The bummer for us Bay Area folks is that Mammoth is so inaccessible during the winter months. I've tried to organize a trip via I5 to 58 to 395 or 80 or 50 to 395 to Mammoth but everyone just doesn't want to endure that drive when Tahoe is "just right there".
Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and do the drive myself so that I can finally say I skied at Mammoth.
The fall colors at June Lake Loop are one of the great secrets/unknowns of California.
I took a friend there who's originally from Colorado there in mid/late October and he said the masses of golden aspen looked just like what he remembered back in Colorado.
We prefer June Lake over Mammoth as the cabins are cheaper and the lakes of the June Lake loop have better/bigger fishing, plus we usually hike up to Gem Lake/Ansel Adams Wilderness. And there's the fishing at Convict Lake and the Owens River.
We still get to Mammoth to replenish our supplies at the Vons and Rite Aid and we MAY take a shot at the fishing at the lakes.
We're the few San Francisco Bay Area folks you'll find around June Lake/Mammoth/Owens Valley during summertime.
Ah yes U.S.395 from Bridgeport. That's our route to our usually annual summer stay in a cottage in June Lake.
Coming over from Sonora Pass, we'll stop and fish the Middle Fork Stanislaus on our way to the Pass. Then we stop at the market in Bridgeport for those big sandwiches. As it's late we stop at the Virginia Creek Settlement and stay overnite at one of the tent cabins and fish Virginia Creek in the morning. Then in the morning it's on to June Lake with a stop in Lee Vining.
Awesome timelapse tour! Oh how I wish Google would take notice and fund a HUGE sped-up video of a weather ballon circling the globe, and taking a high-res 360 degree photo every 1/8th second. That would be the ultimate HDTV blu-ray experience, haha. Alas, my home theator will never see such brilliance. :(
I love mammoth!!! and i love the drive!!! however i think i prefer the drive through the owens valley below mammoth more than through bridgeport, in the evenings when the sun sets it looks like the mountains are glowing.
I'm French but never visited France. Perhaps some day you might like to post a timelapse video such as this, of the French countryside??? And slow down the vid a second for the pretty landscapes. :D
You can already find many video of the french countryside (around Metz (north east of France) on my account. But coming soon, timelapse video of my last roadtrip : Metz-Dijon-Lyon-Grenoble-Annecy-Genève (country, forest, moutain) with beautiful landscape ;)
It's starting to become an annual ritual for me to drive up 395 to see the aspen foliage in october. US 395 is still a hidden gem even among Californians. Thanks for the vid.
P.S. It amazes me how many people who make the SoCal to Tahoe trip take the 5 instead of the 395. It is just as fast if not faster, significantly less crowded, and infinitely more beautiful.
Very Nice. That is one of my favorite drives of all-time. The drive north of Bridgeport, which is not shown on this video, is even better in my opinion. I've driven this road many times on my yearly ski trip from SoCal to Lake Tahoe.
I was pulling a trailer. California has a split speed limit - 55 for trucks and any vehicle with a trailer, and 65 for everybody else. It really sucks.
I don't know the name of the artist or track, but it's from the video game "Wipeout". Do a Wiki search on "Wipeout video game" and it will give you a list of the possibilities.
I made a short movie (less than 10 sec), converted to a .gif file using media-convert(.)com (also resized it to 100x75 and set the frame rate to 7 fps), and uploaded it as my personal profile picture.
I need that CD...if I play it while I drive, will I go that fast??

Wow, a sign for 3.79 a gallon for gas at the very end of the video. Well, we will probably all be paying that this summer or next.
