I could never understand why the husband didn't say, 'Git wumman, I ain't abandoning my kids for nuttin. If there's not enough food, YOU leave.' Weakling
In the version the Brothers Grimm originally collected, the parents--father and mother, not stepmother--both agreed. The Grimms had some parental issues of their own, though, so they rewrote many stories with absentee mothers, absolved fathers, and wicked stepmothers.
Since our versions come down through the Grimms, we've inherited their hang-ups.
@Waitakeredame From a child's standpoint, it is reasonable for the husband to agree. In most marriages husbands and wives present a united front to a child even when one parent might not be totally in agreement with the other. What if a father said to a kid, your mother is totally unreasonable and I don't agree? Of course this issue is a life and death one, but to a child little things like staying up an extra hour or not eating greens, can seem like life and death.
@Waitakeredame You have to think of it after the time period the story was written in. Back then your children were your retirement plan, so to speak. They were the ones that took care of you when you got old.
Looks so fun. But, I'm sorry. Those folks aren't so poor as to leave the kids in the woods. That's poverty, sure. But they don't look like they're living in abject poverty. Nicely laundered clothes. Ha!
Greetings from "Gretel"..... 34 years later! What a wonderful experience that was, and what wonderful films Tom has made. They will continue to stand up to the test of time.
When my mother would read those fairy tales of the Gebrüder Grimm to my brother and me, I didn't speak any english at all, infact I didn't really know there are foreign languages, and my brother hadn't lost his life in a motorcycle accident. So, the world was still alright.
Fairy tales end happily. Too bad you didn't stay to the end so your child would realize that these kids can make through difficult circumstances. My own grandchildren watch this show over and over. I watch it with them and hold them in my arms. They love this show.
I borrowed this film from my local public library branch for my little boy to watch. I was so disturbed by the way the witch was portrayed that I turned off the video after her appearance. I'm sure it is very well done, but I just couldn't watch her performance. It reminded me of a nightmare that I used to have as a little kid!
I remember seeing this on TV in the early 80's. It always creeped me out, but I loved it anyway. Where can I watch the whole thing? please post the rest of them.
The film is on a dvd with Bearskin and The Frog King from Davenport Films in Delaplane, VA. I made this film in the early 1970s when my children were babies. They loved this story.
Like all films it was fun but also hard work. In in 1970s there was no video. You made films on 16mm film which was expensive. There is an account of how we got started on my web site davenportfilms dot com. Go to the "Behind the Scenes" section in the left sidebar.
We also have a video series Making Grimm Movies about how we made these kinds of films. I will put that series up on youtube soon.
These were filmed not too far from me in Virginia...I got this one on vhs

I used to show this film 25 years ago when I was a children's librarian. It was one of the children's favorites. You're right- it is a classic.
