  • Hahaha hookys going crazy while gillian and barny are like "wtf?"

  • Radiohead's cover looks like a school band playing this song! They're a great band, but no so good to play a New Order cover... sorry!

  • I've got to say, I've listened to all the great guitarists (e.g., Townshend, Clapton, Page, Van Halen, Lifeson, Setzer, etc. ad infinitum) and I believe Barney Summers is one of the most under-rated guitarists of all time. His rhythm guitar arrangements are amazing ...

  • Stop being dickheads and GET BACK TOGEHTHER WE LOVE YOU NEW ORDER!!!

  • A very direct to the point live performance, so far as body doubling, Hohenzoller, and quadrate apetures to female lead networks goes.

  • Did someone unplug Gillian's guitar?

    Can't hear her at all....

  • Stephen Morris: Human metronome. Spiffing :)

  • Best video ever..

  • Ian's version of this song was so bad Bernie had to change some of the lyrics because he couldn't understand what Ian was saying.

  • man, the intro is the feelies song moscow nights. what's this show?

  • great live !!!

  • BARNEY! i love his simple guitar wokr. beauty above speed is what i think . though speed can be beauty.

  • frenetic!!!!!

  • fucking awsome

  • Fricking Awesome video and song..

  • Do you think if i post enough on all their videos they'll reform?

Kiss and make up ya bstrds,we miss you.

  • i know it was a joy division song first. BUT FUCK i don't care about Ian Curtis

  • ian was the leader

  • RIP and all that, he seemed like an interesting guy, but I really think New Order > Joy Division

  • These old (but post-PCL) NO videos...Bernard looks creepily like Sting...

  • messages from the new world order coded in music ?

  • they shouldve hung it up after ian was set free

  • man... this gives me chills...

  • It's funny; I've seen male guitarists wear a dresses at gigs, but never before a woman.

  • The drummer should make one of those fitness videos, look at him go, he probably burns more calories in a song than a jogger in three laps.

  • it was a joy division song...remember that always

  • @Jutesoup woop doop.

  • This is one of my favorite songs of all time. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE.... indescribable feeling. Absolutely hypnotic. Grabs my imagination and soul.

  • Ian Curtis only can sing this song amazing...

  • i remember when i was 13 years old and i popped in substance into my brand new sony discman.....and this song blew me away!.....a fan ever since..im 32 now

  • pretty hot stuff this gitarist playing shirtless!

  • No wonder Barney did that advert for 'Sunkist.'

  • What happennes tongue good old days? Music now is so much different that most of the time they spread anger instead of love. One of the greatest bands during that decade, thank u for the memories

  • whoa... has anyone listened to Kings of Leon california waiting? its a total ripoff of this song!!

  • Much better of a LIVE band NOW!!! The music sounds good!! But I could have sat down and closed my eyes instead of looking at them play!! LIVE at Finsbury Park is AWESOME!!!!

  • I do like raw live music and this is just that.

Bernie has done a great job in his own way over the years and has never even tried to replace Ian in any way.

It was great when after many years they started playing the Joy Division songs again.....superb.

  • I miss Ian....

  • Without Peter Hook New Order is nothing

  • peter chose to leave - he couldn't get on with Bernard - i miss him - but what can we do about it?

  • ouch...

  • sorry :(

  • what?? Radiohead's cover sucked to me.. big ones! (and its not like they could play it live either.. did i just say that?)

i guess it just goes to show the differents tastes of music.. (mainstream, and not so mainstream)

  • seriously? they are pretty much identical, radioheads version is cleaner and tom yorke`s vocals are better then bernards, but as you say its about taste

  • cleaner? have you heard the album? radioheads cover was the one with the rawness and power cpmpared to new order's album version, i thought the album version was way cleaner.. i may need to get my ears checked..

but if your comparing this live song with radioheads cover.. i'd still say New order, but the sound quality is shit..

i dont have it in for radiohead or anything, i love that band.. im not one for covers tho, never will be..

  • @JoeClipso fair enough then, gona make it my mission to find a good cover version you`ll like. jeff buckley hallejuhah?

  • I agree, I wasn't digging Radiohead's cover, it just wasn't doing it for me. This original version is beautiful.

  • Get your ears checked mate seriously, Radiohead's cover was really well done and with respect, nothing was changed, wasn't a pretencious cover at all, and it was well structured, if you want a bad cover check out Killers Shadowplay I still prefer Joy Divisions version of ceremony though

  • @Mygalej Well it isn't a cover is it - it's a COPY. A cover has some form of originality.

  • @Mygalej Agreed. Radiohead's cover was incredibly respectful. There was a lot of love for the original in that performance.

  • I love Radiohead, actually. And the cover was fine. But nothing beats New Order on this one, for me.

  • the best version is the original by Joy Division. New order was ok, but Joy Division was better.

  • well all we have to go by is some crummy recording, I love Joy Division too but they never recorded the song, and New Order did amazing job. give em some credit

  • @MustHaveRocknRoll both versions are by joy divsion, words and music, bernard tried the impossible and made a great effort this was new orders best ever A side and the words were written by ian, in a lonely place was new orders best ever track (7 inch) (again ians words) after that it was steadily downhill but what could you expect ?

  • @birdandthe ya, ik they were basically the same band. Ian was pretty much the best part.

  • @annettecls you're obviously RETAAARDED

  • Amazing song. I love how by '84 they've really made the song a New Order song. Their live performances back in '81, so soon after Ian's death, sort of channel his spirit (and this is exquisitely beautiful), but by this show they've come into their own.

  • Amazing

  • Yes it's the most powerful and loudest rendition of this number by New Order I've come across on YT. And to be honest it's my favorite song by them followed closely by the original 12 inch version of "Temptation".

  • Bear in mind that gig was in 2002, 22 years after he started singing and playing instruments.... this was in 1984. And remember Gillian was recruited to the band cause Barney couldn't sing/play two instruments at once

  • Um, their debut album was not Substance. It was Movement, 1981. And this was not on it. This was their first single as New Order, after Ian killed himself.

  • Wow this fails...... (or at least, the stuff after the French part does)

  • First of, New Order's debut album was Movement, released in 1981 only one year and a few months after the demise of Joy Division. Second, the song was written by Joy Division and the lyrics by Ian Curtis, the band's lead singer.

  • god damn amazing

  • fucking great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ceromony in my humble opinion the best song ever never sounded better.folks..

  • loud & Proud awsome!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is one of my favorite new order songs but i can't imagine how much better it would have been with ian singing on a proper record.

  • On some early stuff Barney used a double cutway les paul so that's why he said that

BTW: RIP Les Paul and IAN

  • better known as a gibson SG, I think? yeah, RIP Les Paul.

  • @nfiles not always. That's an original double cutaway Les Paul. Not an SG

  • wow- that might be the best ive heard them live-

  • Best New Order song EVER !!

Barney on his Les Paul and great to see Gillian upfront strummin' along too !!

  • That's not a Les Paul Barney's playing. It's a Gibson ES-335.

  • Oh well- WRGAF..I just recall Barney at a gig once saying that his Les Paul was perfect for playing 'Ceremony' so I just assumed that's what it was.

  • I have never seen Barney with a Les Paul.

  • IAN CURTIS

  • Good god Barney is buff in this one

  • Who? You mean that purple dinosaur?

  • fucking excellent.................

  • peter hook is possibly the most under rated over looked musician ever-incredible

  • Funny how a band will have a perfect tune and then play it too fast live...

  • Best live version of the song I've ever heard.

  • For real.

  • My comment was directed at EmotionBleuPetrole by the way.

  • yeah i agree with this guy smoothcriminal2121, but its new order!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wtf the crowd is standing around like fucking zombies...they never heard of dancing? i would go fuckin crazy if i was been there...

  • .. and jump around like a crazy freak :-D

  • AGREED

  • Wtf dude, he's free to do as he wants. I understand where your coming from but perhaps he was just hot..... or pissed, or both. Peace.

  • This is the ONLY time he's topless so I presume it was extremely hot or something. It's not like he always does that and beside, pop stars don't play topless either. Do you ever see Justin Timberlake go topless?

  • All cool people lurv to get naked, get with the programme poindexter.

  • I saw both Barney and Pete Hook topless at Roskilde '86.

Gillian wasn't exactly topless of course, but she spent quite a lot of time looking scared at the crowds in the mud pools.

They played both Ceremony and Love Will Tear us Apart at that concert.

First tie I saw them playing a Joy Division song, apart from Ceremony.

  • Ok so they went topless twice. Again, it's not like they do that all the time, just once or twice in a blue moon, big deal right?

  • Yeah, it was a big deal right.

In 84 NO, and Barney in particular, had quite a rep for being everything from bothersome, "introvert" to hostile at concerts.

When I saw them in at Saga, a small venue in Copenhagen, '84, Barney seemed to have an endless fight with the crew and his own guitars!

Nevertheless, this only seemed to sharpen his performance to very intensive moments.

So, it was a surprise to see both Barney and Hooksie topless AND dancing at Roskilde '86.

  • peter hook ist great =)

  • Dude, take it easy with the name calling. I'm not hating on Barney's skills. He's one of my favorite guitar players and singers. But this is a statement Barney himself has made several times. It's the reason Gillian was brought into the band. You'll notice that live he plays more on the parts where he doesn't sing, especially on "Ceremony." Or watch "The Perfect Kiss" video. Also, read the liner notes to the Retro boxset. He talks more than once about his difficulties singing and playing

  • great!!!!!! i mean if curtis stills alive its because of this soundband, that sound it remains to joy division even if i dont ever born in that time!!!!!! rules!!!! CURTIS WE ARE HERE TNX A LOL FOR U MUSIC... RIP

  • joy division still

  • Gillian is a great musician.

Barney is a great guitar player, even if he doesn't always show it live. He has a hard time singing and playing at the same time.

  • i mean radioheads cover is great but listen to this song from the beginning its friggin gold from the intro a cover is good but the original is excellent

  • Whats the song at the start? (for the first 23 seconds?)

  • Hi i think it must be Moscow Night from The Feelies

    Album Crazy Rhythms

  • Yeh m8 it is thanks a bunch top tune it is too

  • It's odd, I love Joy Division, a huge Joy Division fan but I don't listen to New Order, even though their practically the same band in a sense, the Joy Division sound was....the Joy Division sound and it might have died along with Ian Curtis, "may you find peace"

  • cool shit

  • great

  • loooooooooove them

  • Barney ur a guitar god. Miss u Ian..

  • Ur probably joking? Thought so. If u listen to JD's music u'll realize that Barney is a guitar God.

  • Yes Bernard has a minimalist style that sounds like no other, and I think it has a real beauty to it. This song is a perfect example.

  • Man you know nothing. What she plays is just backup. You think whatever she strums he can't do the same and better? You're also forgetting a very importing thing: that excellent guitar music comes from Barney's creative head, not hers. Don't get me wrong, Gillian contributed a lot on the keyboard, but when it comes to guitar, it's Barney's domain.

  • ok ceromy had this cd loved it some time later i still love it but ami prepared to make it make me feel a little bit oh i do beleive in other lives but not dead and re in carted just a little older but still loving it

  • Barney what happened to ur shirt?

  • OMG i love that song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dadafari - New order is GOD. How dare you call them Amateur....

  • It's called sarcasm. But it's also justified.

In JD, only Steven Morris on drums would qualify as playing with serious competency. Didn't matter. NO was brand new to tooling with sequencing and loops when they put together their earliest recordings. Didn't matter.

    The punk-esque simplicity.

Did you happen to notice the smiley face after the comment? It was a joke, dummy. Ceremony is prolly my favorite song, period. NO/JD prolly have 5 or 6 of my top 20.

  • um where the hell's his shirt! new order would be the last band i'd expect to have a shirtless guitarist!

he aint no Ian Curtis, poor lad. New Order seems to be a band with the least amount of personality EVAR.

One good album and then a slew of awesome singles, they became the dance hit band. Catchy tunes, but albums they really didn't construct. Hell they were ahead of their time doing 12"s only...

  • best song ever written in the 20th century

  • R U fucking insane? or R U high? How can Usay bunch of amatures? JD Rocked the world, still does up to this day. Go sniff something..

  • Insane? Sure,. maybe.

    High? Nope. Not in years.

Able to recognize sarcasm? Better than you, obviously.

Look below for further explanation. You're not the only dummy.

  • only Ian Curti's could have written something like this

  • Barney actually wrote a lot of the lyrics to this song (according to New Order Story DVD).

  • I think ian wrote the lyrics but didn't have them on paper. Barney had to pull out a Graphic EQ and try to figure out what Ian was singing, and what ever he could not decipher he wrote himself. Hell maybe he couldn't decipher anything and rewrote the whole song!! jj

not trying to come down on you but i read it in wikipedia and saw it on the New Order story.

on yeah he also had do the same thing with in a lonely Place.

  • That was what i meant but maybe express it a bit simple :)

but lucky me - you came for my rescue and explained it better!

  • I never get tired of this song.

    Just utterly brilliant.

  • timeless

  • Ah, takes me back. Thanks for posting this.

  • they just dont make music like this anymore...not a lot of people except the true fans on here posting know about New Order, after all you guys are the ones still watching their videos 20+ years later...these guys are LEGENDS and belong in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame

  • There's lots of good music these days. It's not as if there wasn't any bad music in the seventies and eighties.

  • Somebody show this to radiohead, how to properly play a fucking song. Great performance all around.

  • my favourite performance of ceremony

  • Me too! The sound quality is great & i love the lighting

  • Radiohead were kind of goofing around with the ceremony cover, not really taking it seriously. I love both N.O. and Radiohead the same. Substance and Ok Computer are both outstanding pieces of art.

  • This is how ceremony should be performed, not the slop that was the radio head cover.

  • I liked both.

  • I liked seeing Radiohead cover this and the Smiths song. The Smiths albums and singles have always been and still are on regular rotation for me because I like the songs and they are still good. If my band wanted to cover their songs I would be happy to play and sing songs that I have always liked at full volume having a good time. I think that is what Radiohead was doing, paying tribute, and they did it well. Being snobby about it is missing the point.

  • Interesting. Though I read that Gillian played guitar too, I think it's the first time I've seen a clip of her doing so.

  • I don't think I have ever come across anyone who is a 'New Order' fan and dosen't like 'Joy Division'. I really can't believe what I have read on this page, it is most upsetting to think there are people out there who don't realise they are the same band and there music is equally as significant no matter if it's attributed to Joy Division OR New Order. Ian was the one who took Kraftwerk records to band practice, I thought everyone knew that!

  • people want to hang on to the darkness of joy division and N.O to the mdoesnt add up it is odd but they watched there front man destroy himself they couldnt stay on that path so the ydid the last two songs and let it be every one else should do the same i dont like everything N.O does but their still awesome..

  • Nooo they must all be filthy philistines not like you and your uber-cool mates who all went to school with Ian Curtis and liked Joy Division when they were playing with pencils on pots. How dare they wear a T-Shirt that only approved people should wear. What preeeeeeetentious, schoolboy tripe.....

  • closer is probably the most sad thing i ever heard in my life. Literrally you can hear the decent. Its easy to say now in hindsight that you could see it coming. But if you take the lyrics and see them in print. Its amazing. I never seen pain articulated so wonderfully. Maybe im talkin shit who knows. Also im sorry to say to some NME writers unknown pleasures doesnt compare to closer. Even listening to joy divisions ceremony makes you realised they would of headed for greatness even if ian lived

  • haha i thought that opening thing was the song, i was like what the hell

  • "who gives a fuck about if. Ian C topped himself" do you really think the members of New Order would agree with you? Put that in a letter to them and see if they reply! Both were great bands; a real fan would not critisize one or the other, or the dead.Don't reply I have no interest in anything else you have to say

  • you cannot compare NO to JD ... JD made 2 albums that are widely recognized masterpieces !

  • they are the best guys and yes because they do so many music styles- how can you class them??? they are house/techno/ rock/ pop. you cant stop thinking about their songs- no 1

  • lol wow they play it much faster in live performances

  • this sounds awesome!!

  • I am old enough to remember this played live at the Hacienda (44 now if you must know), emotion and energy were off the scale.

  • oh indeed

  • this kind of music is so dangerous. I havn't been able to sleep, I've listened to it back to back today, 50 + times. Beautiful but deadly.

  • on the recorded version ive heard the first chorus is different to the second chorus, but here (and other live videos ive seen) he sings the first chorus the same as the second chorus, as in "avenues all lined with trees" as opposed to "watching her, these things she said"... any1 got any sort of explanation?

  • because barney has always had problems remembering lyrics, is my guess

    pre autocue days!

  • fair enuf, thort it was probably tht!

haven now watched a fair few live videos 4 different songs, he tends 2 get verses etc mixed up! lol

  • barney?

  • barney loves his pernod

  • i was born exactly 6 years after this =]

  • any1 else notice tht he got th words wrong?

he sang th second chorus the first time round as well as the second time round

  • nice

a drunken bernard and when they getting their punkroots alive it sounds as great as this

  • One of my favorite songs ever.... radiohead played a wicked good cover of this
