  • And Just 3 weeks after this performance Demri Parrott would die and it would kill off whatever was left off Layne... So sad, RIP both them x

  • is it me or does that organ sound so out of place in the 2nd verse...but yet again it sounds kinda cool

  • they clearly changed songs simply to fuck with the house band

  • and he die young...fuck

  • Comment removed

  • seriously tho Layne looks so thin and frail here it is sad.. He still killed it tho on both songs but we die young especially.... I love Layne he is the man

  • Layne is like fuck you letterman... I need my shot

  • I remember watching this on TV the first airing when I was 15 , I really wasnt into Aic yet at the time , but it came on and I started slowly getting up and moving closer to the tv until i was sitting on the floor 2 feet away in total awe. At that point in my life I realized what Rock music was meant to sound like. Then I started playing guitar and been playing ever since. That was 16 years ago.

  • Who is the guy doing the solo at 2.19?

  • @penalozaur Letterman's house band. His musicians almost always play along with guest acts.

  • wat is he using to make his voice sound all pitchy? just curious

  • I have watched this video so many times I can't count...I just noticed that Layne doesn't have his "gloves" on!

  • @HellFrozeOverAndOver Yes he didn't and I love to see that. Actually I think he did this on purpose.....Yeah

  • YEAH! THIS IS MUSIC.

  • fuckin love this shit

  • This is great.Sitting here watching this remembering back then this and that. Our parents didn't get that chance 20 years later!

  • WOW THEY MIXED THE TWO SONG HOLY WOW EPIC

  • So good.

  • So fucking good

  • I guess they do die young RIP mike and layne

  • One of the best ever!!

  • To me it definitely looks like Letterman drug Layne back and forced him to give a proper handshake, not the other way around.

  • @floydsteaks i agree he does seem to be walking away i think he is high in that moment

  • @floydsteaks i second that. letterman goes for the handshake but isn't even looking at layne as he's talking to the camera. then he drags layne back as layne's walking off.

  • I love how Layne made Letterman actually look at him during the handshake!

  • playin it again and again & ...

  • I shit when they transitioned into WDY..... lAYNE WENT OFF...

  • @fpsZach1 I pooped as well.

  • Letterman ROCKS.

He always had great bands on his show, Alice In Chains, Megadeth, Sex Pistols, Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, Black Sabbath and others.

  • This is the best quality upload of this performance on here.

    THUMBS UP.

    \m/

  • I love old AIC but the new is solid too so some is better than zero...I grew up listening to them.,

  • looks like Layne is pretty high at that handshake.. or he just didnt want to let go

  • @PerlJanst yeah he's high as shiiiit!!!

  • david letterman lucky fucker got to shake laynes hand !!

  • what kind of hat is layne wearing?

  • @jimywho1 looks like he's wearing a buff

  • the gay letterman band is covering the main riff in Again. Jerry is playin from the A string and up not the low E string until We Die YOung, then he takes over the lead....

  • Layne nailed that key change like it was nothing.

  • Oh shit!! The best of the best Layne Staley and the Chains!

    Rock Roll at its grooviestt!!

  • how can they play those two back to back if 'we die young is in drop db sharp?

  • @johnny891000 because jerry cantrell is playing it.

  • @johnny891000 i always thought all their songs were tuned down

  • @penal420 Alice tunes are mostly done in half step down tunning like 'again' but there are some that are in drop d# like 'we die young'

  • Love the hat

  • Please tell me someone knows the sunglasses he's wearing!

  • @Archiian Layne wore Raybans

  • @socalartgal I know that but I was wondering of the specific ones he has here, but I think I found them anyway

  • 2:17 Who?

  • @facetoface0630 some stiff who is probably on the david letterman band. certainly wouldnt be the first time one of daves dorky band members performed with the music guests.

  • To this day the guitar player in the show's band cannot believe his fucking luck!

  • もうヘロインでヤバかったあたりのレインだな。

    いいヴォーカリストだったなあ。

  • Unmistakeable voice. I love and miss it. RIP.

  • YO!

  • fucking great

  • an awesome moment in TV history!

  • 3:41 Epic handshake by Layne.

  • @Niamorg1007 I agree. That was a great fucking handshake

  • Growing up in the late 80's and early 90's while watching and listening to the birth of Grunge music that changed the music industry forever was just awesome! Alice in chains, Soundgarden, PearlJam,NIrvana, MotherLoveBone, and a few others im probably skippin over,(lots of drugs do that lol) wer all great live! Remember that history repeats itself, so lets see what trend comes next in "rock" "alternative"music.........2011 and still waiting.......

  • @zleo1074z couldnt agree more. think that the next big trend wont come under our circumstances. Its going to come when kids realize "hey man what the radio, tv and internet is feeding me is shit, im gonna start my own band". It almost happened with garage rock revival (Stripes, Hives, etc.) but didnt because they didnt have anything meaningful to say, which grunge had in a way.

  • : BY GOD : BY D3ATH :

  • christ the man could barely stand up for this let alone shake the clowns hand after

  • @JimB667 layne dont need to be able to stand up to belt out the vocals, seen him perform in crutches and wheelchairs and he still nailed every song.

  • @penal420 amen to that man

  • The whole band was burnin on this set!

  • me and this friends at "Church of the Reformed Druids" were going to form a band, anyways, he was doing security for the van Halen FUCK tour 1 night, and AIC were the opening act and still hadn't broken big...

so they were chatting and he offered to show them around the town(edmo -SNFU and SKINNY PUPPY's home),

they went out all night had a great time and were super nice super cool people...

I heard later that Layne had all the sex torture dungeons in North Am mapped out hahahaha

  • I account for 100 of the views on this video. Thanks so much for sharing this!

  • Layne Staley is not only an inspiration to all young rock and roll singers all over the world, but also to everyone who has found a conflicting interest that deters from their God-Given talent(s). God Bless Layne Staley. May he Rest in Peace!

  • The Letterman Show guitarist ruins this whole video. You can hear his guitar waaay over Jerry's most of the time.

  • lovin the guy in the tux kickin out the fuckin jams!

  • This is the real thing - Layne, I think, did fulfill his role here and left a powerful legacy and influence...this is an example of that rare total artist who's voice is raw power and emotion and control (when he was probably out of control), but you know he was an intellectual with a sense of humour, sensitive to what was happening around him and tough as f'n nails for sure. now rest - you made a difference - and we'll keep listenin brother.

  • 7 people are nirvana fag lovers go play russian roulette=D hahaha

  • @Thomlistentoslayer Watchu got against Nirvana?

  • @Thomlistentoslayer nirvana kicks ass and russian roulette is a kiss song and kiss also kicks total ass

  • @thedirector52 jewsssssssss

  • @Thomlistentoslayer im also a jewish man with a band but lets get along with this alice in chains are amazing and duvall ruined it

  • @thedirector52 i have a friend who saw them and said they were still badass

  • @bojanks15 really i dont like duvall singing man in the box thats it but ill admit his new shit is pretty bangin

  • man layne idk how he made it to 2002 but just very sad

  • letterman grabbed his hand to pull and pose together infront of camera but layne politely didnt want

  • you can tell layne staley was fucked up and not well at the end where he grabbed letterman's hand and didnt let go

  • @zshot2188 woman like to be dominated

  • layne is a legend rip

  • Oh, just had to say,"I'd advise U 2 shut UP if U R going 2 criticize this band!" Obviously U don't qualify as a musician yourself, so UR 1 of the mindless millions paying 4 total crap!Dingleberry!!!!

  • haha Layne....Letterman you douchbag...I wanna get the fuck outa here.

  • it's incredible how layne seems to be looking at one same direction the whole video

  • heh i thought we were watching man in the box here.

btw the transition here between songs is flawless!

  • shit singer? lol. sustaining that a# after the solo with that kind of chesty-mix voice is almost impossible ! and he wasnt even a tenor. my voice hurts just thinking about him singing this live all the time. hats down.

  • A&C was badass back in the day I remember seeing them on the Clash of the Titans tour when they opened for slayer, megadeth and anthrax and Box was their only single at the time. I remember we all walked away impressed just like seeing Motley Crue and Metallica with Ozzy and knowing both were going to be awesome not really hearing them before the show.

  • why didnt jerry play his own solos? that guy sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!! was that some tv guitarist wanting to get his rocks off?

  • @plankboi its a good question, maybe jerry needed to change effects and shit for the next song? i dont really know though it doesnt make sense to me either

  • @plankboi

Any time a music act performs on the Letterman show Letterman's shitty-ass band unfortunately has to play with the music act.

  • in layne we trust

  • One of Marilyn Manson's influences has got to be Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley's vocaling styles. If you listen to Marlyn Manson's songs closely, you can kind of tell that his vocal range is equivalent to Jerry's and Layne's.

  • I wonder if the Letterman studio audience knew what just hit them ?

  • onstage charisma doesn't get any better than this. so badass it almost gives me chills. the transition between songs..... goddamn.

  • His book wasn't titled "A look into the heart and soul of an incredible musician" for no reason. Despite his book receiving so many bad feedbacks, I do believe the author was trying to show some sort of respect to Staley, though his own privacy he craved more than he craved Heroin.

  • @jackman94 - I agree. If a band wants to play on Letterman, that little twit Paul Schaeffer insists his band play some role in the performance. Crock of shit.

On another note, this video would make the ultimate anti-drug commercial when contrasted with the youtube video 'Alice in Chains - Sunshine (Seattle, WA 1990)'. Every live AIC video in 1996 has Layne just standing, looking sickly, like the mic stand is holding him up. Sad. RIP Layne Staley, AIC is not the same without you.

  • i hate that clean strat played by the on set musician really ruins the awesome songs...

  • Fuckin Awesome....

  • FUCKING HEROINE!

  • @mxerte WALKING HEROIN!!!

  • That's how it's done live man.

    Freaking tight band right there.

Layne had an unmistakable voice and they played from within.

Freaking awesome performance and it's just a late night TV gig. I would loved to have seen them do a real gig.

  • by far the best letterman performance

well this and blind melons letterman performances

    great stuff

  • Just love it when they go from again to we die young!!

  • Fucking awesome!!!

  • Comment removed

  • down Down DOWN YOU'RE ROLLIN !! ! !! I never heard his voice sound so good live before,,,,,, His passing saddened + pissed me off way more than Hoon's, Hutchen's, and Cobains.......They all had talent,,,,,, But Layne was blessed with the coolest Orginal Voice...... .. R.I.P. Layne

  • layne always had the best hats.

  • ......and thats why i hate todays music.. thank you grunge for elevating my expectations...

  • haha Lane is lost, doesn't know whats going on at the end

  • @pappas99 yeah he does he just didnt want to hold dave's hand that long. dave was going for that 3 second hand shake

  • @pappas99 @BryanSMeyer I'm pretty sure Layne was just kind of pissed at how Paul Shaffer and co. tried to play along with them as if to undermine the simplicity of the chord progression. Hence, why they went into "We Die Young," with the first line being "watch where you spit!"

  • What's up with the extra musicians at 2:16 ? Are they from Letterman's band?

  • @gullywoots yes they are... and the guitar give some cover do jerry at harmonics at that part ;)

  • Layne shakes Letterman's hand like, "big fucking deal, where's my dopesack?" lol.

  • I wanna kill 7 people RIGHT NOW

  • Good Lord!

  • Damn I'd love to see another great band rock out on Letterman today.

  • Layne seems to struggle with Again, but he showed that he still had it with We Die Young.

  • @paulph12002 i seen him shake his head like he werent empressed with himself even on die young. he prob just having a bad day with his voice or motivation.

  • Im glad Paul Shaffer left theses guys. AIC were only holding him back. And WTF is up with the Guitar cruch? Rip Layne.

  • 3:04 is awesome

  • @menuseja - Amazing.....

  • 2:27 is one of the best moments of music history

  • lmao i love letterman. He may be a dork but atleast he shows respect to one of the greatest bands of all time. Unlike Leno who is a stuck up clueless cheeseball. Look up a perfect circle 3 leos live on leno and see what im talking about

  • fuck todays music! its pumped out by the machine like rca and sony what they call music!

  • Thanks! You made my day bro!

  • most of my friends hate this band but I dont agree with those people

  • @wisesatyr72 nice story

  • @wisesatyr72 you need new friends. just sayin'

  • @TheeFinchLynch Friends are useless, just saying..but I get you ..

  • @wisesatyr72 wtf...no ofense but most of your friends must be in love with 2000`s music

  • LOL. Its awesome that when "We Die Young" comes on, whoever was watching this and recording it, turned the volume up. Listen to it LOUD man !

  • @sgtroq Actually i think that son of a bitch turns it down...

  • God, he looks so sick here. Close to death.

I know it seems odd but I just want to hug him and never let him go. He seems so isolated here, just him and his demons.

  • I love Mike's curly hair.

  • It really saddens me to hear Layne sing "We Die Young", given how his life ended. :(

  • DAVID FOREVERRR!! :D

  • Good shit guys ! Wish he was still with us.

    We All Die Young.

  • Layne growls like a robot... & it is fucking awesome.

  • How is scott weiland still alive and layne is not? i think scott did more heroin then he. If only layne was still alive too, it would be awesome. layne staley + stone temple pilots show.

  • He looks so bad , i think he was sick.

  • his voice is so sick...

  • fuck cant get over how sick the transition is between songs, if it didnt have we die young in the title i would have shat myself when it switched...

  • I saw this back then. I stayed up just to watch it. I feel in love with Layne more but sadly he would pass onto a better world than this years later. RIP Layne

  • at the end Dave would,t let go of his hand, xD lol

  • AIC without Layne,it's not the same.No one can replicate Layne vocally and especially personality. Just like Kurt Cobain, minus him ,success is not a guarantee.

  • Layne was in his peak, the band sounded so tight... AIC a legend & they still r ... that heavy doom, an infamous GRUNGE band then & for many years to follow!

AIC deeply influenced me in more ways then simple words culd relay... Layne will always b w/ AIC in spirit, he will live on as well as AIC's music forever, & Layne wuld want it that way!

  • Layne was the only singer who's amazing talent was able to rock the shit out of our heads, just by standing there singing (probably at 10% of his best) ... depressed and fucked up from the inside ... in a lot of pain ... barely moving ... this is real fukin music!

  • jerry's dressed the way metallica was dressing in those days

  • its sad see Layne here, so unhealted ....

we miss you Layne and fuck the abuse of drugs

  • Layne laid-it-down like an immaculate King of Battle Cries~*.

  • This makes the hair on my arms stand up dude.

  • I remember watching this when it aired,.. fucking KILLSHOT !!

  • Just friggin awesome .

  • Stop bitching about the New Alice In Chains already. One comment I hear "Layne would not like Alice in Chains being around without him", and then another comment I read" Layne would be proud"!

Nobody knows what Layne would think or say about them continuing... BUT HIMSELF!! Quit acting like he was your fucking neighbor or something even though we all wish he was (Including me). Come on I know his lyrics and awesome singing make you feel like you actually knew him, but we all don't. RIP Layne

  • I thought paul shafer left AIC?

  • AIC r the shit and the new guy is ok

  • very true Ramonesskater4life

  • Today's generation of musicians might as well start doing drugs. They'll probably improve because they are that fucking terrible.

  • @RamonesSkater4life

    LOL AGREED

  • @mrtall1994 and years later... they die... but the difference is they deserve it for ruining the music industry!

  • @RamonesSkater4life.

Man there are good musicans today, please. ...

  • @WillyTheHurricane give 5 examples of decent modern musicians, and maybe I'll forgive you

  • @RamonesSkater4life You should probably start sucking on trucks. Just go stand in the road with your mouth open and wait for a truck to suck. Don't worry; it is not bad for your health.

  • @RamonesSkater4life Layne learnt to sing like that when he didn't use drugs (or just a few), and he died because of overuse. Using drugs is not the way to have good music nor to have good artists leaving.

  • @RamonesSkater4life Your an Idiot !

  • @RamonesSkater4life Your an Idiot !

  • @RamonesSkater4life that or learn how to play there own instruments

  • Guy totally raped the fucking bass, riped it out, fuck yeah.

  • I loved the extended "fuck you" handshake with Letterman.

  • Wow, blown away! If you'll excuse me I'm gonna go punch some random person in the face now.

  • I want THIS VERSION to be downloadable for Rock Band 3, seriously, I'd play this song all day.
