One of the best songs, beautiful voice. Imagine what this genius could have achieved if he didn't collapse in the late 60s.... I wasn't even born back then and only discovered the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson recently. It is almost as if this song was a last outcry of his soul before it was numbed down for the next 20 years (or more?) - only to come back as an old man.... Very sad. I wish they could have helped him back them.
This is Brian's last burst of genius before mental illness really took a hold and crushed him. He was very much into drugs by this point but the complete originality and ability oozes out of him anyway. Scary to think he had more room to grow after the masterpiece of 20th century music that is Pet Sounds. High or not, he's so in the zone that he's performing one of the rock era's most rich, complex compositions with his eyes closed nearly the whole time. Daaaamn that's when you know you're good.
What an absolutely gorgeous creature--that Brian Wilson in 1966-67! I think the longer hair made him look younger and sexier. He looked older 3 years earlier when his hair was shorter
i just adore this tune....it's my fave by the boys of the beach. the way it was finally arranged and produced was absolute beauty and perfection imo. such a gorgeous and haunting melody. this song is also a reminder to me of how much more important music is than lyrics. i don't think anybody actually knows what this song is about, but it doesn't matter, because the music is so won, won, won, wonderful. i love it.
Jesus, the guy was only like 24 at the time, what had I dine by 24, got stoned too much and stumbled through a succession of jobs I hated...Amazing to hear the song in the raw, and what a song...A
@brianjlevine I've always been amazed at that. I sound like crap when I try singing along with this song! I think Carl did that part in the studio version of this song?

Just imagine if SMiLE had been released in 1967!?!? I think Rolling Stone would have a little different order of top 500 albums.

this should be added to the library of Congress. But then again like back in 67, they probably still wouldn't get it...

the center/masterpiece of SMilLE, a true"teenage symphony to God", still able to blow people's minds.

Wow, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) pretty much owes his career to this song...he even uses the lyrics "struck the street" on his most recent album. This is
sublime stuff, excited to hear the rest of the original album!

Amazing how easily Brian does that nearly one octave slide up to falsetto. That is incredibly difficult. One of the most beautiful songs ever.
