A #1 hit for Bobby Lewis on the Rhythm & Blues charts and the Top 40 charts. It was also the #1 song of 1961. It was also the 82nd #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. Definitely his signature song.
For some reason whenever my mother was tired, she thought of the song Mr Sandman one time, but there was an incident when I couldn't sleep one night when I was 13 since someone was prank calling the house at 1 am in the morning. Whenever i think of that incident, I think of this song since it's like the prank caller pretty much played it.
2:37 YouTube audio: Bobby Lewis singing Tossin' and Turnin' [1961].
February 17, 1933: birth of Bobby Lewis, American singer. In July 1961, his recording of "Tossin' and Turnin'" went to No.1 on the Billboard chart. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
I was 9 y/o when this song first came out & I was struck instantly(even at that age)by the power & soul of Bobby Lewis' voice. So much so, the other night me,my brother & sister were visiting my mom & we just happened to throw out this song to have fun with...everybody remembered the lyrics & that great swing & bounce this classic song left stamped in our veins (even when he jumped the gun after the sax solo with..jumped outta..jumped outta bed). His "One Track Mind" classic is right there too!
i think i'm the only person who ever temp to do this record..i'm a fan of bobby..when my studio ask me if i like to do it..i jump at the chance..i got some air play back here in philly...my stage name is guy morris...for the life of me i can't find it any where..my hot pants party is on here..anyway i have a great time with tossin and turnin..did a lot of teen hops....
This song rocked so hard...rocks so hard...that it has that appeal of a song that is/was ahead of its time...like so many rare hits. I would love to rerelease this jam...slow it down a bit...Luther Vandross style,...but leave the 'Hip' in it..oh yeah. This song inspires!
I was 13 when Bobby Lewis made this song. This was the song in 1961. I still like it as much now as I did then. This is real music. Thank you for posting this song.

I was a little kid of 6 years when this song came out. My father LOVED it, and would suddenly burst into this song at the dinner table. It was great!

This was the original version that never made the marketplace. The intro was eliminated. This is my all-time #1 song.
