@Phantomrider05 - I did that a little while ago, but I think the guide cost around $40 and I also replaced the chain tensioner too. That was around $40. When putting the chain cover back on, I spent another $15 on the liquid gasket stuff. all in it cost me around $100 to do the chain guide. There is a good article on it on VWvortex. Just do a search on DIY under the 2.8l VRG 12v and look for the one about timing chains.

im starting to get a mild sqeak mainly heard at idle on my 01 GTI VR6. serpentine belt and tensioner is what the dealer said will fix er up

Yep, common problem on these cars. You might wanna do the headgasket while your at it.

It actually turned out to be the top timing chain guide rail was pretty much all gone. I replaced that and the tensioner and the noise disappeared.

hi,,, try to check ur shifter rod...if not them it could be ur timing chain.... or other things
