If 2 consensual adults want to get together, couldn't they create their own institution instead of changing one already there?

I like what you have to say. Civil marriage is just that- a civil institution. But there's a right way to grant SSM and a wrong way. So far we've been doing the wrong way. I don't want people who are, for religious reasons, opposed to SSM to be legally forced to support it. Unfortunately this is already seen to be the case in the states where SSM has already been granted. SSM can be granted as long as people's beliefs are respected and upheld, so that both can coexist.
Marriage is defined as a male and a female OR a female and a male. The institution of marriage is not defined as people of the same-sex. Even in India, a male married a dog. ...not a legitimate marraige.

We can accept homosexual people having their life style (and they will live their life style whether or not they get a marriage). I'm not against the gay community getting rights at all. They name of lists of thousands of things they can't enjoy under the law. Marriage is one thing, and whether or not it is granted does not affect whether the gay community will be able to achieve equal rights. If marriage was a right, marriage would have to be changed so that anybody could marry whoever they wanted in whatever configuration. If everybody can marry, than what is the purpose of having a privileged institution? There is none.

Recent Gallup polls agree with my position. They show that 89% of Americans are in support of equal rights for gays, such as job opportunities and serving in the army. Only 39% of Americans are in support of gay marriage. Most see a very big difference between what is seen as a "right". Love is universal. Marriage is not- not everyone can marry. The gay community is not being denied anything, since they don't meet the requirements for marriage. Should an unqualified pilot fly a plane? No.

Go back to the pilot- an unqualified person wouldn't be allowed to fly, and this person wouldn't change the rules so that he could. The single most important characteristic of marriage has been one man and one woman- changing that in any way creates an institution by its nature not marriage. In the 60's, there was no reason why interracial marriage shouldn't occur, but this is different.

In the 1960's when interracial marriage was allowed, it didn't in any way change the fundamental characteristic of marriage- that it is between one man and one woman. Gay marriage would change that characteristic. Plus, allowing for gay marriage would indeed change some things in society- this is not at all just about nomenclature (though we've been told otherwise). If 2 consensual adults want to get together, couldn't they create their own institution instead of changing one already there?

I like what you have to say. Civil marriage is just that- a civil institution. But there's a right way to grant SSM and a wrong way. So far we've been doing the wrong way. I don't want people who are, for religious reasons, opposed to SSM to be legally forced to support it. Unfortunately this is already seen to be the case in the states where SSM has already been granted. SSM can be granted as long as people's beliefs are respected and upheld, so that both can coexist.

If necessary the government should make a marriage between people of the same sex unconstitutional. It should be made Law of the Land to protect our culture and society. I am not anti-homosexual, but against acceptance of same-sex marriage as legitimate (legal).

Then what's the point of the voting process if every time the minority is unhappy, they are going to call "unfair" and challenge it? The majority has made many great choices in the past as well, and the few poor ones doesn't discredit from overall trusting in society. Also, comparing gays trying to get "special rights" to the strife of the black community in the 60's is just an inaccurate comparison. In fact polls have showed that 60% of blacks are against gay marriage, and only 23% support it.

Straight people decided to make marriage a legal term. When you get married the state doesn't give you a license of civil union. They issue a license of MARRIAGE. It is a legally binding contract. And in this country adults are supposed to be able to enter into contract at will. The ONLY reason these people what to 'protect' their precious title is so they can give themselves a bullshit reason to feel like they are morally superior. Talk about an inferiority complex?!?!?

Yes.....the religious groups come out to protest in these situations.......to match the extremism of the gay contingent. But the fact is that it is the 70% of Americans that belong to neither of these extreme groups that are saying NO to gays who wish to hijack the word "marriage". Generally, this 70% could care less about who is with whom or what they do with each other's genitals...............they simply demand respect for their own institutions as well.....namely one called "marriage".

By definiton in Websters, Marriage is a RELIGIOUS institution. It is not a legal right by dictionary definition. When you toss out the priest or pastor, and add a judge, you get a civil union, which, by the way is the LEGAL portion of a marriage. The so called "marriage" that is injected into it is for those who are in some form of church.

There needs to be separation of Church and State. For that many lawmakers that follow a religion, they shouldn't base our laws on THEIR religion.

actually marijuana use does have victims: anyone around when ur smoking it and if u drive while high or w.e bad things are likely to happen. if i remember right(i may be wrong) thats what happened here. girl was goin to a school dance but the driver was high off somethin. driver injured, girl died, little kid injured, and a 21 yr old i think was injured too. smashed right into a tree. as with the rest of what u said i dont see why they would ban any of it
