@alston2reel, you know the funny thing? I tell everyone who isn't a native or at least Japanese speaker who whines about the "sub being better" to STFU, but quite recently, I looked on one video and heard someone who actually does speak Japanese say they prefer the dub. So now I can officially reference that anytime I hear someone say "Japanese is better, it means more" when I counter with "You don't even understand the language, not even the Japanese don't think their language is all-mighty".
Its ashame English speakers idolize Japanese dialect just because of anime, especially if the only reason you like it is because you've studied anime and have no real skill at speaking or understanding it. Just like a prostitute flocks to whoever offers them money.
@Momentum139 You found one instance and are using that as your proof? What a pitiful scientist you'd make. In any case evidently you weren't taught of this magical thing called an "Opinion". When there is a choice between two things there will always be people on both sides and honestly have you heard how corny English dubs are? They ruin the appeal of the anime. <- My OPINION by the way. I personally LOVE the Japanese accent/language despite my short comings in it's understanding.
By merely having an opinion and claiming you own a right to it, you are using a self-defense to make the other person worse. However, by censoring criticism of your opinion, are you not therefore attacking someone else's opinion that your opinion is bad/inferior? Don't get me wrong, we can keep debating, but I have more respect for someone who asserts their knowledge then simply hides inside of an opinion.
@Momentum139 I guess all that's left is to explain why I think subs are better.
1: Unlike when an anime is dubbed, subs show the complete, unedited scene and unedited story. Dubs will often omit scenes because they believe them too *graphic* to be show in western television. They also muddle the translation so much in an effort to try and get the words to match the mouths.
2: There is more emotion portrayed in the voices of Japanese voice actors. They get into the character roles far bet-
@Momentum139 -ter than their English counterparts and to be honest is sounds like they're actually enjoying doing it rather than just being in it for the money.
3: Even if it's only a few words here and there with subs, people are able to get even a tiny insight into another language. From this small insight people may consider learning the language and taking interest in other cultures.
I don't just was anime subbed. I watch a wide range of other things ranging from foreign documentaries-
@Momentum139 -to films all subbed in a wide variety of other languages. I'm a culture buff. My opinion is that exposing yourself to only one language and culture, namely English is plain idiotic. You're limiting your experience a thousand fold and aren't even opening up to other cultures.
Dubs limit interest in other cultures. If people think that "Hey fuck it, if it's not in English, I couldn't give a shit" what does that say for our cultural development?
@deathy62 Subs vs dubs is highly preferential. There is no clear winner, nor should there be. To completely write off either, is idiotic. Both of them have examples in which they are clearly superior than the other, and vice versa. Black Lagoon dub, for example, is pretty much on par with the sub-version, in my eyes. Which means I will probably watch the dubbed more than the subbed, simply because you may miss the aesthetic value if you focus on reading. Same goes with Baccano.
@Momentum139 People tend to opt for dubs, why? In my OPINION they're lazy bastards that couldn't be bothered reading or they're just not able to keep up with how fast the words go by. There's nothing wrong with "idolizing" the language of another country. It go miles in aiding cultural diversity and opens up a whole new world of understanding to everyone. The funny thing for me? Watching idiots go for dubs as proof of their inability to keep up with their own language let alone another.
@deathy62 i watch dubs because its easier to pay attention to the show and not words, i tend to enjoy dubs more then subs, there is an exception though, some shows are just better in subs. but black lagoon is a good dub. IMO. i think you should give people like me who enjoy dubs a break, everyone has their own preferences, its just when i watch a show i would much rather pay attention to the visuals rather then words.
You realize that doesn't make any sense? Going for an English dubbing of anime means you understand that language (or at least grasp it) and therefore have the ability to read it. How does that count as an inability?
People tend to opt for subs, why? In my MUCH FUNNIER OPINION TROLO its because they've been desensitized by two or more animes into believing one language is awful. They limit themselves, and they've trapped themselves into srvitude to one langauge.
@Momentum139 Your second paragraph applys to English dubs aswell. You're saying subs limit people to one language? Quite wrong because you maybe listening to Japanese but the language you're reading is most definitly English ^^. Aspects of two languages go into subs. Subs don't limit but incourge. Dubs limit. Dubs are without a doubt the corniest shit I've ever heard. They make an anime aimed at 15+ seem like a fucking 5 year olds show. They're a disgrace to the anime.
@deathy62, well, name an anime that sounds childish. I'll negate these as simple "agree to disagree"/don't mention these: Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Black Lagoon, Dragonball Z, FullMetal Alchemist, Serial Experiments Lain, Fooly Cooly.
Tell me an anime that went from a SERIOUS ATMOSPHERE to an extremely JUVENILE or otherwise inappropriate atmosphere solely because you weren't listening to a Japanese accent?
Let's backtrack. I feel its silly to say that Japanese dubbing is inherently better because its in Japanese - I can name several animes that sound decent/better in dubbing. I think, in a nature vs nurture concept, we all develop in different ways - its the way you start, what you watched dubbed in the beginning and what you watched subbed that determines your taste. I do occasionally watch subs when I have no choice. Short of that, most anime I prefer dubbed. However, I also feel...
that similar to the generation of "Justin Bieber sucks" and "Osama should have been tortured to death in the US" and "Lindsay Lohan is a (insertgenericinsulthere) people on Youtube have developed a kind of consciousness gathered from listening to previous generations that simply leads them to one conclusion - that there is an inherent truth; one they may not even believe, but solely adapt to to fit in. With subbing, it feels like the lot of "sub only" people I refer to started with a bad...
first go at anime dubbing. I think if I asked someone about what anime they've seen that had bad dubbing - the most easily predictable responses will be Naruto (which I slightly disagree with), One Piece (highly agree), Gurren Lagann, Bleach, and Dragonball Z. But those aren't everything. I think if you got a dose of superior english dubbing (compared to the above list), the intolerance for dubbing (not stating that you specifically have one) would be lessened.
Forgive me if I'm digressing, but there are good dubs out there. Of course there's Black Lagoon, there's Samurai Champloo, there's Afro Samurai, there's Pokemon. The list goes on. I'm not denying you your enjoyment of subbing (At least not here), if you're not the one I'm talking to then I apologize, but if there is someone reading this that believes all dubs can go to hell, then this essay was written directly to you.
@Momentum139 "How does that count as an inability?" Speaking from personal experince, I've seen people complain about subs that can't even fucking spell. Unlike your ONE occasion where a Japanese person said subs were btter, all I have to do is click on any video in the description and take a gander at the comments to see the illiterate idiots complain about subs.
@deathy62, you're comparing my one occasion to multiple occasions of your own?
Click on any English dubbed video, or look on the Bandai trailer for Gurren Lagann. They're not necessarily illiterate, but a LOT OF PEOPLE complain about the dubs. Arguing where it started is pointless. I'm saying that by watching a dubbing you at least understand that language. That I'm fine with, but saying a language you don't understand is inherently better? It irks me.
