Hey! I'm in "Cat-research mode. I was wondering are all Maine Coon's big or does this vary? Also are the males bigger than the females? I don't know what it is, I just got a huge fascination of shear size when it comes to animals :P It's cool to have sort of a "tiger" in your house wanting to cuddle.

@asiandawn69 The males are significantly much larger than females, which is typical for a lot of the larger breeds. So of course, they generally cost more! It is indeed cool having such a large cat, but my boy was not at all cuddly. In general though MCs are very amiable, friendly cats.

@LesPaulRockerProduct We have a sheltie that is left unsupervised for up to 8 hrs a day. She is generally very good and only chews shoes if they are left on the floor (like toys). We crate trained her though, and she is quite happy to stay in the crate all day while we are at work. We leave her out if we are only going out for 2-4 hours. It really depends on the dog. Sometimes they are good, and sometimes they get nervous alone. You should always crate train your dog. I have a vid of her.

@LesPaulRockerProduct - shelties are not as destructive as some breeds, but dogs are social creatures and really shouldn't be left alone all the time, or can develop issues. As for the "try to escape" no shelties don't tend to run off, but they certainly might if they have no bond with you. I've never had a dog try to run off but then I put in the time to train it properly and build a strong bond such that they pretty much follow me around. Health - buy from a good breeder.

@LesPaulRockerProduct The biggest thing health-wise are chronic thyroid problems in shelties. Loss of hair, mange, all early signs of thyroid imbalance. The other health problems are, in older shelties, various cancers. We had one with a cancerous tumor at age 11 on his chest; it was successfully removed; two years later, he died of brain cancer. You hear this a lot with shelties, but it is the ONLY breed I would EVER own. They are so loyal, wonderful pets.

@LesPaulRockerProduct - agree with most of those comments. Shelties do tend to be food hounds, and mine will all get into the cabinets and any snacks they can find when they are left alone. Otherwise mine are pretty well behaved on their own, but I do crate them until old enough to be safe. Mine would never run off, they are more like velcro attached to my side! But I work hard to establish a good bond with my dogs, it's all the time you put into it that matters most.

That Coon's as tough as nails, and is a top notch squeaker. The dog looked a bit punch drunk during Round 2, especially after taking a right hook from the Coon. The coon gets the decision.

Cats and Dogs speak the same language, but they have different meanings for their words. A bat to the face from a cat means "Go away" to the cat and "Let's Play!" to the dog.

It depends on the pets involved. My shelties in the past have generally left the cats alone, and Boomer doesn't care at all about other cats, but these two just seemed to have a thing for each other. When introducing a new dog to a cat in the house, just keep them separated as much as possible for at least a couple days and then only with the dog on leash. Most cats quickly will establish the rules of the house. ;-)
