My research and experience suggest otherwise. Calling a professionally-run school a "McDojo" and believing only a smelly basement can be authentic is, in my opinion, anachronistic. I see from your profile you are in Australia. Is it credible to call someone a fool from half a planet away without knowing them?
Ah, so you are a "whatever" type of person. People aften fall back on "whatever" and resort to insults when their position is indefensible. If that works for you then I wish you a long and happy life. For myself I strive to find out what the truth is. I have done this, and the truth is this man may look like a joke to you in a youtube video. But he is not.
Why so many Fred Vilari haters? I take Gracie Jiu Jitsu now, but 20 years ago I took Fred Vilari Kung Fu. It was cool. His guys can fight. They actually taught submissions before anyone knew about Ultimate fighting.
To anyone who attends Fred Villari's school, seriously, try these moves on friends that don't go to your school and see if they work. They won't. Your opponent is not just going to fall down on his back because you pushed his head to the side. You're not going to submit anyone with those armlocks either.
As a practitioner of this martial art (not as Villari's sudent), I say that you make a fair argument. There is very little chance that advanced moves like this will work in an actual situation, if tried to apply in the order it was taught. However, all of these moves are just tools. In an actual situation, every tool is at the defender's disposal. More often than not, all it takes to stop a fight once it's started is a good punch, palm strike, chop, kick, or whatever else to the solar plexus.
Mr. Villari is not just "pushing his head to the side." There is much more going on here. You can't tell that by looking at this video, unfortunately. So it may seem ineffective on youtube, but that is misleading. Ditto the arm locks. You can't see what is really happening. More to the point, you can't feel it. If you did, your opinion would change.
@mastersjh I'm not going to rag on your training, but I think you should check out a bjj/submission wrestling gym and try some of these moves out. With no control of the hip or legs, you're never going to keep someone down while you only try to control the arm. The whole "grab their head like a football" isn't going to get you very far either, except either on the receiving end of punches or having them change levels and take you down while you hold your arms out like a zombie.
Actually, you are all wrong. Martial arts came from Italy. It happened when my great, great, great Grandfather Marco caught his wife cheating on him with the town butcher. Marco yelled, Whats a-matter for you-you whore!? And then bitch slapped both of them. Thus was born king fu. Wait! Maybe it was in Texas.
nice try dude.but all japanese martial arts originated from china n simplified to be caled their own.true,a judo guy may be able to toss a chin na guy around if the chin na guy is unable to secure a lock but a judo guy would get RAPED by a shuai jiao guy easily.coz the basic principles DERIVED from shuai jiao
nonsense. japanese joint locking techniques originated with their sword arts. the greatest influence china had was striking. but all you kung fu guys think everything comes from china i guess
i have read practially every history of jujutsu i could find. never once has any of them mentioned shuai jiao as even a small influence, let alone a big influence or the mother art jujutsu was derrived from. there are records of grappling in japan that predate any recorded direct influence from chinese martial arts.
I agree with you some part of the statement you made. I have never come across any jujutsu book that has credited chinna or shuai jiao. However, the Japanese have never credited the
Chinese for much of anything. Considering that there system of writing originated in China, it is plausible that China could have been the origin of jujutsu. Heck, even the Japanese style of dress was Chinese until the 1500's.
but the japanese aren't the only ones who've written history books. i believe all arts are related in some way but that doesn't necessarily mean that one comes directly from the other either.
@jackylin24 Okinawans are Austronesian people who speak a Japonic language.
Not all Americans have British ancestors but we all speak English, and very few Okinawan have Chinese blood though culturally influenced. DNA dont lie. lol
there are records dating back previous to that, that demonstrate jujutsu type techniques. noone is saying china had no influence on japanese arts. but i just don't buy that they came directly from china and that's all there is to it
well yeah, no one said that that Jujitsu is entirely came from China. All I am saying is that Chinese arts had an influence not only in strikes but grappling too
@jackylin24 Kito-ryu history states that the founders heard of and studied techniques from Chin Gempin aka Chen Yuan Ping in the 1600s.
Later they traveled to China to study the art further. Strangely Kito Ryu is also mentioned as one of the main influences in Kanos-new art Judo, from which most of the techniques derived from besides Fusen ryu and a few other minor arts. Jujutsu is a fusion of native and in some styles Chinese/mongolian and or Korean wrestling.
@kempobrad Dude....lol The oldest written records in Japan is the kojiki and thats 680 AD! very very recent and anything else is ever more recent. And Jujutsu as a term was not coined till the 1600 a.d(fact). Which is the time when Kito Ryu claims influence from Chin Gempin in 1600 a.d. Strangely only after 1600 did various Jujutsu styles emerged with there typical jujutsu techniques. Before then the samurai arts used a version of Sumo as there base.
just a note to make things clear. chin na is not really an art itself. It literally means joint locking, in Chinese Martial Arts it is used as a term to describe the technique of controling joints and tendons. Different styles of Kung fu has chin na techniques incorporated in it. Thats why you see White Crane Chin na , tai chi chin na, etc. You will never see Chin na as style on its own.
Well, my point, seven months ago, was not to judge anyone based on their knowledge of martial arts, but to judge them by their LACK OF KNOWLEDGE concerning Fred Villari. Until you actually experience what he can do first hand, you simply are in no position to judge his skill. Simple truth.
Mr Villari is moving slowly and teaching as he goes. If he were really being attacked, he wouldn't move slowly or pause to tell the attacker what he was doing. I know from personal experience that that Mr. Villari is the real deal. I suspect you have never been a uki for Mr. Villari. If you ever get the chance to uki for him, and still have the same opinion, I will respect that. But untill then, your opinion will remain uninformed and therefore not credible.
Sorry my friend. You are wrong. You're like a very good chess player annotating a master's game, thinking you know what is going on. But the reality is, you don't. And until you play the master and experience it for yourself, you will forever believe that you do.
well.u r rite.he doesnt have the stance or natural combat stance that normal masters have.u wan REAL chin na masters,go china, coz theres where its from anyways
Shaolin Kempo Karate is awesome, its not like Tae Kwon Do which is for "self defence" but in reality is a competition sport(I could explain in further detail). It's a combination of different martial arts such as Chin Na, Jiu Jitsu, Kung Fu, Shaolin Temple Boxing, Kempo, and various other styles of Karate. The benefit of combining them is that the weaknesses that one may have the other fixes. Thus making a well rounded martial art that focuses on real life situations and how to handle them.
why do these masters always assume a aggressor will start by grabbing their hand? Compliant partners for the win. I'm not impressed. Weak sauce like most TMAs.
Dude, you simply do not know what you are talking about. There is a reason foe everything, including why "these masters" assume an aggressor will grab them by the hand. You say you are not impressed. There is a reason for that too. Get some first hand experience about this subject, then make a judgement. Until then, your credibility will continue to be suspect.
credibility? excuse me, but what gives you the credibility to judge another human being based on their opinion of the martial arts? yea, i totally agree with the point you were trying to make. but, it is a little corny that Villari is always going to assume that the aggressor will grab the hand. not one person has ever grabbed my hand. they punch, tackle, grab, kick, etc. not JUST grab the hand.
yes, you are right on that one. but, you must teach from more than one kind of attack. such as punches, kicks, takedowns, etc. as you promote thru the ranks, you begin to work off of multiple attacks.
not even he has mastered the art so well he can do it with zero effort but still be power full. i attened one of his seminars, never underestimate the person you are fighting no matter what size.
Why does his gi looks like something from an Elvis-impersonator shop?

Simple truth.
mastersjh 2 years ago
Maybe not, but I CAN judge this video. I find him and these techniques wanting.
shadowcii 2 years ago
Mr Villari is moving slowly and teaching as he goes. If he were really being attacked, he wouldn't move slowly or pause to tell the attacker what he was doing. I know from personal experience that that Mr. Villari is the real deal. I suspect you have never been a uki for Mr. Villari. If you ever get the chance to uki for him, and still have the same opinion, I will respect that. But untill then, your opinion will remain uninformed and therefore not credible.
mastersjh 2 years ago
So let me get your understanding of martial arts straight.
If you do bad technique fast, it becomes good technique?
So you understand me. I dont think the speed of his demonstration is lacking. Infact, I fully understand the need to move slowly so he can instruct.
What I find lacking is his basic technique including: footwork, balance, posture, tension, and many other basics that I would expect from a "master".
I'm happy to be his uki with technique like that.
shadowcii 2 years ago
Sorry my friend. You are wrong. You're like a very good chess player annotating a master's game, thinking you know what is going on. But the reality is, you don't. And until you play the master and experience it for yourself, you will forever believe that you do.
mastersjh 2 years ago
So says the man who thinks this guy is a "master." LOL.
shadowcii 2 years ago
You just proved my point. Ignorence is bliss, dude. Rock on.
mastersjh 2 years ago
You know, I just watched this again to make sure we were talking about the same guy, and I think we are so, I have a question for you.
What exactly do you find masterful about this video specifically?
And I don't know how I proved your point earlier, would you explain that aswell?
Please help me understand where you are coming from, I am dumbfounded by this conversation.
shadowcii 2 years ago
well.u r rite.he doesnt have the stance or natural combat stance that normal masters have.u wan REAL chin na masters,go china, coz theres where its from anyways
stygianmessiah 2 years ago
Did I critique his "stance"? I critiqued his balance, posture and footwork. Chi-na masters don't lose their balance like this man.
He is a phony and a master of nothing, except extracting money from ignorant people.
shadowcii 2 years ago
i agree he is a hack of a teacher

True, very true

As I said before, if you don't like it, why don't you go and try and take his belt away from him?

Weak sauce like most TMAs.
sfgx123 3 years ago
Dude, you simply do not know what you are talking about. There is a reason foe everything, including why "these masters" assume an aggressor will grab them by the hand. You say you are not impressed. There is a reason for that too. Get some first hand experience about this subject, then make a judgement. Until then, your credibility will continue to be suspect.
mastersjh 3 years ago
credibility? excuse me, but what gives you the credibility to judge another human being based on their opinion of the martial arts? yea, i totally agree with the point you were trying to make. but, it is a little corny that Villari is always going to assume that the aggressor will grab the hand. not one person has ever grabbed my hand. they punch, tackle, grab, kick, etc. not JUST grab the hand.
USSDvegas 3 years ago
i think most martial arts schools assume an attacker is going to do a single attack. the point is to help your student with the ability to react.
kungfupanda2u 3 years ago
yes, you are right on that one. but, you must teach from more than one kind of attack. such as punches, kicks, takedowns, etc. as you promote thru the ranks, you begin to work off of multiple attacks.
USSDvegas 3 years ago
maybe this video is only focusing on one attack? i have no idea...i don't own it and i'm not defending anyone here.

Yeah ussd's how to steal money from your students bank account.LOL!

some believe jujitsu derived from Chin na
jackalwillis 3 years ago
chin na isn't exactly its own style of kung fu. chin na is in every style of martial arts...including taiji.

not even he has mastered the art so well he can do it with zero effort but still be power full. i attened one of his seminars, never underestimate the person you are fighting no matter what size.
