  • @Phantomrider05 - I did that a little while ago, but I think the guide cost around $40 and I also replaced the chain tensioner too. That was around $40. When putting the chain cover back on, I spent another $15 on the liquid gasket stuff. all in it cost me around $100 to do the chain guide. There is a good article on it on VWvortex. Just do a search on DIY under the 2.8l VRG 12v and look for the one about timing chains.

  • Yep, common problem on these cars. You might wanna do the headgasket while your at it.

  • i just got a 2001 jetta vr6 and it makes that exact same noise....how much did it cost you to fix it?

  • It actually turned out to be the top timing chain guide rail was pretty much all gone. I replaced that and the tensioner and the noise disappeared.

  • hi,,, try to check ur shifter rod...if not them it could be ur timing chain.... or other things
