Most of my friends have a very heavy accent beacuse they speak too fast as they are shy or think if they do it fast it makes tehm a great English speaker...WRONG!!
Absolutely fabulous! From the pacing of the info, the example of good diction, the positive message, the mood of the presenter.....everything was absolutely A1!
And aside from the craftsmanship of the presentation the need for this type of training is HUGE...the self consciousness, reluctance and even embarrassment felt by those who need this training the most is gone with your chosen medium!
(And this is coming from a long time very picky teacher known for frugality when it comes to praise!)
Most of us learn a language to earn a living....and get information........I have nothing against any accent.... including my own....but the fact is that "English" is a global language today because of US.....had US chosen "German" or "Russian".....or "Spanish"......or a "Native American language " as it national language.....we would be trying to learn that language !......
@BETO1BETO2 youre not alone =] I have an accent when I speak english and Im trying to get reduce it, and not to stutter as much because its coming back to me :)

@Davidzapper if you didn't notice, the description for the video reads, "Instantly improve your American English pronunciation." This is not a tutorial to improve your British accent. Cheryl, As an SLP I can't thank you enough for beginning with "Always Speak Slowly." So many people have been misled to believe they should speak as quickly as possible. You and your materials are wonderful! Lisa
I speak German and French and learned English as a second language. Now, writing and forming sentences has become easy for me, but the english pronounciation always kills me and shows people that i learned english two years ago -.- Also when I get nervous or whenever someone asks me something on the street, I answer quickly and stumble over my own words... So, I really appreciate people like you who try to show us how to speak properly :)
Help. I'm asian. It's hard to speak like you T.T I pronounced: A em spiking mo sloli (I am speaking more slowly), but it doesn't sound like yours. I have practiced alot T.T
This video is great. I can see what I am doing wrong and I will take your advice on speaking slowly. I will practice on my speaking english slowly to help me out at work. I will look forward to more video to help with my english.
I am going to be the teacher-librarian of my school and since I am Filipino, my accent comes out. Since I will have to read books to my students, speak in assemblies, I would need to practice my English reducing my accent. I will follow your lessons faithfully.
You must be an annunciatologist. I do like this though, I work in the IT feild and work with alot of people from India over the phone. I like how you are respectful as well as informative. Also, they should make videos like this for every language. I would like to learn Japanese someday... I wonder if speaking foreign languages slower would help too.
Come to the South ---- we do this naturally ;) We do tend to speak slowly and at least, traditionally, draw out our vowels. Good luck to all the English learners, it must be frustrating at times. Now, I need a series of videos like this for French.
My writing in english is almost completely fluent and well.. I don't have any problems in written assignments. I know 7 languages so it really kills me that I have an accent when speaking english since english is the language I use the most. I hate it when I tremble over words. I am a good writer. But I am a bad speaker. I am a singer and you would've thought it helps me, but unfortunately not! I tremble over the words and I get a stupid accent. Teach me to speak faster and more clear!
I sent you a "Thank you " note about an hour ago but I'm not sure if you received it or not. So just to be on the safe side, let me say once again, " Thank you very much for answering my question so quickly." I will keep what you told me in mind and will be your faithful student. Thank you very much for being such a wonderful teacher who cares so much about the learners.
Thank you very much for your advice. I think you are totally right about speaking slowly helps eliminate accents. But you know, Ann Cook says we shouldn't slow down if we want to acquire an American accent. Is she wrong? Or slowing down is the first step and then we should speed up our speech after a while? I have been wondering about these conflicting ideas for a long time. I'd appreciate your comment. I can tell you care about us who speak English as a second language. Thank you VERY much.
If you have an accent when you speak English, then slowing down your rate will give you more time to get your tongue and lips into the correct place to form sounds. When you pronounce sounds correctly, your accent will naturally decrease. This means that speaking more quickly will give you less time to think about how to form sounds and will result in a heavier accent. The goal is not to speak TOO slowly, but to speak slowly enough so that you can speak clearly and be easily understood.
Thank you very much for such a quick response. I know I tend to speak fast, I will try to speak slowly keeping what you told me in mind all the time. I will be your faithful student. I appreciate your efforts to help people with accents. You are such a wonderful teacher. I wish I could meet you in person!! Please keep up your great work. Thank you very much.

I have added this video to my favorites and I have made my goal to learn how to speak slower, your video is fabulous, stimulating, interactive and the steps are super easy to follow.
A rule of thumb--Great Point! Thanks! Speaking slowly not only makes others understand what I am saying, but also gives me more time to think and get what I really want to say.
I have read many articles & heard so many audio to improve & improvise my command on English language. The first time I saw this video, i was sarcastic due to her long neck. But, then I watched it 3 more times,Now I have am very my influenced by the video, this is awesome effect. I'll share it with most people I know. This is worth practicing.
The key is not to speak too slowly, but to speak slowly enough so that you have time to pronounce all the sounds in words and to speak clearly. I'm glad you found the video helpful!
I remember of a person who have told me before that one way of improving your English communication skills is too speak slowly. But I did not really take that advice seriously and only now when I saw your vidoe that it makes sense. I mean after I saw this video, I recorded recorded myself reading a book and trying to read slowly and I found tat it really works. I realized that a lot of times I would mispronounce a word because I tend to speak so fast.
I was impressed. Pronunciation was clear. Message was clear. Thank you. I was very proud to watch your video. I am an American Accent Reduction Specialist in Los Angeles with online classes, telephone classes, and classes in Los Angeles, Southern California, USA.
Really you are awesome and to be true I do grammatical mistakes when I speak faster. So i changed my way of speaking and one more suggestion ' It would be better if you bring some liveliness when you speak. I feel like listening to a Robot'
Really awesome.. This to be true is the problem i'm having.. But speaking slower sometimes tests the patience of the listener particularly when you are conversing over the phone giving some instruction. One more suggestion 'I could not find liveliness when you speak which makes me feel like listening to a robot'.. sorry if i am rude..
Incredible ! I totally agree with you ! You know , I'm FRENCH and I usually don't understand anywords of what american people say , and here , I understood each world you pronounced ! You know ( from my FRENCH point of view ) I'd like the americans to slow down when they speak , in this way , everyone could understand them ! Thank you =)
hi.thank you for the videos they're really useful. i always speak slowly so people can understand me. English is my second language and im still learning it. I always have a problem in speaking front of the native speakers or anyone can speaks well.maybe because i know that they well know my mistakes in English ,so i get speechless. Is it because the confidence thing! i don't know..
hi rawan, the same happens to me, i get speachless when i speak to a native english speaker, i think its becouse i know they are better than me or... i dont know. i just wanna say ur not alone
This tip won't help. A person speaks quickly because he or she is nervous. This is the root of the problem what should be addressed. It's like treating ulcer with painkillers.
Everyone's natural tendency when they are nervous is to speak quickly, however if you work on incorporating these techniques into your everyday speech, you'll notice you have much more control. Iin the end, it will actually help you feel more relaxed and confident!
Yes, it does work both ways to some extent but you gotta address the root of the problem. The other point is that you don't know that you speak too fast unless you record yourself. Recording also makes you comfortable with negative feedback (listening to yourself is negative feedback) and as a result less self-conscious.
i already noticed that, it drove me crazy not to be able to comunicate clearly, so i've started to speak slowly which gave me control over my speech, i knw im a smart ass;-)
well it's not just nervousness it can also be frustration and excitement. i.e if you're in a heated arguement than that can cause you to speak quickly. Or if overly excited that too can make you speak quickly. Which is one of my troubles cos whenever I get overly excited I end up speaking quickly (even when I'm drunk haha).
A really informative video. I have always been in the habit of speaking fast and that is why I stutter sometimes. Speaking slowly lets me have control of my speech and I stutter much less.
I always get frustrated when some English words gives my accent away. Somehow I can't say "shorter" like a native American can. I pronounces it SHAWDER.
I'm convinced and will follow this advice. It's even quite encouraging to learn that I may speak much slower, since my attempts at speaking fast ("fluent") English always made this language rather stressful for me.
I've been speaking very fast all my life, and have only now come to realize that this habit is working against me. I'll follow your tip of reading slowly for 2 mins a day, and I'm sure it'll help.
Thanks so much for putting this information out there.
thank u so much for this videos, i will be using everything that u teach, and im looking forward to whatch the rest of the videos and i hope there are many more to come,
you'r awsome im practicing ur videos since 4 week im much more goos know thank you very much you'r realy helpin me thank you again for time....and please post more videos about american accent
As an english teacher, I sometimes have to speak fast specially when I am teaching advanced students. However when some of the speaking practice exercises require the stdudents to speak a little bit faster, I
The reason people speak quicly is usually to do with nervousnes based on phobia or hysteria.
.
Probably too difficult to work out why someone has this nervous problem, but just practising speaking slower would be good for communication even if the nervousness is converted into something else.
I had the same thinking about how to be fluent in english by speaking it in a fast way, maybe it's because rap is my chosen music, but after watching this video I've decided on not doing this anymore.
overall this video shows a good speaking point and is useful for those who are trying to sound like a native or at least are working on it with the hope that make it true someday.
before i forgot, THANKS A LOT FOR POSTING VIDEOS LIKE THIS!!!
Thank you for posting this videos I was born in Honduras and came to the USA when I was six years old. However I still have an accent but most of the time is more notocible when I speak fast.
This was really helpful thank u i am only 15 and i have a probelm everytime i get nervous i always speak so fast everyone just laughs and i have to say it all over again and its awful but with ur advice this is gonna help!!!!!!! so once again thanks:-)
I really love american english pronunciation!!! It's beautiful!! I'm learning english and I wanna speak the General American pronunciation (GenAm) The american sound is delicious to my ears...!
People who speak English as a second language often need more time to get their tongue into the correct position for sounds. Speaking more slowly will help their speech be easier to understand, which is the goal of any accent reduction course.
Even if one doesn't have an accent, it always help to speak slowly at ANY TIME.

I realized that a lot of times I would mispronounce a word because I tend to speak so fast.

Really you are awesome and to be true I do grammatical mistakes when I speak faster. So i changed my way of speaking and one more suggestion ' It would be better if you bring some liveliness when you speak. I feel like listening to a Robot'
MrLetmeknow 2 years ago
Really awesome.. This to be true is the problem i'm having.. But speaking slower sometimes tests the patience of the listener particularly when you are conversing over the phone giving some instruction. One more suggestion 'I could not find liveliness when you speak which makes me feel like listening to a robot'.. sorry if i am rude..
MrLetmeknow 2 years ago

Is it because the confidence thing! i don't know..
my name is Rawan from Arabia.

This tip won't help. A person speaks quickly because he or she is nervous. This is the root of the problem what should be addressed. It's like treating ulcer with painkillers.
Gerasim74 2 years ago
Everyone's natural tendency when they are nervous is to speak quickly, however if you work on incorporating these techniques into your everyday speech, you'll notice you have much more control. Iin the end, it will actually help you feel more relaxed and confident!
speakingyourbest 2 years ago 2
Yes, it does work both ways to some extent but you gotta address the root of the problem. The other point is that you don't know that you speak too fast unless you record yourself. Recording also makes you comfortable with negative feedback (listening to yourself is negative feedback) and as a result less self-conscious.
Gerasim74 2 years ago
i already noticed that, it drove me crazy not to be able to comunicate clearly, so i've started to speak slowly which gave me control over my speech, i knw im a smart ass;-)
thanks anyways
weisstbescheid 2 years ago
well it's not just nervousness it can also be frustration and excitement. i.e if you're in a heated arguement than that can cause you to speak quickly. Or if overly excited that too can make you speak quickly. Which is one of my troubles cos whenever I get overly excited I end up speaking quickly (even when I'm drunk haha).

I always get frustrated when some English words gives my accent away. Somehow I can't say "shorter" like a native American can. I pronounces it SHAWDER.
jwang604 2 years ago
I'm convinced and will follow this advice. It's even quite encouraging to learn that I may speak much slower, since my attempts at speaking fast ("fluent") English always made this language rather stressful for me.

The reason people speak quicly is usually to do with nervousnes based on phobia or hysteria.
.
Probably too difficult to work out why someone has this nervous problem, but just practising speaking slower would be good for communication even if the nervousness is converted into something else.
.
favorited.

JenJenTheJetPlane 3 years ago
People who speak English as a second language often need more time to get their tongue into the correct position for sounds. Speaking more slowly will help their speech be easier to understand, which is the goal of any accent reduction course.
