  • Haha - 6:21 - 6:24 Made all sense.

  • GOOD THING I MARCHED QUADS lolol

  • woh sounds like a sick moose! lol awesome ,love your vids man,you are a great techer and everything you say is exactly what I have come to eventually realise whilst playing at home, wish i'd of watched these sooner! also what's amazing is I actually watch the whole vid without skipping forward once which is unusual for me so goes to show you keep it interesting dude with your fun attitude :)

  • 4:07 kinda sounded like it had a little electric wheelchair influence in it

  • LOL Marching match sticking is like looked down upon where Im at.

  • Very Cool Vanz, thanks. Try putting your headphone chord through your shirt, behind your back. A little trick i learned in the studio.

    -Al KIng

  • its just like double bass just with the high hat instead

  • Brilliant lesson :)

could you do a lesson on how to start playing doube bass? Just some techniques or how to get better and better would be so helpful to so many budding metal players!!

I play single bass but needed some left foot skills for double bass and just some time keeping skills so thanks very much RVP!!

  • I have been trying to nail this for so long!! Finally!

  • MY GOOD FOOT IS THE LEFT ONE, AND MY GOOD HAND THE RIGHT ONE. AM I CURSED??

  • @Katakomves Same here, just set your drumset up as if you were left handed (left hand on the Hi-Hat, right hand on the snare) but instead, play open handed (right hand on the hi-hat, left hand on the snare, as usual). This will take some getting used to, but it can work out great.

Also, your "curse" can greatly help you when finally playing double bass drum.

Another thing you could do is take about 15 minutes a day to train your right foot. This also will help with Double bass later.

  • @jUnk134l1f3 you mean the hi-hat in place of ride ? thanks for the tips

  • @Katakomves No you just grab your drum set, and completely switch it up, the Hi-Hat goes to the right instead of the left, the snare on the right, instead of the left, and your floor tom to the left instead of the right. Get your left foot on the bass pedal. However, you keep your right hand on the Hi-Hat, and left on the snare. So instead of the usual, which is your arms being crossed, your arms don't cross, and you should be able to to see your Hi-Hat pedal.

  • all of this sounds dirty im better than you

  • I would like to sell your DVD on my web site

  • Randy, I love yoou! haha :)

  • WOOOOAAAAAAAH,

It Sounds Like A SICK MOOSE!!!

  • john bonham style moby dick

  • Great sense of humor,Randy!!!

  • nice miller lite trash can. i prefer coors. and acoustic drums...but good advice here. thanks.

  • you speed up right after you say you count it down slower. 5:48 then back to fast by 6:09. drummers should be well trained playing with a click

  • Randy Van Patten at his funniest in this video.

  • sp this helps 4 way independence right?

  • yeah

  • I can't hit so fast. Does that just come with experience or is there a trick to hitting right or a way of holding the sticks?

  • You'll get faster with time, you just need to buy up your wrist/arm muscles. However, the way you hold your stick can affect your speed just as severely. There are plenty of online sources you can use to check your grip.

  • do you have a video in which u use a exercise that u use hit hat but in the bass u go with 2bles

  • good laughs to be had ,

    this guy rules

  • The website is back up and running. Thanks for your patients. RVP

  • 3:50 is hilarious and im gonna buy the dvd

  • Haha! Skull Candy headphones!

  • Why did you get 5 thumbs down?

  • Amazing vid as usual, by the way, what kit model is that??

  • TD-9

  • If they put this vid on the Roland website, I'd guarantee they'd sell more kits

  • @MagicMoose18 roland td9kx and I love the one I have

  • great sense of humor, i love watching your vids

  • u should do a vid on snare drummin... u kno marching stuff... it'd be cool to see, just a suggestion tho

  • lol sick moose i love watching his channel

  • wow ! Great !!!

  • curse yourself ha ha ha

  • funny man.

  • hahaha this guy is a clown xD he's my favorite guy to watch to learn anything new :]

  • "Sounds like a sick moose" Best ever.

    Love your tips and lesson.

    Apploudes from sweden

  • you´re changing the tempo, speeding up your feet, when doing more complex moves.

love your lessons, thank you van!

    from brazil

  • funny guy. good drummer

  • I'm in love with this man.

  • for his drumming skills right?

  • A good and concise lesson for independence; some excerps sound slightly like Neil Peart's "the rythm method". Sorry for my english.

    'Salute you from Mexico City.

  • good, this is a wild boys pattern from Duran Duran

  • This one very good but weckl and dannis chamber I like them more, especially weckl, I do not criticize my you not at all nothing, for the style, but they are tastes, listens to a drummer for youtube george kollias, notice the speed of the double bass-drum :)

Not very much English, but do not criticize me jeje

    I am an Argentinian :D

  • This is an exercise ... hes not trying to play anything special. Just build independents and muscle memory.

  • If this one quite well, only I say what seemed to me, but if you have reason

    byebye :D

  • A sick moose!!! ah a hahahaaaahaaha!!

However, thak you for your lessons, really! pretty nice!

  • muy bueno

  • whoa hahaha this is hilarious

what was that noise at the end....?

  • its my first time watching this guy. and i love him!

he's not just funny, but also plays well! keep it up!

  • Hey Randy you inspired me:P i see you have the module between HH + toms instead left of the HH

    nice groove :D cya

oh. 1 more question. Why dont you buy a 12" snare and put the 10'' (snare) to the right so that's ur 2nd floor ? does that fit ?:P

  • I like the Hi-Hat more spread out. I really only goof around with this kit and it is more for kids. I am not really going to invest much into it. RVP

  • Ok. ye I agree with you. Where the hh is ''supposed'' to be it is @ an ''unrealistic'' place.

I have the 9KX too. I use it for everything, also for gigs. I think im gonna upgrade it = VH-11 / CY-15''

Why dont you use the e-kit for serious playing?

i know i know an acoustic kit is 1000 times better. Playing the acoustics gives an awesome feeling, a feeling i dont get @ e-kits:O

    grt. Leander

  • he seems like a funny guy and i really do love his techniques and he really seems like a great drummer he really does

  • Doesn't teach foot independence, good starting point for double bass (that's how I learned it before I bought my pedal)

  • Do you have a myspace or facebook or something?

  • Both... just search the name.

  • great drumming

  • holybleep!

    Vanz GREAT Drumming

  • Great video, helped me a lot. What kind of E-drum kit is that?

  • ROLAND TD-9. RVP

  • but Van doesnt really care what make or model stick you use , whats important is that you center you chi in regards to art of drumming.

and just practice your "drum fu" grasshopper.

oh and dont mess up yourself up with "metal" drumming, heavy rocks good, classic rock blues, jazz just stay away from the "trash metal"

    it ruins your chops

  • i have the same drum sticks as you!

they say "made in usa hickory" right?

  • they dont say anything...their drum sticks they cant talk geez!

  • damnit i mean what the words on the sticks say

  • oh thats different, hmmmmm they must be Pro Mark's, but what size are they??? thats the real question. they might not be the same as Vanz, ya know!

  • blaap dapdoodledow bddaap da da plow! van your awsome bro great learning vids.thanks

  • 1:20 is great xD

    Great Vid btw.!

  • EPIC! sick moose lol

  • thanks van... clips always help!

  • man your awsome, at drumming and teaching

  • these are drum basics, mastering this(what only need some practice) is one of the most useful tools you can use while drumming, Could you add a lesson with parradiddle grooves(ride/bell/snair accents)?

  • Check out my Drum Kitadiddle and Drum Kitadiddle 2 video. Also see my Hi-Hatadiddle video. All on my channel.

  • I think that's the point.

  • Wo!

You dare to dis this master?

Note he is thinking and talking - using his imagination, and DELIBERATELY speeding up.

  • Sir, you are a sick moose. I have been having difficulty figuring out the beat to Sabbath's hand of doom. I do not know if you give tutorials on particular beats, but would you be able to point me in the right direction.

  • Oh you want more? hahahahahahahaha

  • Wow man props im gonna go home and try this all your vids are very good

  • nice miller lite trash can =)

  • Thanks for the videos. You're a great drummer.

Constant hi-hat independence is the hardest thing to do for me as a beginner. Still trying. My calf gets sore with the pedal.

  • "Whoaaa sounds like a sick moose"

  • u r funny and good drummer

  • how many drumsets do u have????

  • Just a few. Ha Ha. My Yamahas and these Rolands are my latest. I have Mapex that I won years back at a Mars Music Drum Comp. RVP

  • damn van...you are the man brother.....your a riot bro...lol

  • my legs would start twitching out once i started playing sixteenth notes

  • it's like bron-y-aur stomp by zeppelin

  • try putting the cable from your headphones inside your t-shirt first then plug it in..it should stop you getting tangled up with the cable.keep up the good work the vids are great.

how do u make ur fills faster?? i practice often but it taking way to long..

  • Just like anything with drumming. You have to take your time and slowly work on it. Gain good control and keep it in time. Speed will come in time. RVP

  • My question is, have you gone completely electronic, or are you just using the Vdrums for purpose of the video? I've always thought your acoustic set sounded really great, which I'm sure had some studio "effecting" help...just wondering.

  • No, No, No. Just for fun and in the transition of me building a new studio. BTW... my acoustic kit had no effects. Just plan sounds good. Thanks, Randy

Just one question, you see, i'm a lefty, and i was woundering if this would work for a left-handed/footed person.

  • great teaching randy !!

  • great! ;)

  • hahha love the ending!!!!

  • If you want to build great independence between your hands, and your feet, Do paradiddles with your hands, and meanwhile, do paradiddles with your feet, except twist it so when you play right paradiddles with your feet, you play left paradiddles with your hands, and alternate.

  • I've always wanted to know how to know that! Thanks man!

  • You're so good! You make everything look so easy!

  • I love watching you play because it looks so effortless. Thankyou once again, for posting videos.
