  • i cry everytime i watch this...it just brings back wonderful memories of how great and wonderful everything was back in the 90's :'(

  • On the date of your Peoplemover video it says January 2nd 1995 and I can see the Skyway ride in the background, so I think Skyway closed in 1995 OR your Peoplemover video date is wrong.

  • Never forget u Skyway.June 23 1956,Nov 9 1994.! 17 years.Still the most missed ride in Disney history..Vonroll forever!

  • Thanks for posting this! I was born in 1991 and went to Disneyland once when I was a baby, but went more often when I was four or five and went every Sunday since up until I was 15. So needless to say, there's no way that I could remember the Skyway. I heard about it, but always wondered what it was like. So thanks again for this cool little bit of Disneyland history :)

  • always wondered what the ropes connected to the matterhorn were for. coll how you go over the wter

  • the old station is still there.

  • @rextony22 Is it?

  • @rextony22 Is it?

  • This proves the Vonroll tramway company of Bern Switzerland built A great ride.We all miss the Skyway..Old Vonroll #5.Rest in peace Skyway.I hope Walt Disney is riding you in the clouds above.

  • I was there too..rode in the last gondola right behind the media.in front of them was micky and minney in orange 40..very sad..Vonroll type 101..

  • Why did they take this ride out?

  • look Jafars Castle at 0:26

  • Aw, the music fits this so perfectly and makes me miss Disneyland even though I'm 45 minutes away. I miss the Skyway, but this makes me appreciate what we still have. <3

  • Thanks for the share of Yesteryear at Disneyland.

  • this vr people mover

  • That was beautiful with the music and all! :'-) This is why Disneyland will always be special and never replaced by anything in my life! Yesterdays Tomorrow Land is so much better! Cheers~

  • I wouldn't call it "the original Skyway", these are the modern aerial tramways, not the "buckets" of the original ride.

  • so where was the Tomorrowland station and what took it's place? and where is the fantasyland station at? my friend went last month and couldn't find the fantasyland station.

  • @zac613 The Tomorrowland Station was between Autopia and the Innoventions building. I don't think it was replaced by anything.

And the Fantasyland Station is to the left of Dumbo the Flying Elephant and North East of Big Thunder Mountain. It's hidden behind some trees but you can see it through small openings.

  • @Benstudio13 ah ok. thanks. Ill let my friend know.... she's thinking about going again next week.

  • i liked going on it when i was a kid, my kids didnt beleive me when i told them that baskets filled with people would go through the matterhorn, they seen this and they said that was cool.

  • disneyland's skyway was better cuz of the Matterhorn! Heil Harold the Yeti, or he'll eat you!

  • I honestly think Disneyland should consider re-theming this ride and bringing it back as Mr. Fredericks house... (the flying house with the ballons from the movie UP!) I think that would be awesome!!!<3

  • Ahh, brings back memories for me! Thanks.

  • How come the submarines are yellow? I thought they were always silver until the repainted them for the nemo ride...

  • @acpowers13 they were painted from gray to yellow in the late 80s, then the original ride closed

  • why did they close it...it looks like a wonderful ride i never got to experiance it i wish i did

  • @littleteetee1 From what I understand they closed it because stress cracks were found in the support tower inside the Matterhorn. Since replacing the tower would almost certainly require tearing apart the mountain, it was probably easier to close the ride.

  • Thanks for uploading this. Before YouTube, the Disney Sing-Along songs video "Disneyland Fun" was my only glimpse of what Disneyland was like back then. Today, ride through videos on here show that and what it's like now and make me wish I could be there. I'm scared of most rides that go at great heights but not any rides similar to the Skyway. Wishing I could have really ridden it. :(

  • Bring it back!

  • Thank the lawyers and "risk management" for closing this wonderful ride!

  • No one ever died on this ride, one guy jumped off once was ok but tried to sue disneyland after that and lost

  • I miss the Skyway at Disneyland - it will always be my "Happy Place". Thanks for the memories. =)

  • 1994....god....

the 90's were the best years....everything was so great back then....i'm 26...and this video alone gave me a frog in my throat =')

  • @dingo1339 Me too ! I'm 26 and i had to look this up because I was at Disneyland today and my friend mentioned about this ride and I TOTALLY forgot it ! I remember riding this ride as a kid... I'm sad it closed...

  • That thing got a lot of people killed.

  • @CAinfowarrior No one ever died on the Skyway. That's all urban legends.

  • the song is nice.

  • 400 people died? No. Some kid was screwing around on the ride and fell to his death. There was no terrorist attack.

  • @dingo48307 No kid died on the Skyway. It's an urban legend.

  • I miss the Skyway at Disneyland. Thank you for posting this video on youtube. I'm trying to remember when the last night I rode on the skyway was. I think it was sometime in the late 90's. When did they close the Skyway ride?

  • they say in november 9 1994 terrorist attacked the matterhorn which destroyed the skyway and the people mover but the matterhorn was still standing. and they say over 400 people died. i read this in an article in the website in the history of disneyland if you guys want the link please dont mind messaging me for the info for i could give you the link because i cant post inks on the comments.

  • I always wondered what happened to this ride.

  • Awwww.... A Whole New World! I used this song for my Qunice when me and dad did our dance.

I fianlly saw the Skyway station at Disneyland when I went for Thanksgiving last year, I spazzed. I tried taking a picture but trees were in the way and it was blocked off. Memories to those who rode it and history to the newer generation if Disneyland history lovers.

  • The holes in the Matterhorn have been closed up.. not a single trace that skyway ever existed through that part of the ride. Thank You for the good memories.

  • @77mr They haven't been closed up all the way. You can still see them very clearly on the Tomorrowland side while waiting in line for Nemo.

  • Dsineyland lol

  • did they close up the hole in the matterhorn?

  • @lakers6225 Partially, but you can still tell the Skyway once went through it.

  • @AdrenalineAddict610 im going tomorrow i'll have to look

  • I LOVE living in California so much.

  • oh the memories

  • i miss this ride it use to be my favorite ride ever and i wish it hadnt closed and i love the musice playing

  • It's kinda sad cuz one of the main reasons this closed down was because tourists were being immature and throwing objects from the skyway onto people below, It was kinda cute how Mickey and Minnie went on the ride the last time it ever ran before they demolished it.

  • Nov 9th 2010 Rode the San Diego Zoo Vonroll Skyride in your memory..Love and miss ya Skyway!!!

  • Disneyland Skyway group on facebook.Pictures, links and info on how the skyway ran and more..

  • typo spotted!! The begging says Dsineyland

  • wow i didn't even realize it was gone... the last few times i went i didn't even notice

  • the only time I went on this was when I was 4 on the year it closed

  • can i use this on my facebook page called Bring Back the Disneyland Skyway?

  • @gdkstormy I already have one..Vonroll type 101 skyrides and the Disneyland Skyway.Come join up

  • its Aladin Castle at 0:28

  • BRING BACK THE SKYWAY!

  • This video is sad. especially at around 2:35. its like the people mover is riding off into the sunset, forever. :( almost everything in this video are not there anymore. I sure did love those rides.

  • This ride seemed very relaxing.

so why did they take it off? was it because of money?

  • The music is perfect! My dad told me that when he was young he would ride this ride and they would sometimes drop pennies to see if they hit somebody. My mom said that it was fun to yell out random names to see who looks up. The PeopleMover looks neat too.

  • haha everything is different in this video, except autopia!!!

  • My favorite part about the Skyway was the fact that the buckets got to fly right thru Matterhorn mountain.

  • I think I rode this once when I was a toddler. Don't remember much, except the conscience fear of falling out of a tiny bucket (suspended on a wire) to be splattered to bits on the pathways of Disneyland. Yah...no fond memories of this ride.

  • June 23rd Happy Birthday VonRoll Type 101.Otherwise known as The Disneyland Skyway!!The world misses you..

  • Who would even think of jumping off this thing?

  • @Benstudio13 kids? :O)

  • @digitalmckracken little kids I bet.

  • @Benstudio13 the guy was cleaning and detailing each of these cable car and then some one started this ride and the guy was carried away and then he sliped off and fell.

  • @sideslide23 I know but that was in DisneyWorld. In Disneyland a man fell off on perpouse so he could get money from Disney but other than that no one else was injured or killed in Disneyland.

  • @Benstudio13 do they still have them at Bush Garden Theme Park in Florida?

  • @sideslide23 Yes they do

  • Im only 13 so yea ive never been on it, but it would be cool if I could. Many people have told me that you can still see it by the Matterhorns, I have no clue if thats true, but Ill see when I go in August! 0 0 lol my poor attempt at a mickey mouse face =P O

  • i have never seen this ride hmmmm

  • @faith67921 Well how old are you? Because this ride was taken out in November of 1994. I never got to ride it either.

  • I almost fell ouut of one those buckets seriously I almost lost my life as child because some idiot cast member told me and my cusins it was Okay to shake it while in mid air good riddens

  • @omegamer09 i dont believe ya..

  • @vonrollskyway1 belive wut u want

  • @omegamer09 i was one of the lead mechanics on that vonroll vr 101.Dont tell me that.1990 to 1994.Missed forever.

  • @vonrollskyway1 and im pretty sure u knew how fragile those gondolas were and how many peple died on those

  • @omegamer09 No one ever died on the disneyland skyway..get your facts strait.

  • @omegamer09 the cast members would NEVER tell you to shake the cart while in mid-air, I think its a case of "selective hearing", you heard what you wanted to hear (or your cousin told you it was a cast member and it wasnt and he's to blame) either way, nobody at the park would risk a lawsuit telling young kids to deliberately shake the cart... I think you were daydreaming that day.

  • @omegamer09 now, the parking attendants at Downtown Disney are completely retarded, they pointed us to drive in circles and all the lanes with available parking were coned off so my girlfriend got out of the car - FLUNG those parking cones into an unused parking area and I turned right down a lane and easily found a parking spot, we had cars behind us that followed suit too - I kinda wish i had my girlfriend on video throwing parking cones - that was hella funny!!

  • i was either three or four when i road this. i remembered it too.

  • this looks really cool!!! too bad i was like 3 years old when they closed it, so i never got to ride it : (

  • i was 9 when they closed this down I rode it a week before they shut it down.

  • i went on this ride once. when i was 3. and i loved it. just sat in it with my grandpa and my dad.. love you and miss you dad.. now that i'm 19 i wish i could ride it again to truly appreciate it in a new way. sadly that won't happen. :(

  • Thanks for posting this I got to ride the skyway on my list Trip to Disneyland in 1991 This along with all the things hat are now gone in Tomorrowland brought a tear to my eye. I am taking my 16 year old son to Disney this Summer and some of the things I miss most like this and the people mover he will never get to experience. Just very sad

  • @Afeenast the PeopleMover tracks are still there, Rocket Rods only lasted for two years so its possible tat they might do something with the old PeopleMover Tracks when they renovate TomorrowLand again. when we were there in march 2010 one of the employees told me they knew Tomorrowland totally needed an update... so hopefully People Mover will return on the next remodel?

  • @digitalmckracken they're thinking of doing a sort of tron based thing on that. I hate how tomorrowland is based on comic stuff though now. when walt disney made it, it was based on science and stuff :D to bad i wasn't even alive when it was actually like that.

  • @Kylie66100 i totally remember that there was one room when you were on Peoplemover that you saw the entire cycle chase scene from Tron as you were moving, it was projected against a wall.

I also miss that Microscope ride where you stare up into the giant eyeball (cant recall what the name was but i have watched it on youtube)

  • @Kylie66100 Adventures through Innerspace was the ride I was thinking of..

look up Forgotten Disney on youtube.... theres a ton of rides that dont exist anymore. you can see how they were back in the day.

  • I rode on it the day it closed

  • me too..nov 9 1994 wednesday.6:23 pm

  • The ride is gone cause of people were disrespectful spiting throwing things and geting high.If you noticed theres hardly any inclosed skyways let,Theres one in Santa cruz but your feet hang down..Its only for 2 people and its not inclosed

  • there are 12 vonroll skyrides left in the usa.2 alone in san diego...you can still get the disneyland skyway feel at the san diego zoo and at seaworld san diego...both vonroll type 101 skyrides!

  • @mjmmorales Disney actually closed it to conserve operating costs for the opening of Indiana Jones. They did the same thing to the Motor Boat Cruise when Toontown was close to opening.

  • i take my love and joy of the skyway to my grave with me when i die..i will allways cherris the great memories with you..my last remaining memory of my father..miss you forever..the day they took you out of disneyland, took out a piece of my heart and childhood..never forgive michael eisner..miss ya skyway..

  • i miss this ride they shut it down after i came when i was 5 it was one of my favorite rides cause you could see everyone i miss it soooooooooo much

  • I actually left a part of me in Disneyland from this ride. I was leaning over the rail, looking at the ground and we hit a bump from one of the towers and *BING*, I chipped a tooth on the rail. I am actually tonguing the chip as I type this =P.

  • As a new high school graduate in the summer of 1985 I worked at Disneyland for a number of months. I was assigned to Fantasyland as an attractions host. I LOVED working at the Fantasyland Skyway station - we got to wear lederhosen and nice cotton 'blouses'. So sad to see Skyway gone. We probably had to detain maybe 5 sets of kids per day because we saw then spitting, or rocking the cabins. Kids just goofing off.

  • That was one of my favorite rides when I was a kid! it was the best way to get from one side of the park to the other. I wonder why I was closed down

  • @jlhoyt best way to get across the park..love and will allways miss ya skyway..

  • Wasn't this ride closed cause of people in the ride spitting down at other people? This brings back so many memories...DLR in the 90's (:

  • long live the skyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!love ya and miss ya!15 years gone but not forgotten

  • I miss the Skyway a lot now. It was a great people-watching ride, and it gave you great views of most of the east side of Disneyland. The view of Fantasyland at night was colorful and beautiful. And it could save you a lot of time walking through crowded walkways. The San Diego Zoo and Sea World in San Diego are both still operating theirs. Sea World's goes over the water of the bay. The Zoo's goes over a deep canyon and you are really high off the ground at that point.

  • 15 years ago today

and i wasnt even boen either

  • beautiful music I wasn't born when it closed down

  • yes the san diego zoo still operates..

  • I wander, does the San Diego zoo still have this.

  • this wouldve been awesome to see!

  • I loved this ride when I as kid!! Thanx!!

I miss living in California so much..

  • @jimmydcap I used to live in Fresno Calfornia, lived there for 19 years but now I'm living in Phoenix AZ and it sucks there.

  • I miss this ride. Now tomorrowland sucks without it. They took out Peoplemover, Rocket Rods, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Adventure Thru Inner Space. Why can't Disney just bring these good old rides back. If they are returning the Country Bear Jamboree, they should bring back Peoplemover, Skyway, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and ATIS.

  • They've took down the skyways in all the disneyland mark, not just Disneyland California, it include WDW and any other disneypark. because there unsafe, and has too much problem, they had a cable car vehicle fell off the Cable from the bad gusty winds so they decided to scrap them all.

  • it wasnt actually that dangerous, and no car fell off a cable.

what happened was that a man purposely fell from one of the buckets into a large tree. The act was premeditated and disneyland won the case.

the ride was closed shortly thereafter due to unknown reasons.

  • no problems with the vonroll type 101 skyrides...the same design of ride STILL runs to this day...since 1945 the vonroll vr101 has transported over 150 million people world wide..how in the heck does a grip that has a 1000 tons per square in force fall off a 26 mm cable??talk out of your a@$..yes..

  • 150 Million world wide, this include Ski Lift, Cable Cars, and something similar to this world wide.

  • just the vonroll vr101 has transported that many people..this is not including there jig back trams, all other vonroll lifts..just there revolutionary vonroll vr101 grip

  • Great video! Thanks for sharing! So many memories. I miss the old Tomorrowland. It really was the world of motion. The first attraction I trained on was Autopia, and the last I was trained on was Skyway. Thanks for the memories!

  • Maybe they'll restore it as an UP version in California adventures.

  • tomorrow land is ruined. they got rid of the skyway, peoplemover/rocket rods, the rocket jets, and they replaced the submarine voyage with god awful nemo stuff. what happened? whenever i go to disneyland now i avoid tomorrowland with the exception of space mountain

  • You're forgetting Captain Eo. And Star Tours is always AWESOME!

  • thanks so much! what a great flashback. (and the people mover too!) made my day. hunter

  • what i wouldn't do to have those back and have that giant gapping hole in the matterhorn... lol

  • why did they take this out?!?

  • Jessie23451: Because it didn't comply with the "Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990".

  • stress cracks inside the matterhorn.the ada is a joke..the same rides still operate all over.vonroll type 101s.

  • Vonrollskyway1: I'm not sure what your saying. Is what your saying is that this ride still operates at Walt Disney World as of today? As for me I've never actually been to WDW, but I don't think this ride goes through the Matterhorn there. Or does it? And is that the reason they took it down there aswell? Anyway, thatnks for the info.

  • I'll field the answer here.

Walt Disney World has indeed removed their skyways too. I've heard because of some lawsuit where a kid jumped/fell/was pushed out of a bucket and landed in a tree.

Personally, I loved the Skyways, and anyone who fell from a bucket, must've ignored the 'Remain seated at all times' warnings.

Oh and incidentally, WDW doesn't have a Matterhorn. Only Disneyland CA has a Matterhorn Bobsled ride.

  • Now Your answer makes more sense than vonroll's.I don't think Disney would take out the Skyway for stress cracks in the Matterhorn, especially when WDW doesn't have a Matterhorn.I still believe that the Skyway was removed in both parks because of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.There have been many deaths in Disneyland attributed to guest misconduct, and many of those rides are still in operation today. Thanks for the info DMD85.Always good to hear different thoughts and ideas.

  • You're very welcome. It's entirely possible that the Disabilities Act was the end of the Skyways, although, I recall the skyway buckets being big enough, and strong enough to hold wheelchairs and the bucket was stopped prior to anyone climbing inside. So I don't know how the Disabilities Act could put out the Skyways as being in "vialation" but idk.

It's still a tragedy to me, a great ride was lost forever.

  • i know that disney world didnt have a matterhorn..disneyworlds vonroll vr101 had a 90 degree turn station.the 1st of its kind in the world on a vr101 vonroll skyride.the disability act had NOTHING to do with it..disneyland had stress cracks inside the 4 8 sheave roller batteries supports inside the matterhorn.disneyworlds reason is more than likely due to disneylands removing there vr101 which parts were interchangable except for the jaws inside the vr101 grip...

  • this is too painful to watch

sometimes i wonder whether you can stay a kid forever

say in an ideal world we would never have to work again... we that far technologically advanced... and if i never studied... could i be happy and entertained with a childs brain until death or would everything get old eventually and be bored by the time im 30 kind of like it is in todays world

  • this was a time when disneyland and the world in general was a happier place to be.long live the great disneyland skyway.old vonroll vr101.you will allways fly high above disneyland in our mind..

  • I went on this once when I was 4 in 1994, after that they took in out.

  • I Loved this ride and it sucks they removed it. I miss this ride too.

  • I remember this ride. It was my families shortcut to tomorrowland because you got to sit down and it was only a 5 minutes wait in line. I miss them. :(

  • They have something similar called the Monorail.

    Well kinda hah

  • omj ur right i never though that before

  • Hahah right?

You can still see some of the park high up.

  • Yah but you forgot the whole part about going through the Matterhorn. =P

  • Youre so right.

But the Monorail goes inbeteween hotels haha, but i understand its not the same.

  • Looked nice. It would be nice to have it come back again.

  • i wish disneyland still looked like that! ]:

  • vonroll built such a great attraction!the disneyland skyway.the disney company did a huge cover up!similar ride still operate to this day without ada compliant complaints.the san diego zo and seaworld san diego still operate vonroll type 101s to this day.same exact ride as the great disneyland skyway.even quoted by classic ride imagineer Bob Gurr.the skyway should have never been removed!walt disney loved his skyway!

  • I remember those rides. I came to Disneyland one day and both rides where gone. I miss them sometimes. I never got a chance to ride RocketRods. They replaced the Peoplemovers and now they are gone.

  • Spell check.....?

  • this is how disneyland SHOULD look! bringing back the subs is a start. now bring back this, peoplemover, and put the rocketships back where they belong! on top of the pm loading station!

  • The subs aren't the same. I vaguely remember riding them when I was young, right before they took them out. Now it's Nemo and it's just not as cool as the old ride was. Maybe, however, it's just nostalgia clouding my vision. Being a kid was fucking awesome.

  • @prophetoftru7h

nope, i said the exact same thing... the Nemo ride is just clips from the movie projected on flat screens... the subs move but if you think about it, they really dont even have too anymore, since you're seeing "a trick" and not the real animatronic underwater mermaids and other critters....

  • Oh wow. Submarines. Skyway. Peoplemover. It's nostalgiarama over here.

  • Oh yeah, 1994 Dsineyland at the opening. Good spelling there.

I miss this ride a bunch, and was happy to have been able to go on it a bunch over the years. This is a perspective of Disneyland that you don't have an opportunity to film anymore.

On the other hand, I'm happy they got rid of the Peoplemaker. I never was fond of getting dragged onto that ride.

  • I RODE THIS HELLA WHEN I WAS TINY yay I got to be apart of it

  • Disneyland puts lots of time and effort into the rides and the scenery and even the characters suits, and thats what i love about it : )

  • lucky for you all. the skyway was closed when i went there. duh! i was born in 1994 so i never got a chance to experience it and i am a total disney fanatic! like im the #1 fan of disney. ask me anything and i know it!

  • yeah so am i i know disney behind my back

  • wanghhhhh...so so so sad

  • I love, love, LOOOVE that you chose "A Whole New World" as the background music for this - ESPECIALLY the sweet instrumental version. It made me cry, and I'm being very serious.

I really miss the skyway and the WEDway Peoplemover.

  • omjonas me too i started to cry and sing alone

  • The old disneryland seemed to be more family-oriented... with the old relaxing and "scenic" rides like the SkyWay and PeopleMover.. now it the only moderately relaxing ride would be the submarine ride.. THey should bring back all these slow rides.

  • People were more responsible when the ride first opened and behaved themselves. Disney could'nt have that ride today.

  • lol me to

  • this would've been fun to ride :/

lol;; too bad i was born like two years after they took it down

  • When the Disneyland Skyway closed, the holes in the Matterhorn were filled in and the supports were dismantled within weeks.

  • The Disneyland Skyway was removed on November 9th, 1994 due to stress cracks in the matterhorn roller battery supports. At Disneyland, the Fantasyland Skyway station remains but is off limits to guests and completely empty (no machinery. However, the Tomorrowland Skyway station has since been demolished.

  • That's the original Sub Voyage. They just repainted the subs from grey to yellow.

  • how long ago was this? the finding nemo has just opened last year and when i went to disneyland i never saw the skyway ride

  • Why did they close the ride?

  • they closed in 1999 after a 66 year-old man fell while cleaning the station platform when the ride was accidentally turned on, the man was in the path of the ride vehicles, and grabbed a passing gondola in an attempt to save himself, then he lost his grip and fell 40 feet, landing near the Dumbo ride.He died shortly after being taken to a local hospital.

  • omg, r u cereal? r u telling the truth? : O
