Actually this IS incorrect. With Japanese words (even combination words like this) you typically pronounce every sylable.

"poké" is poh-ké not "poké" (pocket would be something like "poh-ke-tu" rather than the western "Pok-et"

I think the accent mark is there so people don't ignore the 'e', as we can observe in 'to poke'. Because it's a word of Japanese origin, the 'e' sound of 'ケ' (ke) must be there, and should be pronounced like the 'e' in 'wet'.
