  • Great vid and a lovely choice of music. I never got the chance to play FFE but I did play the original Elite on the BBC Micro and Frontier on the Amiga. There are no games around like these today. I just wish Elite 4 would get a release or even re-makes of these classics for today's modern consoles.

  • @DLiberator78 thanks! Then, I'm sure you'll be glad to know there is a FFE remake called Pioneer. Check out my other videos for ingame footage. Pioneer can be downloaded for free, it's an opensource game made by volunteers and it's not finished yet but it's incredibly awesome! If you like FFE I advise you to download the latest Pioneer build and give it a try. It's not for console though, PC only...

  • @KingHaggis Thank you so much for telling me about Pioneer. I've not heard of this and I will check it out and being opensource is a bonus. I will check out your vids on Pioneer. PC is fine I am going to try it out. Have you heard of Tau Ceti? This is a re-make of Elite also. Check out a channel called 'pidigi' he is the guy developing it and it is looking good. I dont know when it is going to be released though if it ever does get finished but it looks cool.

  • @DLiberator78 yes! I sometims visit his website to check on his progress. At first, when he mentioned on the Elite forums he would make an Elite tribute, I wouldn't think he'd get this far but the game is actually shaping up very well. I actually have high hopes for his Tau Ceti game :-)

  • @KingHaggis Me too! He has done some amazing work on Tau Ceti and the graphics enghine from Ogre3D is working well. its a shame he doesn't have some other programmers helping out with development as it is a mammoth task for one person but I wish him all the best luck with this project. I would love to see it eventually released even as alpha.

  • ahhh , elite 3 . This is absolutely awesome game. The UNIVERSE , with billion of billions stars , and you can go to every star. Every object spinning on a orbit. Absolutely physics. Galaxy on your PC (or even smartphone/ppc) .

  • This reminds me of the time I landed on Jupiter on FE2 on my Amiga 600. Wanted to put my mining machine onto the surface to see what I could get back. Took forever trying to land, constantly correcting because of the ridiculous gravity Jupiter has. Managed it after a couple of hours, chucked out my mining machine and it couldn't find anything. Meh. Happy days!

  • @s00zster LOL, yeah, especially in FE2, a moonlanding was kinda tricky. In FFE it's easy.

Check out Pioneer if you want to play an excellent Frontier First Encounters remake by the way.

  • oh man... this reminds of the times I spent the whole night playing Frontier... I had a Tiger Trader (the largest ship to use a fuel scoop) and cruised the galaxy from one end to the other... I found a couple of those glitch-systems, located 1000 of lys from Core, and I wanted to go there without using "wormholes"... To bad the Mining Machines never worked...

  • Excellent point about the depth and detail in games. You could play FFE for hours, and still have the feeling that it was a complete universe, with planets that would behave like actual planets. And that universe was enormous, probably bigger than some of today's MMOGs.

  • @quadturbo4 thanks, I completely agree. Check out my video for Pioneer, it's a remake of FFE with awesome graphics!

  • Make more videos like this please

  • @RandyLahey911 I'm glad you like it! If you want to see more videos like this one, you should check out my Pioneer video. It's in my video list. Pioneer is a modern remake of Elite Frontier with much better graphics.

  • @KingHaggis It looks like the same 3year old that designed the user interface buttons in Elite3 did Pioneer.

Nothing seemed to work properly on that piece of shit, from the sound FX to the turrets shooting yourself on the larger ships to the autopilot. It was still a joy.

  • @RandyLahey911 well, Pioneer is a remake after all, so it should look just like Elite. But if you want my opinion I'd rather see a good new cockpit with more advanced functions instead of the ugly 2D icons. I hope the creator of Pioneer wil one day "move beyond" Elite and create an even better game instead of making something that looks exactly like it. I'm very fond of Elite but with Pioneer's planetary engine the game can be made much better than just a remake. Glad you like it by the way.

  • NEWSFLASH:

A new Elite Frontier remake/tribute is available for download. It's called Pioneer and it's bloody awesome! Check it out!

    Google for Pioneer Spacesim

If you like Elite Frontier First Encounters, you're going to love the breathtaking procedural terrain on the planets of Pioneer.

  • funny isnt it.. i cant think of another game made since where I can just fastforward and watch the moons orbit, and the planets orbit etc..

Oh how I long for a sequel with up to date graphics :(

I've been hoping and checking frontier.co.uk every few months for the last 10 years

  • good job dude ! I found out about infinity recently. hpe on it too.

I spent so much time of my youth to frontier. Probably too much. But when i played it, i was out there, in space. Jumping from system to system. when i played at night, i would occasionally go out to our kitchen, look out of the windo and observe the stars, lol. well, one of greatest games ever

  • That looks more realistic than the apollo moon landing! WE BEAT THE SOVJETS TO THE MOON!

  • Whats the music to this ? Its so calming and so spacey lol

  • @gartut200 from bladerunner

  • @walter0bz Thanks bud :D

  • This was an awesome game. Spent so much time enjoying flying around the galaxy.

Sure it was so buggy that before the first patch you couldn't take off without it crashing.

And sure they cut almost all of the premade missions from the game as they rushed it out the door.

And sure the graphics are VERY dated.

But for me age 10 this game was a real wonder, and one of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had.

Games have tried to copy it but with mixed success.

  • Heh I love the ship, ex-millitary Imperial Courier, I'm flying an Asp but I'm saving up for one right now

  • 2:36 is that a station orbiting io?

  • If they ever make an updated version of this, they could actually use the data we've gathered on various extrasolar planets since the mid 90's to help create truly authentic star systems.

  • me too though I cant see the icons on the dashbord they dont show up for me

  • if anyone wants to play an improved version of FFE message me

  • do you mean that russian remake?

  • Yeah and its awesome, i cheated a little though to get the Thargoid ship and it still looks great even if i ported it over from a different pc, long story, but theyve done wonders with it. Hope you enjoy playing it as much as i do

  • @raeka4eva consider yourself messaged then! i'm using jjffe right now

  • I tried mining. But I only found minerals or water. It didn´t seem to be worth the effort. I prefered to trade using my panther clipper.

Combat was a pain in the ass. When attacked I accelerated at full thrust ahead and used my turrets to fire at my pursuer.

  • i always knew the moon was made of cheese

  • music is from bladerunner soundtrack.... nice... ♥

  • do you play with dosbox? by the way, a promising project for space sim fans is infinity - the quest for earth.

  • WHERE THE HELL DID YOU GET THAT SHIP!

  • Dunno... somewhere at a tradecenter in the Imperial sector. It's an Imperial ship you know...

  • i already know that but landing on moons isn't just for nothing but you can mine materials from it with a MB4 mining machine.

  • @jobert512

Imeprial Courir can be purchased. The one you see in the Elite FF demo :-)

  • Wow - how did I miss this game?

  • Awesome!!

  • Procedural animation, SPORE was our last hope but since EA was involved we shouldn't have hoped for that much.

  • LOL, yeah. Unfortunately, Spore was a bit too boring and cartoony for my taste but the technology behind it was promising.

I really do hope Elite IV isn't going to be vapourware cause it sure is beginning to look like that.

Maybe some day, gamedevelopers will know what true gamers really like and the world will see another great sci-fi space/trade/exploration sim with seamless planetary landings, lots of freedom and gameplay, money to make and things to blow up :-)

  • exactly, but now we living in times where games is going backwards with inteligence and going all for graphic for f@$%!@ kids

nice music, its making tear in my eye when wathing this unike game and recal all that time I spend playing ;( beautiful feeling....

I love cosmos much than everything else

  • You're right about spore - the technlogy was what alot of people like me want - something not so complicatedi t blows ur head off - like FFE ect - but nothing so simple ur only comment on it is -.- i really hopped spore would be that game - god it was a dissapointment!!! Luckily i think i've come as close as i ever will to a piolet a spaceship not to complicated game - with homeworld 2 - yes its not the exact thing but its dam as hell fun and it ivolves spaceships so its close enough!

  • You guys should look up Infinity: Quest for Earth. It´s a gorgeous in-development, procedurally generated, space-sim. And it was inspired by Elite.

  • Infinity: Quest for Earth. google it.

  • @KingHaggis search infinity pre alpha tech demo

  • @detibry I already did. It's bloody awesome. It's going to be the Next Gen Elite :-) I hope it gets the attention it deserves, I've been following development for quite some years now. It's amazing how it's being developed by only 1 programmer and a bunch of volunteer modeling artists. Too bad it'll be MMO only. I hate monthly subscription fees but maybe for Infinity I'll make an exception.

  • Hey it's an opengl version.

Is it possible to run it on macos ?

  • its not opengl ... use dosbox for simulation

  • Actually it IS a mod to run it in opengl

  • Elite in OpenGL? OMG, can you please tell a link to download it from?

  • there is now an EVEN BETTER version of it... its a RUSSIAN mod in D3D... and it doesnt just "run" on D3D... they have COMPLETELY overhauled the graphical engine. Now you have ships each one with thousands of polygons, water with reflection, etc.

Its still in development... check for FFE D3D on google and youtube!

  • In regard to your comment about depth in games, especially this one I completely agree. I miss it also but if another such game was to be made it would have to be with a small independant company or garage geeks company.

Mainstream companies wont take any risks in making games anymore. Thats why theres so few new and good games these days. Most of them are sequals.

Soul Calibur 4, Fallout 3, Diablo 3 etc.

    Nothing original or innovative.

Its a sad time for games.

  • Here's an interesting wikipedia entry regarding Elite IV:

"At the 2008 Game Developers Conference in Germany, David Braben hinted that an announcement regarding the game's release would come in 2008. Braben stated that the new version "would certainly need a better interface, or at least one which is easier to use for modern gamers.""

  • I loved this game and still have it BUT could never complete the main story as there was a major glitche during one of the last missions where you had to do something at a military base or something.

I used to love landing on planets ^_^ Cant do that in the X games though. Poopy ~_~

  • Nice choice of music, there. A very skillfull landing as well, particularly challanging out in the bush like that, with unpredictable atmospheric conditions.

Also, might is say that that is a lovely Courrier you're flying there! One of the Ex-Military models, I think? A fine ship to make your career in His Majesty's navy. Wish you could fit a military drive or a fuel scoop though!

  • I fly a courier myself, Im mainly just saving up for a trader or something even better but its a fine ship Im flying right now anyway.

  • I drive a thargoid myself. Fantastic ship. Mine has a cargo of 32,000. Someone told me this isn't possible, but when I completed the alien mission I kept my finger on the sell button when I reached normal space and sold most of the goods then saved. Now when I fly this ship it has 32,000 cargo. WTF! And it jumps with minimal fuel usage.

  • this was 95?! they were way ahead of their time

  • I love this game. I wish the music in the game was this good. And I hope someone does a remake. The only thing I would change are the graphics and remove the bugs and make the police more intelligent (why chase after only me dammit.)

  • I want more videos like that :-)

  • that video was beautiful [: thankyou.

  • it really shocks me that procedural generation on this scale is nothing new. like WOW!! wish i had this game when it came out. why isnt there a more graphically pleasing version of this out now? id never get sick of it! a whole galaxy to explore! btw what is this music?

  • Indeed, procedural generation has been around since the dawn of video-gaming history. Rogue, and of course, The original 1984 Elite's Universe was procedurally generated as well. Though much of the frontier universe is actually a strikingly accurate map of our own galactic neighborhood. Back then we didn't call it 'procedural' though. We called it 'random' ;) Will Wright can be thanked for popularizing the term in his Spore demonstrations i think.

  • great video!

can i ask, what is the music?

    thanks

  • Excellent video and choice of music. Not to mention manual moon landings are not easy!

  • Hmmm I think the moon landings in ffe are easier than the same thing in fe2...just practice

  • Wow impressive!!...perfect choice of music....this video let me play this great game again^^. Can someone tell me how you can switch into fullscreen mode? ctrl f12 doesnt work....

  • The elite games have such atmosphere, sitting in orbit around a planet, with your engines turned off, is really truly amazing. The depth of the game is inspiring.

Great video, and perfect choice of music.

  • Yep yep, other games after 10 years can't achieve the same depth.

  • Whats the title of this song?

  • It's called "Rachels Song" and it's part of the soundtrack of the 80's sci-fi movie "Blade Runner". The soundtrack was made by Vangelis.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for your comment. This vid was made using "GLFFE". It's a OpenGL remake of the original First Encounters game. It's exactly the same game but modified so it can be run from Windows XP and it supports high resolutions. Also, the controlpanel has a different skin. Apart from that, it's still the same old 90's game.

  • If there is to be a "holy grail" amongst games, then this must be it. Truly a relic from a time when they still knew how to make games. How I miss those days.

  • Thanks for your comment! It's a great game indeed. With thousands of starsystems, each with their own unique planets and moons you can land on in realtime, how can one not like it? If you're interested in this game, google for glffe. It's a free opengl remake of the original FFE.
