Battoning with a large blade

i had one of those machetes i broke it yesterday batterning some wood in the back garden it has a hollow handle it broke in three places it was a good tool though

so i had saw tht concept before, n went to try it w/ a medium size fold out blade. n it shattered the blade down n broke. maybe cause i used a metal hammer, n shouldve used wood?
