@ThaHonestTruth - Funakoshi said in his 20 precepts, "Practicing a kata exactly is one thing, engaging in a real fight is another." I only care that you see the fight in my kata because the rest will follow.
@Iluminista991 - Kata were a way to practice and remember self-defense moves. Over the years, many of the applications within kata were lost in time leaving a ritualistic method of practice. Many people are attempting to rediscover these lost applications or bunkai through diligent research.
@trosanelli I heard it wasn't just about remembering, but to also build muscle memory to help do the moves instinctively while not thinking about them.
@jadekayak01 - They believe Itosu, Funakoshi's teacher, created the Pinan's for the elementary school system which dates the creation around late 1890's to early 1900's. There's currently two schools of thought on how they were create. Some think it was an adaption of Kanku Dai and others believe it was originally a longer kata called Channan that was broke into 5 parts.
@trosanelli That is very interesting logic as "karate" or "te" or "tode" was not in any school in Okinawa except
DOJO.The kata could not have been created for elementary schools in Japan as Karate was demonstrated to the Emperor in 1920 at special invitation and supported by the top Judoka of the time-Kano.
Gichin Funagoshi's teacher may have invented or adapted them from another kata but the original kata used for Shotokan were Taikoyoko for real basics then the Heian series.
This reminds me of a kata we do in my style of karate, Tora Kai Shito Ryu. It's called Hinan Shodan. The moves are slightly different but the directions are basically the same.
Korean Karate (Tang Soo Do) systems also practice these kata; they are termed, "Pyungan", which is a Korean pronunciation of the term "pin-an". Ankō Itosu O-Sensei was taught the Chiang Nan kata from a Chinese man living in Okinawa. The original form of the Chiang Nan kata is lost. Itosu formed 5 katas from the long Channan Kata which he thought would be easier to learn. The 5 kata were Pinans Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, and Godan.

Nice. The techniques are fairly sharp and fast. I'm of the shotokan school that uses the lower stances, but this is decent for your style.

@Kuraixluv - Funakoshi switched the order and changed the name of the kata when he went to Japan.
trosanelli 5 months ago
@trosanelli Is that right?,if so it was in 1920 that he did so and the Heian and Pinan kata are older than that
