  • People were getting crushed to see them in 82

  • best live performance ever

  • The Who : Best rock band ever.

  • This is Kick Ass !!!

  • man awesome!

    this was in my hometown

    my mum was there

wish i was there too but it was like 11 years before i was born^^

  • Love this song miss keith on the drums not the same.

  • By this time in British punk rock you had to look like a rent boy or thug and the who are still strutting themselves to the heart of industrial Germany. A steel coal megalpolis where 5 years before the ex SS was probably running the police still and german war death steam 2-10-0s were moving the coal through the Ruhr. They sound better with reliable back beat of Kenny Jones. Keith had been too soft to back 3 borderline psychopaths from Acton.

  • If martians visited earth and asked what Rock Music is all about-just show them this performance.

  • powerful stuff...Even without Moon the power of those songs is awesome. Today, we get protools, drum machines and the end product is music with little heart or emotion. The Who were the best band in the world because they could bring it live.

  • That's because now a days music is about making money talent and longevity of the songs aren't even considered singers like "lil wayne" the only part of their so called songs when they're even saying anything is the talking the melody's are done by a computer. But above all this song is what 35-40 years old and its still playing today lets see any billboard top 40 hit today last almost half a decade and this is still gonna keep playing millenniums from now

  • Well could it be that you got confused by East and West-Germany ?

There was a technological gap between the East and the West in general.

    This concert was West-Germany

  • this is what i call good classic rock music and boy, was the lighting and technology just awesome, i didn't even know germany was this advanced in technology back in the 80's... i also loved how pete slid his fingers across the neck of his guitar to create that awesome sound in the beginning!!!!!!

  • Yup right you are. You wouldn't find anything comparable in the states even today

  • haha no, we have kickass concerts in the states, america is like the forefather of technology, maybe only next to japan haha what ru talking about? we had concerts like these in the states back in the 80's what i wanted to say was that i always thought that germany was a little backward technologically and so watching a concert like this in germany back in the 80's changed my viewpoint a little bit but the us was always very very technologically advanced

  • and we had concerts just like these in the 80's

  • CSI Helsinki

  • yea cbs should def do that lol

  • yeah wow this is agreat live version, its as fast as the studio and most live ones are a tad slower

  • none of the live ones are slower. they play with a tape so theres no way for them to be slower.

  • Having had the privilege of seeing them live before, as good as they were, this is by far the best version of Who Are You I've heard, save perhaps the original studio cut...

  • Roger "runs" in this song as a "look back" at the song "Bargain" which dealt with a similiar theme(searching for God) In Bargain a line reads "...to find you I'm going to run and never stop..."--Who are you? Get it? Screw me.

  • whoa! i never got that. my band did a promo video for who are you, and as the singer i ran to imitate roger. i never knew thats why he did it. thanks for that

  • That's my theory. I'm a Who expert...I spend lot's of time thinking about the WHO. Who is your band? Is the video on youtube?

  • we dont have a name just yet. but im gonna post the promo once the audio is finished being dubbed into the tape.

  • My favorite song- and this is the ONLY live version I have ever heard OR seen that is good. Does anyone agree? I twas a hard song to do live I think -very comlicated rythyms...no? Screw me.

  • i agree man best version ive heard by far

  • yeah man...the best.

  • @bigsky929

Have you guys ever heard the version performed live during the "rock honors the who" on VH1. That's got to be my favorite version, although Daltrey's voice has changed quite a bit, Townsend absolutely lights up the stage, and Zak Starkey couldn't have played it better! Check it out!

  • Best Who Are You live- on film anyway.

  • Forget that stones and Beatles Shit as it comes to the term "Rock". This was the real thing (history will tell)- copied millions of times and still unbeaten.

  • That was the fuckin shit! Awesomeness! Saw The Who last year, but that was a festival. I'm gonna see 'em again this year in a proper gig. Cant wait. They still blow the balls off any of the young bands!

  • Yeah I saw them at Wembley Stadium in 1982 and indeed, they were great!

  • i talk alot about the who. i wasnt a fan at all in 82. they were awsome at shea stadium, but even before that they were losing their edge. 1981 was their last good year till 89. that was an amazing tour. the only reason i saw em in shea is cause my guitar teacher got me free tickets on the floor cause his dad worked their. they were really loud though.

  • Wow, someone thinks The Who was better in 1989 than in 1982? That's a rare opinion. I liked some of the energy I saw from the '89 videos, but I'd take the 1982 tour (and the criticized "Who's Last" LP) over the 1989 tour, simply because Pete was still the only guitarist (and electric, at that) in the band in 1982, and in 2000.

  • i'll agree on that one. i dont understand why nobody liked the "WhoMania" band. they werent the who but they were still better than 82. i do think "Whos Last" was overcriticized, but the who in 89 was better becuase they cared. in their 1981 tour, they were bored. if they had taken a break and wrote some more songs took the best out of them, 7 or 8, then took that on tour, they would prolly have a hit by 85. i agree that 82 tour was original but 89 took more balls out of them.

  • There's absolutely nothing bored about this

and many other 1981 shows they did...

They have never have been as good post 1982 as they were during 1979-1982

  • well i strongly dissagree. i think that their best years no matter what are 1974-1976. but on that note, i think you and i should just agree that their a great band and they had their ups and downs. how about that?

  • I agree, as this show at Essen proves, they still rocked better than the "big band" version of 89.

  • Sounds great. Still probably one of the best bands in the world at this time. I saw them live in Tempe in October 1982 and the sound / energy was similar to this version.

  • yeah, an incredible band, I just wish I were around to see them in their prime, oh well, I saw them recently, and Pete and Rog are still incredible.

  • Not ailing at all.. fantastic durgin this period.. better than anytime after that...

  • sounds greaaaaaaaaat! From a band who was ailing you dont see that here

  • They sound a lot better and more energized than when I saw them in 1982.
