of a steel firing pin and it would fix slam fire

  • I read about some guy who's AR15 fired off a 3 round burst due to a bad sear and he got arrested for having an illegal machine gun. Last I read he was convicted and in prison.

  • @disturbedone5009

The sear was only bad after he had been monkeying with it.

  • Actually it was due to the sear wearing out from use. It was an old AR so that caused the sear to fail.

  • nice you should shoot the mas36

  • I have two MAS36's and one MAS36/51. They are very nice rifles but not as fun to shoot as the 49/56 :)

  • I must congratulate you for your french. Very readable. Keep enjoying your MAS! They're good rifles.

  • I agree totally.

My MAS 49/56 is fun to shoot and acurate. I think of it as the 'Poor Man's M-14/M1A'. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in buying one.

Prvi Partizan French ammo is about 50 cents per round and that is only a little more expensive than what surplus .308 NATO rounds cost these days.

It's not much more expensive to shoot than a CETME or an FN-FAL, and it'll cost about 1/2 what you would pay for either of those 2 rifles (and a 1/4 of what you'd pay for an M1A).

  • the french mas are a veery good gun

they have in service to 1949 to 1986 ( for police to 1986 to 2006 )

they have the result to verry long reserch

the m16 use the gaz operating system of the mas 49-56

the m 14 are the adaptation of the garand

the garand use the gaz operating system of the mas 1917

    it's a french gun to

    sorry i am french

    so my english are bad

  • I just picked up one through an auction lot of multiple rifles, its flat ass new made in 1972, cant find much on values and curious if you know what they run for in value state side.

  • I dunno actual value unissued _and_ unfired. I would like to think my unissued and nonfired 49/56 is worth $1k and the one ni the video worth about $600 but that's just me :)

  • nice gun

  • I want one!

  • I highly recommend it if you can find one. Avoid the .308 conversions if you can, I've heard the majority of them were poorly converted.

  • Yea that's what I've heard as well.

  • Completely true. I have an original 7.5 and it works beautifully, but I've seen some really faulty .308s and some fine .308s. Best to go with the original on this rifle.

  • And 7.5 French is balistically similar to 7.62 NATO anyway.

  • they are very close... 7.5x54mm vs. 7.62x51mm

  • The conversions were done crappily by Century, who does crappy conversions in general. They used dull reamers, and the chambers are...um..."rugged" is a good word. Plus the extractor is all screwed up. Avoid and go with an original one, yes.

  • Great Gun. Love my MAS!
