I know that I'm probably a couple of years late for a request, but on the off chance that you see this, if you did a video on Drinking With You, it would make my life. Thank you at least for your time ^.^
hmm its tricky... if you imagine that there is 16 potential strums (moving your wrist 16 times down, up, blah) in a bar (in this case the amount of time he sits on most chord patterns) then i THINK the strumming pattern would look roughly like this
D---D-DU-U-UD-DU
the D means Down stroke, the U means Upstroke, and the dashes are where your wrist strums air...
I can kinda play the song, it just doesnt really sound right. I learnt from chords before I watched this vid for the first time. I just can't mute it at the right parts, like when he shows at 1:37
Thank you heaps, Dave! I specifically visited YouTube to figure out how to play The Future Soon, and now I've run my way through the whole thing, thanks to you.
As a noob guitar player, I must say you were an excellent teacher. Thanks.
don't feel like searching for a link, but here ya go:
D is simply the chord name, along with anything else next it, ie, A7sus4 x02030 is named "A 7 sus 4." I'll spare you the theory of how they are named for now.
The second part, for example, xx0232, shows how to form the chord on the guitar. each space is a string, with the lowest on the left and highest on the right. (cont. in next post)
the two x's in the lowest spaces show that the two lowest strings are not used in this chord. the 0 on the fourth string shows that string is played open. the numbers on the three other strings show what fret they need to be played on. play the third string on the 2 fret, the second string on the 3 fret, and the first string on the 2 fret. Hope this helps!
You, sir... are my frekin' hero. As you can see by my name, this is one of my favorite songs! JoCo is probably my favorite Acoustic Guitarist and one of my favorite musicians!
Once I found this, I immediate subscribed and favorited this song.
I don't play guitar, but I love this song and it was great to see and hear the chords involved without the words. Thanks for making this, I'm sure it's helping a lot of joco fans! :D
Nice job, dave. These will be really helpful. I learned Skullcrusher Mountain on my own and play it a slightly different way than JC, but it works well for me. Maybe I'll upload it as a response sometime to your lesson. We'll see. Thanks for doing this.
For the very last chord in the bridge, I like to play an A7 with my index finger added to the first fret of the first string. (A 7th Flat 13th)

I consider amazing that you're teaching me how to play Jonathan Coulton song and you're wearing Lemon Demon T-shirt. You just won the internet!

At 1:03 he did a semi-slow-mo chunk of the intro that looked like D-DUD. I kinda wish he did more at the beginning with that.
Your way sounds fine to me, when I can get my brain and hands to work together.

In the first verse, where you lead into the G with an F# and the base note.
what's the fingering for the F#? I can't figure that one out?
Sorry for the beginner query :\

I use my index finger to grab the F# and middle to grab the G.
