Fred was placed there by the infected, they didn't lose all the humanity in them!(the weird behavior where the infected male puts his face into the sunlight and the alternate ending both prove that). The infected male recreated the trap that Neville made to catch the infected female.

At the end he is randomly shooting the buildings because the infected are inside and are watching him (most buildings have windows that keep it dark inside).

That should clear up some stuff.

@buttersdus Its simply a scene to mess with your head. If you watch it very close you can honestly see fred's head move, there are videos of close ups seeing it. Some people think that that is really just the dummy from the store, but with the head moving along with his body moving up and down after he is shot, it almost makes you think he was one of the zombie guys.

When Robert Neville sees Fred standing outside in the street, he starts flipping a shit, because that means that SOMEONE moved Fred there, which is an extremely disturbing fact to Robert, because he knows that it's the mutants that did it. Which is why he starts shooting everywhere. The mutants put Fred there as a trap.

in the book they are actually very smart. it's extremely different than the movie but in the end they basically evolve into an intelligent colonization and end up reforming the world. they wear nice people clothes, form a system of government and law enforcement, and even adapt to live in the sunlight. i know its messed up but that's just how the author wrote it :I it was kinda depressing. Especially since in the book they end up killing/eating him and he doesn't get a heroic death
