  • George Martin presented this to the Hollies, telling them that the Beatles weren't going to release it. The Hollies didn't think it was a great song, but were flattered that the Beatles were "offering" them a track.

So, the band recorded it and it was released as a single, only to have Harrison bad-mouth it in the press, saying that they sounded like "session musicians." Guess what? That killed sales of the single, making it one of the worst-selling Hollies singles of the 60's. Thanks, George!

  • A-W-E-S-O-M-E!

  • Supposedly Lennon hated this version, he thought the Hollies simply ruined George Harrison's song.

  • @cardman880 I'd have to agree with Lennon. This is truly awful. I thought the Hollies would have been a great choice of band to cover this song. Turns out they weren't.

  • I love the lyrics to this song

  • singing and harmonies are fine its the rest that isnt

  • Not as good as the original, but still a great version

  • No cover can compare to George's original. To begin with, the signature intro with that great 12 string Rickenbacker. And George and Paul's harmonies are exquisite, George with the soft mellow vocals and Paul's rough and soulful edge..... quintessential Beatle harmonies cannot be replicated.

  • @1olrocker yeah I agree. It is a bold move to do a cover of a beatles song

  • Loving the Beatles as I do, I kind of thought it may have been a deference to the Hollies or the Byrds... perhaps I was wrong.

  • This song is way more superior to beatles. Beatles cover just doesnt sound so well.

  • @AlFastguy The Beatles version isn't a cover. This is the cover version.

  • the Hollies have great harmonizing, as great as any; I would put them right with The BeaTles & Beach Boys, tho the writing of the other 2 was much better.

  • George told an interviewer once to tell people he didn't write it for The Hollies. He also said he didn't like their rendition of the song. But one has to admit that it was perfect for their vocal style.

  • @RoyFive

well, the beatles version is much much much better, and noone harmonizes like the beatles, except for the beach boys and some 50s and 60s vocal groups who inspired them, like the four freshmen and the everly brothers.

  • a george song
