In the past couple of days I've listened to the movie soundtrack, and the concert performance with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra (with George Hearn and Patti LuPone as Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett, respectively). I must say that the movie performances lack the sort of liveliness, the passion, as the live performances. The acting, as far as these recordings go, is lacking greatly. There's my opinion.

I can't wait for all the thumbs down I'll get. It seems to be the norm here.

As I said, it's as far as these recordings go. These were, after all, recorded in a studio with minimal acting as far as getting "into the character". In the movie, I'm sure the performances are better than the soundtrack. I have not seen the movie yet, that is why I did not make any criticisms on their movie performances. Just the recording for the sound track.

I do agree with you, especially regarding the song Green Finch and Linnet Bird. However, I think that subdues, careless sort of singing/acting is what the director was going for, and I do think it helps make the movie a successful black comedy.

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp wanted it to be gloomy and low toned so unlike the plays and live proformances it was supposed to be circled around Mr. Todd's gloom and depression and anger as well. Though your opinion is very well stated I give you a thumbs up for bitting the bullet and just being head on. =)
