a common charasteristic of the american quartets is their "violence" while playing...this can be an "extra gear" in music of the late 19th century and 20th century.... however it sounds a bit exaggerate in beethoven, haydn.... nothing to say about their shostakovitch (great)....but....
Beethoven sure knows how to write for string quartet!

I suppose that's a matter of personal taste, really. However, it sounds to me as if the music calls for "violence" in a way.
