Swanson was big, but never the biggest. By 1920 Norma Talmadge had eclipsed Mary Pickford as the top female Star in the world. A position she maintained for several years. And Norma was still a Top 5 Star up to 1929. Constance Talmadge wasn't far behind her Sister in fan polls up to 1927. For a period of about 5 years between 1923 to 1928. Nobody was any bigger than Colleen Moore. In 1926 and 27 She was the number 1 rated box-office draw in all of Hollywood.

What I find ironic is that as others mentioned, as a Hollywood starlet in the 1920s Gloria Swanson had an affair with Joe Kennedy, father of JFK and RFK. 40 some odd years later, both sons would carry on affairs with Marilyn Monroe. Im a silent movie freak and Gloria is either number 1 or 2 on the list of the greatest female silent stars. The other woman that challenged her was Mary Pickford. I think Gloria was the best. Her performance in "Sunset Boulevard" was one of the best performance any actress ever did.
