I don't get it, animals in Chernobyl don't suffer from the effects of radiation due to their relative short life span. @Trollawk ye, i mean there vids were u see fishes wich are strange looking ( may cuz of the radiation :O) and still they can dive in the water so no matter to taht ye
@Trollawk USSR stopped building nuclear power plants after Chernobyl. Most safety about Nuclear reactors and radiation itself are from USSR. This had to happen or else we still be building unsafe Nuclear reactor designs from 1960s.
Patrick Moore (co-founder of Greenpeace) used to agree with this video but now advises that: "thirty years on, my views have changed, and the rest of the environmental movement needs to update its views, too, because nuclear energy may just be the energy source that can save our planet from another possible disaster: catastrophic climate change."
Nuclear energy is the way to go... when done safely and correctly. As other users have said, humans are growing exponentially, and green energy's (solar and wind) 15% efficiency isn't going to help. I know people fear that which they don't understand, but read up on nuclear energy. It is by far the best way to go when environmental impact, cost, and efficiency are all taken into account.
This will just keep happening and if Ukraine is still dealing with this one then I feel that the next one could become more of a disaster and cause earth a lot of problems in the future.
@74project:The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed over 200.000 people. After Chernobyl, less than 60.000 died because of cancer, but about 6 million suffered mutations/were born with malformations.Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed more people because the bombs were dropped in two big industrial centers of Japan, while Chernobyl was a little town, but the radiation levels from Chernobyl were much higher and had tragic consequences in the environment of the area and the babies born back then!
I hope this happens to Iran's nuclear program... all those fuckers should die, not including the innocent people there i know, duh, but there is NOT a whole bunch of innocent people in the middle east.... im just sayin, i was over there in 1991 and 5 years after 9/11 . not going to respond to replies.
Nuclear energy can be used safely. Canada, Japan, some EU nations for instance, use CANDU fuel, which is natural (as opposed to enriched) uranium eliminates the potential for this type of disaster. Because the concentration the of the 235 isotope is much lower, the plutonium concentration as a result of the fission can never reach critical mass, which leads to a meltdown. The bi-products, also cannot be used to produce nuclear weapons, for the same reason; not enough plutonium.
noone is cleaning up after chernoby desaster, ukrane dosent have such amount of money to do it,for 25 years radiation is leaking out of the reactor and noone cares except green peace.
Uh...you forgot all the Nuclear plants in canada. Including the worlds largest Bruce Power. Though our reactors are CANDU's and are the safest in the world, so many that's why.
This, is the type of video that deserves a million views. Not Baby, not Friday. Don't slam me for this comment, just because I'm actually making a correct observation. Would you rather be one of the many deformed, or worse still, dead due to the radiation effects? I'm not ignorant, neither are many people out there. And yet, media still treats us as kids, only promoting the advantages of a nuclear plant, and downgrading the disadvantages. Look at the severity of a disadvantage gone bad then.
to be honest, yeah chernobyl was really bad, but modern reactors today, not operated by the soviets are far far safer and have much better technology. What many don't know is that the RBMK reactor used in chernobyl was extremely flawed in its design. The control rods were slowly lowered during the emergency stop, the reactor had a manual override to automatic safety systems, the reactor only had one concrete casing instead of the two found in almost every other reactor.
Solar Panels and Windmills I live near a windmill farm and I have a solar panel on my house, its just that it cost about 10 grand for a decent sized solar panel and not everyone can afford that. The problem is there are too many broke people otherwise everyone would have a solar panel on their house like me. And we have had it since 2000 wake up people get a solar panel
Nuclear power has some risks, but nuclear plants are much safer now than they once were. They don't release any nasty chemicals and can provide a very large amount of power for a long period of time. We can partially switch to some renewable sources, but unless we find something more efficient, sticking with nuclear seems the best choice
nuclear powerplants are at the oment the best potion to gain energy....it wouldn't be cheap to turn them off....deconstruct them and so on.....you know? and if you turn them off, many people get no jobs and so....
and, the nuclear energy brings the most energy of all powerplants we have on this hell of a planet....
Greenpeace. Job good in saving the earth. FYI the world is fucked all ready. Chernobyl was a accident. They were testing reactor 4 and the staff put the control rods in to deep and the uruinium reacted with the reactor. So the rods could not have been lifted which would have caused the reactor to cool down. So stop bitching about some nuclear accident when more polution is made by cars.
@Facebook715 the opposite happened. They were testing it, and yes they put the control rods in too deep as part of the test, but instead of following protocol and stopping the test, they continued. however to bring the power back up they had to bring the rods really far out of the reactor, meaning that it made more power. then there was a power surge. because the rods were too far out the reaction became very powerful, and the rods were too slow to calm it down again. that lead to the explosion
nuclear energy is the cleaniest form of energy there is. 19% of the united states's energy is from nuclear fission. a nuclear power plant does not emit carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, or nitrogen oxides like oil commonly does. YES, nuclear energy can be dangerous but this is 2011 not 1980, we are well aware of what not to do in a nuclear power plant.
@MissyJLawson Not all countries have safe nuclear standards like the U.S. Plus they pose as extreme potential terrorist targets. Eventually if the world gets to a point where there are x amounts of power plants placed x amount of miles away from civilization...... eventually extreme numbers of people will be reduced to a smaller living area. We can't go on living like this forever. Just sayin....
I love the music. Anyone know the song? plus chenobyl was bad, i almost had the temptation to ask gorbachev about it when he was in my home town but i didn't
Wind power is absoloutely no substitute for nuclear fission. think outside the box. We need to be creating new methods of production, not investing in these "alternatives" which are shit like wind power. Solar power maybe if you could put a panel on every house on the planet but think of the resources it would take!
NUCLEAR FREE FUTURE! If you think you have no part in this then you are nothing but ignorant of your existence! Directly or indirectly EVERY HUMAN BEING is part of this and we can all be part of a solution if for once we think of others rather then just for ourselves!
I hope Greenpeace has a brilliant idea about how to substitute nuclear energy, because only protesting is not the solution. No one wants another Chernobyl but we humankind are growing exponentially, and if already providing energy is a challenge, how we will suffice the energy needs of the world without nuclear power? Nuclear plant ~ 1000 Megawatts in only 2 square miles (mi2) = 11,000 wind turbines over 375 mi2 = 31.25 mi2 of solar panels. Wind not always blows and sun not always shines...
@mauquiroz ever heard of geothermal electricity? its 10 times more efficient than nuclear power, and with the amount you are able to harness from ONE geothermal electrical plant would be enough to power the world. its been around for years...we really DONT need nuclear power, or coal power.
@thejewbeary Sure I've heard... I am a scientist working on remediation chemistry so energy generation is a topic I am QUITE familiar with as well as with the efforts and technologies available for mass energy production. Don't want to antagonize with you but your statement is inaccurate. California has the world's largest geothermal production with 46 geothermal plants and a total electrical capacity of 2,562 MW vs for example the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Plant that produces 8,210 MW ALONE
@mauquiroz im not trying to prove you wrong...this is just information i learned in a month and a half stay on the big island of Hawaii, where talked with a few people who worked in geo thermal techonologies. i understand at the moment we dont have a way of HARNESSING that much power, but that the electiricy built up in a volcano is way greater than something a nuclear fission or fusion (always forget which). AGAIN. im NOT studying this or any kind of expert, just want to learn more about it.
@mauquiroz But those last 2 can provide more than enough energy if the government would invest in it. The reason it's not being done is because oil companies would lose money. The oil companies are mighty, don't underestimate them.
It's stupid to risk many lives for short-term energy gains (fukushima, chernobyl, 3 miles, who's next?)
That, and the earth is overpopulated. There are simply too many people. We already have a huge food shortage.
@WolvesOfEurope I am not an advocate of nuclear energy, I am just a scientist with analytical will, a believer that actions set examples and rational proposals as long as they are substantiated should be listened. I don't think we can just ask for the government to do things. In the US the government offers stimulus for those who invest in "energy" such as solar panels and I just don't see many panels out there, and this is a country with economic power, countries in development have no chance..
@WolvesOfEurope Nuclear energy has caused less deaths and injuries than conventional energy sources such as coal have, it also has had a much lower environmental impact. Nuclear energy is the future, not solar or wind.
@mauquiroz I'm no fan of Greenpeace either, but your reasoning ins't entirely fair.
Just because we don't have good alternatives isn't a justification for doing something potentially devastating.
The probability of a disaster may be incredibly small, but it'll happen some time! (Murphy's Law) We've had 2 major meltdowns in 25 years. And as we build more and more plants, the rate of incidents will become higher. It will happen again! And who knows what the consequences will be this time...
Want to cut down on radiation? Then close a coal fired powered plant, they produce far more nuclear waste than an equivalent Nuclear power plant. Check out the New Scientist article on the subject. Greenpeace are disingenuous, I fell victim to their propaganda when I was younger, but not now. Furthermore you said ''as we build more..the rate will become higher'- that is a half truth- new reactor designs, like new car designs, are far safer than they were in the 1960s.
@mauquiroz You failed to mention that wind is always blowing in certain areas of the world and about water turbines in which powerful waves have more energy. Plus, nuclear energy is extremely dangerous for all people mostly children and is part in the cause of global disasters.
Nuclear energy is dangerous, but don't fall victim to the wind and water propaganda. Here's a question for you- what was the worst disaster in human history? you might answer Chernobyl? nope it really was the bursting of the Banqiao dam which killed 100,000 people pretty instantly. Your fav search engine will confirm this. Furthermore do you think geothermal energy is 'green',go find out how it works.its heat generated by Nuclear Fission FYI. again do a search.Enjoy
@marmaladekamikaze I have said nothing about Chernobyl being the 'worst' disaster in history and I said nothing about geothermal energy. If I did, maybe your comment might have the least bit of sense in it. These new ways of getting energy have a good future ahead of them and for us, right now they're in their infancy due to the fact that only non-profit organizations are supporting them.
Non profit? are you kidding yourself? Check out Solyndra(a solar power company) and it's half a billion loan from the Obama administration that, incidentally, just went down the toilet. What non-profit organizations are you speaking of?
@onsenfoudunom1 Green energy is fraud, get that into your retarded heads =) There are MILLIONS of things the earth could do in order to raise its heat and other things, you cannot prove global warming, you cannot prove that anything we have done actually damages the earth. There are TOO many factors.
@WolvesOfEurope Do you want me to list the things the earth could've done to do those things itself? You cannot prove it's because of us. Suck it down.
'Green' energy, you mean like the Banqiao dam burst which killed 100,000 people? Or do you mean Wind and Solar energy? both of which, as you know, fundamentally get their power from the Sun. So what you are really saying, is go invest in Nuclear energy. As the Sun is a giant Nuclear reactor. Ah I see thanks for the suggestion!
What GP don't know or just ignore is that chernobyl NPP was 30 years old at the time , from the 50's. Nuclear power today is incredibly safe as long as it's built recently and with new tech.
@kirtanloorii OMFG !!!! some ppl !!!! kirtanloonie r u braindead !! GREENPEACE bigbrothers protectors of the earths precious ecosystem which in full circle represents all of gods living creatures on earth !!!! Word CHERNOBYL means in Ukrainian language Wormwood ...
@1marcelfilms How would that accomplish anything. There is around 1-2 tonnes of radioactive dust Still in the planet with still radioactive fuel. By throwing a bomb into there all that would happen is that it would cause a Dust cloud like there was before in 1986 and then that would spread across the world like it did in 1986 causing many more problems
@ExtremeSciences so so SAD , so many brainless , blind, heartless, PPL making dumass comments on one of the worst man maid disasters on our great beautiful planet we all share !!!! WAKE the fukup you blind sheep !!! Green clean safe energy like Wind/ Solar/hydro/geothermal/etc
@1marcelfilms Hey marcelfilms do you have any CLUE / CherNObyl the biggest nuke disaster 1986 COST 200 billion to cover up and is now 2011 leaking toxic shit again and now russia will have to do the full cover AGAIN costing 200billon. so the fukup breakdown cherNObyl cost about 800million to build and NOW will cost a total of 400 billion to cover up and even worst over a million ppl died as a result !!! dont ever forget a nuclear meltdown last forever / Nuclear power suksballs!!!!!
Actually, nuclear power is quite safe, when done correctly, which is nearly all the time. Chernobyl was the result of deliberate safety measures being tampered with by the Russian scientists, as well as subpar construction.
Furthermore, the amount of radiation in the Chernobyl area is actually quite low. The cancer, supposedly resulting from the fallout is easily treatable, and furthermore, the Chernobyl area is now a wildlife refuge teeming with many species.
@0011haji your wrong wrong Wrong !!!!! you haji dont have a clue! read on all my old posts for this cherNObyl video and maybe you will learn some real hard knock Truth!!

And I can tell you have a high IQ with all YOUR grammar mistakes. YOU'RE definively a weird specimen.
And I never said I was pro-nuclear, I just said Chernobyl was not like it was a mistake due to the nuclear plant, but to the scientifics who decided to prove the limits without thinking of consequences.

Solar /Wind/ hydro/ geothermal/ etc
Are you kidding me? Hydroelectric power is even worse than nuclear! Dams are an environmental disaster. How can you be anti-nuclear yet be pro-hydroelectric?
@0011haji dam dude you still havent learned a dam thing !! over 1,000,000,000 million ppl have died as an end result of cherNObyl radiation fallout so far !! as far as the old nuclear plant design like cherNObyl did you Know that the majority of all nuke plants around the world are of this Same design !!! HELLO hajidontknowshit claiming nuke power today is incredibly safe ! wrong WRONG !! just ask Fukushima Japan !!! hey haji go do some serious real research first before Posting such bullshit !!

@Enriched235 your reply to mishiux LOL ! what a joke / and you forgot to mention the biggest factor that most of all existing nuclear plants are of this design! HELLO some ppl are dumass !nuclear engineer human error= possible nuclear fukup leading to full meltdown/2 natural disasters around a nuclear site = loss of grid power = backup generators that sometimes dont work or work for only so long= pump failure = no cooling water= hrs. of overheating = out of CONTROL NUCLEAR MELTDOWN lastforever
@teslacoil2012 You do realise that nuclear disasters are more of a threat for people than the environment? The wildlife around Chernobyl is back to its former glory. There just aren't any people living there.
@Cheesyeffect NUCLEAR PLANT FUKUPS are a major threat to every living thing on this beautiful planet !! nuclear MELTDOWNS LAST FOREVER !! yes agreed nuclear disasters are a bigger threat to all us humans that coincide in the environment we all share which is getting worse every min. of everyday !!!! to your comment THERE just arent any ppl living there !!! thats right over 25 yrs later and nobody will ever live there again . infact the russian gov. has to recover cherNOBYL again costing 200 bil
@Cheesyeffect the original russian ppl of the 75 cities and towns around cherNObyl that left there homes weeks after the biggest nuclear disaster in history have never returned !! even if there gov. paid them money to go back and live / the ppl said no fukn way / can you blame em !!! would you???? maybe fools like MOXenriched would !!
@Cheesyeffect LOOK UP !! cherNObyl 23years later !! on utube / maybe that might wake you up a bit to the harsh reality and how long these nuclear meltdowns impact all gods creatures ! the majority of all nuclear power plants across this great planet are of the same design which has a chance to fail to either human nuclear engineer error/brainfart/ or natural disaster that could cut off power to the most important cooling pumps= Nuclear Meltdown/ remember ppl last FOREVER !!! they never stop !!

Chernobyl was the worst nuclear power disaster in history!
It claimed the same amount of lives as from 12 hours of U.S. traffic accidents.
Speaking of traffic, I bet the folks at Greenpeace like to drive electric cars.
Nobody tell them that most of our electricity comes from coal and nuclear power.

OmegaRob3rt 2 months ago
pahhah.....shut nuclear powerplants off.....fuc* that!
nuclear powerplants are at the oment the best potion to gain energy....it wouldn't be cheap to turn them off....deconstruct them and so on.....you know? and if you turn them off, many people get no jobs and so....
and, the nuclear energy brings the most energy of all powerplants we have on this hell of a planet....
nuclear energy FTW!
btw.....chernobyl, WAS AN ACCIDENT!
Skjalgore 2 months ago
Facebook715 2 months ago

MissyJLawson 2 months ago
@MissyJLawson Not all countries have safe nuclear standards like the U.S. Plus they pose as extreme potential terrorist targets. Eventually if the world gets to a point where there are x amounts of power plants placed x amount of miles away from civilization...... eventually extreme numbers of people will be reduced to a smaller living area. We can't go on living like this forever. Just sayin....

Directly or indirectly EVERY HUMAN BEING is part of this and we can all be part of a solution if for once we think of others rather then just for ourselves!

katzliv 3 months ago
I hope Greenpeace has a brilliant idea about how to substitute nuclear energy, because only protesting is not the solution. No one wants another Chernobyl but we humankind are growing exponentially, and if already providing energy is a challenge, how we will suffice the energy needs of the world without nuclear power? Nuclear plant ~ 1000 Megawatts in only 2 square miles (mi2) = 11,000 wind turbines over 375 mi2 = 31.25 mi2 of solar panels. Wind not always blows and sun not always shines...
mauquiroz 3 months ago 50
@mauquiroz ever heard of geothermal electricity? its 10 times more efficient than nuclear power, and with the amount you are able to harness from ONE geothermal electrical plant would be enough to power the world. its been around for years...we really DONT need nuclear power, or coal power.
thejewbeary 2 months ago

mauquiroz 2 months ago
@thejewbeary Sure I've heard... I am a scientist working on remediation chemistry so energy generation is a topic I am QUITE familiar with as well as with the efforts and technologies available for mass energy production. Don't want to antagonize with you but your statement is inaccurate. California has the world's largest geothermal production with 46 geothermal plants and a total electrical capacity of 2,562 MW vs for example the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Plant that produces 8,210 MW ALONE
mauquiroz 2 months ago
@mauquiroz im not trying to prove you wrong...this is just information i learned in a month and a half stay on the big island of Hawaii, where talked with a few people who worked in geo thermal techonologies. i understand at the moment we dont have a way of HARNESSING that much power, but that the electiricy built up in a volcano is way greater than something a nuclear fission or fusion (always forget which). AGAIN. im NOT studying this or any kind of expert, just want to learn more about it.
thejewbeary 2 months ago
@mauquiroz But those last 2 can provide more than enough energy if the government would invest in it. The reason it's not being done is because oil companies would lose money. The oil companies are mighty, don't underestimate them.
It's stupid to risk many lives for short-term energy gains (fukushima, chernobyl, 3 miles, who's next?)
That, and the earth is overpopulated. There are simply too many people. We already have a huge food shortage.
WolvesOfEurope 2 months ago
@WolvesOfEurope I am not an advocate of nuclear energy, I am just a scientist with analytical will, a believer that actions set examples and rational proposals as long as they are substantiated should be listened. I don't think we can just ask for the government to do things. In the US the government offers stimulus for those who invest in "energy" such as solar panels and I just don't see many panels out there, and this is a country with economic power, countries in development have no chance..
mauquiroz 2 months ago
@WolvesOfEurope Nuclear energy has caused less deaths and injuries than conventional energy sources such as coal have, it also has had a much lower environmental impact. Nuclear energy is the future, not solar or wind.
Flightkid9 2 months ago
@mauquiroz I'm no fan of Greenpeace either, but your reasoning ins't entirely fair.
Just because we don't have good alternatives isn't a justification for doing something potentially devastating.
The probability of a disaster may be incredibly small, but it'll happen some time! (Murphy's Law) We've had 2 major meltdowns in 25 years. And as we build more and more plants, the rate of incidents will become higher. It will happen again! And who knows what the consequences will be this time...
Lolznator 1 month ago
@Lolznator
Furthermore you said ''as we build more..the rate will become higher'- that is a half truth- new reactor designs, like new car designs, are far safer than they were in the 1960s.
marmaladekamikaze 1 month ago
@mauquiroz You failed to mention that wind is always blowing in certain areas of the world and about water turbines in which powerful waves have more energy. Plus, nuclear energy is extremely dangerous for all people mostly children and is part in the cause of global disasters.
planetary109 1 month ago
@planetary109
Furthermore do you think geothermal energy is 'green',go find out how it works.its heat generated by Nuclear Fission FYI. again do a search.Enjoy
marmaladekamikaze 1 month ago
@marmaladekamikaze I have said nothing about Chernobyl being the 'worst' disaster in history and I said nothing about geothermal energy. If I did, maybe your comment might have the least bit of sense in it. These new ways of getting energy have a good future ahead of them and for us, right now they're in their infancy due to the fact that only non-profit organizations are supporting them.
planetary109 1 month ago
@planetary109
Non profit? are you kidding yourself? Check out Solyndra(a solar power company) and it's half a billion loan from the Obama administration that, incidentally, just went down the toilet. What non-profit organizations are you speaking of?

'Green' energy, you mean like the Banqiao dam burst which killed 100,000 people? Or do you mean Wind and Solar energy? both of which, as you know, fundamentally get their power from the Sun. So what you are really saying, is go invest in Nuclear energy. As the Sun is a giant Nuclear reactor. Ah I see thanks for the suggestion!

teslacoil2012 3 months ago
@teslacoil2012
