  • Hey, ik this is an older video, but im thinking about replacing the 4 x 6 speakers in my 2002 grand am gt with 5.25 Infinity Kappas, I was just wondering how difficult you think this would be, and also, would i be fine buying some kind of brackets online versus bulding my own out of wood?

  • Looks nice!

  • Nice work, How do you like these speakers? just picked up 2 pairs on crutchfeild buy 1 get one 1/2 off lol.

  • @JoshHperl

Actually, they are really good. Huge improvement over those 4x6's. I'm glad I took the time to do this, 'cause it was worth it.

  • @Whuntmore Glad to hear it, thank you.

  • @babyscorpi100 yes.

  • I have an 04 Grand Am and it had 4x6's in the front doors. I just replaced mine and put 4" Kenwood speakers in. After seeing this video I kind of want to put a pair of 6.5s in! Great video, and if I decide to do it this will help out a lot!

  • nice carpet

  • my 2001 pontiac grand am se for sure has 4x6 speakers in the front doors? I'm asking cuz my bro doesn't think i have the right size speakers for the front doors n the size speakers i bought are 4x6's

  • @babyscorpio100

I'm 99% sure. All those Grand Am SE have 4x6's in the doors from 1999 up to (I think) 2003. Do you have a Pick yer Part auto Salvage near you? You could always go to one of those places, see if they've got the same year (and model) car, and pull off the door skirts to double-check. Pulling off your door skirts are pretty easy, you could always Loosen one, and check that way as well.

  • @Whuntmore Alright naw i don't have one near me, but i will check tomorrow just to make sure they are 4x6's that fit in the front doors, but thanks

  • @babyscorpio100

    Good luck Scorpio!

  • @babyscorpio100 All Grand Am's from 1999 to 2005 have 4x6 speakers in the front, even the monsoon equipped ones.

  • Alright what size rear speakers are in a 2001 pontiac grand am?

  • @babyscorpio100

they should all be 6x9's. Every car I've seen in a salvage yard, or worked on, they are all 6x9's in the back deck. From 1999 to about 2003, the grand am's are pretty much the same cars. I have the Polk Audio db 691's in the back. They sound sooo good, people actually thought I had a small sub in the trunk. Another plus to the Polk's db series, is they are made to be in a boat. they will put up with sun, spray, salt, etc.

  • Do 4x6 speakers really suck that bad??

  • @babyscorpio100

They don't suck that bad... Let's just say that the 6.5's over the 4x6's are a huge improvement.

  • just so you guys no its the same basic idea for 96-98 grand ams also. i did same thing bout a year ago and i have 6.5 pioneer components in my 97

  • @Whuntmore I prolly will, just depends on the time and money situation lol!

  • @hondafanatic17 Ok, keep us posted if you do. Good luck on it!

  • @Whuntmore I have a Saab now so it has normal speaker sizes lol! 4 inch in the front and 6x9s in the rear. But I'm doing a custom fiber glass set up for the rear to house 6.5 components. Also thanks for the little video then on your door speaker conversion. It helped me with doing 6.5 component kickers in my friends 96 grand am.

  • @hondafanatic17 - That's really cool. Are you gonna video and post this mod? That would be great to see. I'm glad my video helped. Nothing is more awesome then taking good and making it better.

  • @Whuntmore as I think about it, 3.5s are pretty terrible but in pretty sure my first car I had was worse 1978 chevy chevette with only one 4x10 in the dash and a AM/8-track stereo! Woohoo was I living it up in that car for 3 months till took a shit.

  • @hondafanatic17 - Yup I remember those (thought they were 4x7's) but yeah, they all sucked pretty bad. those odd sizes and tiny sizes. It's the only way to go. get proper speakers for your car, and rock on.

  • I hate grand am door panels! Fooling you into thinking there is a 6.5 under neath the cover, but its a 4x6. The most lacking speaker ever made.

  • @hondafanatic17

That's funny because once I found out that there was only 4x6's behind there, I thought the exact same thing. But if you think those are lacking, you should get into an older car that used to have those old 3.5's in the corners of the dash. Now those suck.

  • Due to this great video, I did not have to wait on someone to change my front speakers. I am in need of help again. Do you have a video on changing the back speakers on a 99 pontiac grandam. (Independent Woman)

  • @shontrey PM Sent.

  • I think you should have bumped them a bit before putting the door back together, that way you could see if they're gonna have room to slap around, you can tear them if the oval cuts the membrane.

  • id did this to my 93 primera - i bought the adapter plates for 4x6 to 6.5" which were meant for a chevy cavalier (i think your car aswell) - 20 bucks - easy job - just took off the door cards put adapter up to door marked 4 holes and drilled - took me about 30 mins - much better sound - those 4x6s are shite - too tiny - good job mate

  • hella clean install but i have a question. what is you adapter made of? MDF? if so what size did you use?

  • @jdm89accord yup, I used MDF and it was 3/4 inch.

  • @Whuntmore Thx for the reply

  • why not just buy the polk 4x6 speaker? the db461 is a true 4x6 and the other 2 (db and mm) are 4inch speakers with a separate (but still together) tweeter.....

  • @bastec666

Because I wanted to put bigger speaker in the doors.

  • @Whuntmore eh, i guess i can accept that as a legit answer...... but usually door speakers (aftermarket at least) are usually made for mids and highs, which imo doesn't matter the size, as long as it can handle it and produce the sounds right :D but hey to each their own. plus you did a great job with the custom work. so props :D

  • @bastec666 I did look into 4x6 from Polk - the db and MM. moreover, Visions store gets in the odd batch of polk 6.5's and 6x9's, and nobody buys them. Then they reduce the price to clear them out. I don't think people around here have no idea what Polk is. Anyways, I got them for $68 plus tax. Now if I had to order the 4x6's it would have costed me double. There is a reason to the madness. Regardless, I still wanted to size up, and that cinched the deal. Thx for the kind words.

  • do you think i can fit a set of 5x7's in the doors of my 01 grand am gt with little to no fab work, i picked them up and didnt even look at the size, they just looked like 4x6's

  • @bigbradc2009 - Hard to say... the holes are oval so that's good, and there is some room for the magnets, but under the door covering is a different story. Considering my adaptors were about 7 inches (Tabs for screws) it could be possible. but if I were you, don't have extended tabs. just make the oval plates (something like I did) and then just bolt it to the door under the speaker lip. It might work. I actually was gonna put 5x7 in the door until I got a good deal on these.

  • maybe i can do this in my alero. beacuse the 4x6 xplod speakers don't give enough bass for me. this is helpful

  • @classof2k10 To be honest, I haven't done this with an alero, but I'm hoping it's the same or at least close. yeah, those 4x6's lack compared to a good pair of 6.5's. The 6.5's fit perfectly under the grills of the door panel, like it was made for a possible upgrade. Good luck on it!

  • I am a 39y female and I did not want to wait around for a male friend to do this for me. so i went on you tube to see if there was a video that wound show me step by step on how to change my speakers. Thank you, this was perfect for me.

  • @shontrey

    Glad it helped.

  • i want to do this kind of stuff to my 96 grand am gt..but the problem is that i can take it off..but i can never get shit put back where it was..lol it never fits back lol

  • If you mean once you've made the mod? I was lucky. There's a modded adaptor that you can buy that fits under my door panel. instead of buying it, I just made one.

So it's kinda cheating, but it still worked.

Maybe check out some of the forums out there. There might be a good mod for you, and you could still get everything back to fit. Check out 'gaowners(dot)com.

  • I did this mod because I've tried a few other 4x6's, and they don't fit well in the original bracket. Since I would have need to do some kind of modding to fit other 4x6's properly, I decided to do an upgrade in the speaker altogether.
