@TootAzraq pffffffffffffffffffft as if, minis are the most overrated synth in history. great if your a virtuoso keyboard player, as a keyboard they are pretty good. but as a synthesizer the ms wins all, bar maybe the 2600. and i own the first two, and had in my possession a 2600 for a couple of years. x
ugh, right, just can't let it go, you may sample a guitar, and play it back on a midi guitar controller, run it through a modelling amp but it will not in a million years be mistaken for a real guitar. Polyester just isn't silk, fibreboard isn't wood, and a barking toy is not a real pet. I'm sure you can generate some fat sounds on your digital equipment, but the full range of the analog circuits, the mighty scream of the ms-20 can't be emulated.
@dynetrax i've done a similar loop to this in iMS-20, even though i feel the MS-20 is unmatched by any software. That being said, MS-20s are getting rarer and more expensive, so you might as well buy the ipad app until you have the cash to buy a ms-20.
@acewing Not entirely, the MS-10 lacks some patches that you need. Though you can crank out a good spash-ambient-loop out of it!
I recently saw one of these for sale on ebay going for pretty cheap. The only problem was that one of the keys was broken and sprung. Can this be repaired with damaging anything?
What are MS-20's like with tuning? I have a Roland Jupiter 8 and it has some pretty annoying tuning problems haha! It'll change a few cents by itself when you're least expecting it, sometimes only on half the keyboard too!
@sonicjay007 and 77grim77 with respect its not a semi-modular, but rather a patchable synth. You can't fundamentally change the signal path. Modular synths are a whole other ball game, folks :-)
@77Grim77: It's a semi-modular synth. You can connect several sources, like oscillator outputs, with several destinations freely (with other oscillators or filter frequency, for example) for more complex sound modulations.
The "cable connections" of non-modular synths are fixed. With modular synths you can build your own synth, if you want. Simply put every style of wiring makes a new synthesizer. ;)
brilliant patch, as an advanced user do you know if there is there any 'workaround' for having the filters track the osc. cv? i know there is a kbd cv out but it only works for the range of the built in keyboard, if you use the octave switches it doesnt do anything. is there no other way to acheive the effect of being able to 'play' the self oscillating filter across the keyboard somewhat accurately? if one of the osc were modded to provide an audio and cv out you could do it then, correct?

Or visit dustybin org uk for mountains of Commodore 64 music software and other goodies I have collected.
@MrDigitalDeath HI. if you can't afford, or get hold of the real thing, like me, who can nly borrow one of my friends 3!!!!!, Buy "korg legacy collection". it doesnt sound quite as "broken" but you can still make some nice sounds!, there you get a miniaturized version of this synth, as a usb midi controller, and a vst and standalone program for your mac or pc. There you can go through presets or save your own settings.
Not trying to slag off your achievement (very cool show) but I have to point out that using a delay or a spring reverb on the MS20 (or MS10 or any analog synth) makes a huge difference from the original sound source.
A Korg MS10/MS20 though a analog reverb/delay and compressor is probably the coolest way to create music. Love those machines.
The MS-20 might very well be the coolest mono-synth ever built, I cannot think of one that looks or sounds more exiting than this.. These clips however deserve a high quality option!
MS-20 is simply the best synth for creating experimental sounds ever!
I bought mine in 1978 and I still own it.
It was my first synth and I will never part with it. Love the space loop. Sounds a bit like a sequence, without actually using a sequencer. Long live modular synths!
You can trigger external sound sources with a Pitch CV converter, no external input (sounds awesome when mistracking the filter) Aphex Twin uses this a lot.
The Legacy collection is pretty good. Despite being a piece of software, it can produce some impressive semi-modular sounds, just like the MS-20. It's good, though it can't be compared to the real thing;)
MS10 and MS20 are semi modular synths. The base modules on the left are basically prepatched but on the right side you can patch the modules as you will do it on a big system.
had a ms20,sold it. the only synth i regret selling. they are getting hella expensive. i would fuck with this thing for hours like this. the hp/lp filter sounds like no other. you just can't recreate this kind of shit on a computer
@co211 Why can't you create this on a computer? We're hearing it now via digital and it sounds analogue. Why could it not be created from scratch and still sound analogue?
@marcel911 analog synths sound so big nd full compared to softsynths, i used to have quite a collection of softsynths and am in the process of going back to analog after many years use. the thing about analog is that it is REAL softsynths are not real they are made/programmed to sound like a real synth but they really do not sound anywhere near as good. get yourself a waldorf pulse and then you will understand.
@marcel911 You have a point. But no one has done it right so far. It's one thing to recreate the sound path. That's actually easy. What's hard is recreating all the electronic components so you recreate the subtle non-linearity in the signal that is typical to analog synths.
@marcel911 Because the analogue realm has access to physics to describe its sounds, digital has ones and zeroes. Modern softsynths are pretty damn good but as far as I've understood it analogue synths very much like guitars and string-instruments can create complexity thats far beyond what we could program. Then again, who except us checking out synths on youtube really do care about the difference?
@Frozensmokeprod Don't bother telling an analog hipster that you can get close to the sound with software cuz they'll just smug out on you and preech to you how much better standing in front of a vintage synthesizer goes so well with his black frame glasses.
@dynetrax You don't have to be a genius to figure out that recreating the sound and feel of analogue equipment is all but impossible on digital hardware. Sure you'll get close enough but if you ever owned a real analogue synth you will know the difference. Produce a record and the listener may never hear the difference, stand in front of an MS-20... and tweak that current - it's like twisting a garden hose and spraying the sound all up in the air - how do you computerize that?
Sample & Hold takes an input signal, samples it, and holds it for a set period of time. When noise is set as the input for example, it randomizes the control signal. In the above setup, the sample & hold is set to control the envelope triggers as well as the pitch modulations in certain parts of the video.
hmm...im not sure why so much patching was really necessary, as surely the filter could have been set to auto sweep, complete with a s&H to stagger the sweep
