how you can compare this game with Mahler 1st symphony for example?
you know, people are confused!!! they say "ohhh i'm an electronic musician" NOT!!!!!!!!! they are Maclovers!!! (or PClovers)....heyyy not ofense but....did you feel your heart pounding with this???
NO!!!! is good for a pijama party, or like the ouija game, this is not music love!!
I'd be willing to bet that the conservatory kids commenting here probably wouldn't think much of Negativland or Glen Branca either. Since your parents heard of Phillip Glass and the Beastie Boys you can make a leap to that being art. This is some kids trying something new. There's a craft in breaking new ground. Why don't you make a post about what you're doing that's new before you complain about what these kids are doing?
I love macs, and I've played in an orchestra for 7 years, so I think I have the right to stating my opinion about this. Although the ambient sounds created sound rather interesting, calling this an "orchestra" is a complete joke. And I am shocked that Stanford of all schools would have students who would waste their time making "music" that doesn't even take much effort/skill or even sound that great.
Sigh. What do you mean by effort and skill? Do you think these sounds magically manifest themselves from the laptops. Obviously someone had a creative vision and saw fit to make it a reality. Look at the enjoyment these individuals derive from their expression. Granted this music doesn't fit into your limited Luddite world-view. Its called experimentation. They are trying to discover new kinds of musical expression. I don't understand how someone could take issue with creative expression.
you have to know you're in a box to venture outside of it. these textures have ZERO memorable qualities about them unless you connect them with a visual element.
this is basically free improv with non-musicians at a "top" university.
it would be more interesting if the sound was being produced by 9 year olds. drivel, not high art. it's a very expensive joke. the school & professor should be ashamed of themselves for offering this crap as part of a college education.
would you call it a painting class if you gave people a bunch of paints to just pour out on the floor?
This really has nothing to do with the fact they are using Mac's, any computer could be used. Also the fact that you have played in an orchestra for 7 years doesn't really mean your opinion on this music any more valid. I'm assuming that you really have no idea what effort went into this anyway. At least they are doing something new and interesting, apparently they do that kind of thing in universities. Please tell us what boundaries you pushed in your seven years in an orchestra?
That was one of the most monumental and daring musical concepts I've ever seen. I am an experienced musician and this reminds me of The Velvet Underground meets Brian Eno meets every 15 to 27 year old with a laptop and Protools. Brilliant 1st step.
I agree, knowing quite a bit of what went into experimental music 40-50 years ago with people such as delia derbyshire and louis and bebe barron, I think things like this while not musical now have the ability to create programs that could generate useful ideas later. Back then no one seriously thought that all those bleeps, blurps, whirs, whines, throbs, hums and screeches generates by circuits and tape splicing (early sampling) would become so dominant in modern music today.

It never ceases to amaze me how the human spirit will find ways to express our most inner thoughts and emotions. For surely, that is the essence of art, not the medium itself. I am a musician and I play blues, a very traditional musical form generally played on very traditional instruments, but I must say, this is fascinating. Well done.
This is...a sad, sad abomination of music. I'm very scared and worried that this is the abysmal future of the world's art. Rest in piece Music. We had a good run.
It's sad... sad that you are so close-minded. With people's knowledge and ability expanding exponentially everyday there are so many opportunities to broaden the horizons of art, among other aspects of life. Clearly, this idea is still in its early stages, but they are experimenting to create something new... If all people felt like you we would still be listening to single-line Gregorian chants.
Ohh this is really interesting. I first heard about it on the Mac website then i searched youtube for it since I had never heard a performance on it before. Theres also an article on Anything Tech about it - "A Macbook Orchestra", it was really interesting and had this video on it. Google's a great tool for finding out info (:
very enjoyable and joyful music. i especially enjoyed the spell-check moment. obviously a deep spiritual emotional experience was felt by everyone in the room. the solo demonstrates a deep connection to the french roots of this inspirational music. btw where can i get one of those cool pillows?

"stop changing the randomness parameter?"
wtf?
they gotta stop saying they're an orchestra.
and they've gotta stop shaming the Stanford name with this nonsense.
quick! fire whoever got the money to put behind this drivel.
this has very little to do with 'music' and more to do with Ego.
Is there one 'laptop orchestra' that delivers something musical?
this could be crazy, but it ain't.

at first it sounded OK, but then at 2:21 it was like "ouch". If something is that complicated it should sound way better than it does.

I forget where the pillows were from? They are from some website that specializes in yoga. Google is your friend.
