  • @ 3:10 that ends the competitive phase now Benoit is targeting perfection

  • i was 11 yaers old and saw this.this was my first look at a perfect game

i jumped up and down and high five my mom when he did it

  • I used to live for Saturdays to listen to Schenkel and Burton call bowling...both so smooth.

  • Benoit's first ball in the tenth was a poor shot but like all his others the ball just held the pocket which is characteristic of urethane bowls and carry down.

  • @ joeyrulz86 The oil had carried down to a point that Benoit could hook the ball in the track area and when the ball hit the carry down it set up into the pocket. All he had to do was hit somewhere in the track area and the ball would hold to the pocket. You could see a number of his shots just barely hold for strikes where if there were not as much carry down they would be through the nose or Brooklyn. So yes, the condition was fairly easy for Benoit that day.

  • I rember watching this

  • wow i just noticed that Benoit's approach and release is just like Del Ballard Jr's

  • Not trying to take away from the 300 but the lane conditions were so that he had a a HUGE margin of error on the lane. The ball hooked into the pocket form almost anywhere he hit. Ive bowled in lane conditions like that.. imagine ohaving over a 1 ft wide margin to strike with.

  • @rowland2110 well if that was the case, nobody would shoot under 300 and there would be more the number of 300 thrown on tv.. it is easier today to shoot 300 than back then.... not even close.

  • @joeyrulz86 What im saying is the lane conditions were perfect for the ball he threw. It doesnt happen often but i have experienced it myself. The oil was such that i could hit anywhere between the second and third arrow and the ball would hit directly into the pocket. If i was a little to the left, oil held the ball. To the right the lain was dry enough to make up for it. Nerves got to me and i ended up with a 297.. oh well.

  • @rowland2110 yeah i can agree that the lanes were oiled for him, but that was almost the case for everyweek back then.. but idk... i didnt bowl back then... im the new age bowler so it was hard to comprehend then angle they played.

  • the 12th shot for Benoit was nothing less than perfect!

  • Nelson Burton Jr. says "If the dear Lord wants him to have it". Cut me a break.

Benoit bowled the 300 game, not the dear Lord.

  • I attended this championship round. It was pretty amazing especially being his first ever TV appearance. He made several more shows afterward, but I haven't heard anything from him in the last several years. Does anyone know if he's still on tour?

  • abc broadcasts were great. chris schenkel and burton made a great combination.

  • Amen, ESPN does OK now but Chris and Bo were fantastic in bringing you into the very house they were describing the action.

  • DEAD FLUSH,3 in the tenth for all the wheat,awesome,300 in title match bob you WIN,best shots in the tenth i ever seen,100,000 coming home remember it like it was yesterday

  • Hey, whataya know, a Brit that loves the old ABC Pro Bowlers Tour, a real piece of Americana. Kudos, my friend. Great post. I say this way too often, but it's true; they don't make 'em like this anymore.

  • "...and if this doesn't get your heart pumping, I doubt if there's much that will." -- Chris Schenkel

First of all, what a perfect shot. Second, what a perfect call. There is just *something* about these ABC telecasts that contain such suspense, such gravity, such a classic feel.

  • I know exactly what you mean. There was a drama that the old Pro Bowlers Tour provided when someone was pursuing 300. The espn telecasts seem so loud and cheesy by comparison. There was even a tournament on espn when the crowd was still chanting and cheering as a bowler was about to throw the final shot. That's just so redneck stupid. Times have changed. With the telecasts today, a 300 doesn't seem to be a big deal anymore.

  • Chris Schenkel was the glue. His voice was so resonant and reassuring. Every word delivered by a lifelong professional broadcaster. Then you had Bo, sounding forever young and earnest, knowing everything about the sport. Today, we have Randy Pedersen, who sounds 27, and Rob Stone, who sounds 17. Between their voices, the fog, strobe lights, and excessive graphics, ESPN has stripped any semblance of class from the PBA shows.

  • Fog, strobe lights, excessive graphics....sounds like new bowling centres that are thrown up. I don't like all the screaming, mouthing off and poster waving either. Bowling fans will fill a place for a PBA show without all the add on gizmos anyway.

  • @blackhawk54 But without all the excess energy, many people would get bored and stop watching. No people=no sponsors= no pba. This is what was happening when abc dropped the pba. The pba was fairly close to folding before those microsoft guys bought it.

  • @blackhawk54 There really isn't anything we can do about the graphics because everyone does that now, but I agree that the team for ESPN is not best. Stone to me sounds like he just doesn't belong. To me, they should bring back Dave Ryan (still not ideal but the best they have). Chris Barnes has been okay on color the few times he's done it so I would go with him if he's not in the stepladder (for a time Johnny Petraglia filled in for Bo when he made a stepladder on ABC).

  • Big smile on my face at Bo's comment at 3:56. :)

  • You know, Bo was running Benoit down in the early part of this match. Only when it became clear that a) there was history being made and b) that Roth was going to lose, did Bo change his tune.

  • When a 300 game still meant something..

  • And notice that he pummeled the pocket all through the game; no wall shots (not that there's anything wrong with that when you can get that!).

  • Exactly. Such a simple delivery style! I love it.

  • Thank you for your perfect reply; you see Benoit's style and also recognize that is Mark Roth.

It is always a pleasure to hear from fellow bowling affectionados!

  • No trip 4's either!

  • That was a $127,000 reaction. $100.000 for the perfect game and $27,000 for winning the tournament.

  • This was his very first TV appearance as well.....on top of that, he used a 15-pound ball.....and.....not a bad roll in the bunch.

    cd

  • Thank you so much for posting this!

  • a perfect game for Bob Benoit, that is so awsome!

  • I've seen Benoit's 12th ball and reaction so many times I've lost count.

  • I was amazed the first time I saw this tournament. Gets better every time! Thanks thiswilldoblue!

  • thanks for the post! This is a match I will never forget!
