Hi Jean, not sure what you mean by the undesirable black shiny surface, I would think that is what people are looking for. Please explain further. This is tricky, sometimes you have to put it back into the electric kiln and burn off the carbon and start again. @barbarajallen Hi. It looks like melted plastic - not those lovely deep black smokey marks that one aims for. Somewhere - cant recall - I saw or read about this and thought 'aha - I knew they were not the goal of smoke firing'. I have not done many pit firings but my first firings were so much better than the last couple and I am becoming disheartened. The black seems to sit on the surface, not penetrating. I use earthenware with terrasig - its almost like it is too burnished for penetrating.
