@Plisken1986 even though American philosophy works off of practicality and logic. Of course i am referring to the famous American philosophers we have. Most Americans go against practicality and logic
@Plisken1986 buddy its not that i hate logic, i understand its logical, it just doenst look right at all to me, i guess its cause im american and i like a performance car looking like a car, not like my aunts hatchback
haha... you're welcome, buddy =) well actually, the subie has better performance and the looks are much better than the evo x. but i wish that the upcoming sti would be a 4-door sedan, not the hatchback. but still, hatchback are much more rigid =)
people says its an ugly car,but i think its real nice, and evo fanboys say this is crap and i think that is some big bullshit,to me personaly this new subaru beats the new evo by a long shot
I totally agree with you man...having test drivin both I thought that the Subaru was much better rounded than the Evo, not to mention having alot nicer interior and seats that don't have hard plastic bolsters in them with fake carbon fiber inlays...
i just love this car, a lot of people say it's ugly, but man does it really perform well!! I hope the 2010+ versions have already fixed the issue on the ringland and ecu problems in the car.
And i actually like the wagon/hatchback version better than the sedan. The sedan looks too much like an economy car you could find at your local hertz rental lot. The hatch just looks more versatile.
damn. as far as i remember, the 06-07 sti did 0-60 in 5.4 secs, 1/4 mile in 13.93 secs, 60-0 in 114ft, slalom 68mph, and 0.87G grip. This new STi shitted on the older one. but i still love the 07, the 08 is not quite there as of terms of looks. i dont like the hatchback style as much as the sedan
actually these tests are pretty under rated. the older version STis did 0-60 in around the same time as the new ones about 4.6 seconds. the 1/4 mile was about 13.3. but the new STis are still bad ass.
well that all depends on the class. there are more hatchback rally cars out there than most people think. infact that is the reason subaru went with the hatchback design :)
well one of the reasons was that when there was the sedan version for years ppl were complaining saying that wasnt any hatchback versions of the Impreza, Impreza WRX, or STi. Now that they've finally made a hatchback version ppl are now complaining of the fact that there isnt an STi sedan. So whats the other reasons?
I think they just don't like the idea of a station wagon. Maybe if they just made a hatchback coupe like its rally cousins the fiesta or focus less people would be complaining.
I bought a black 08 sti in April, its got Turbo back exhaust, stage 2 tune, and intake. Love the car although the steering was a bit numb and the suspension was a bit wallowey at high speeds. How ever some Megan racing coil overs took care of that. Over all Its such a sick car and very happy with it
If you like sliding/drifting, the older ones are more to your liking compared to this new one... The new STi has a different rear suspension setup that makes the tail-end of the car grip really well unless you force it using lift-off oversteer. However if you really like sliding around, might as well get a RWD car like a 240SX, instead of using an AWD platform...
Its faster and better and greater handling but it has lost the 2 things that I always liked about imprezas. The looks, and the sound of the that typical boxer engine
actually they dont sound like that because its a boxer engine. they sound like that because they have unequal length headers. if you would put equal length headers on one (which are available) they would sound nothing like the subarus we are used to (i rock an 04 STI)
i know bro, what i was saying was that 06s and 08s hae the same engine tone, but when you put equal length headers it makes a boxer sound like a honda
Also about the engine displacement, it may differ from the engine size, for example Audi Coupe (old model) has 4cil AWD which is mounted sideways, but the same car with 2.8 V6 has RWD-like mounted engine.
yeah its hideous, makes the last gen look decent, and I hated that model too. Its a shame the design isnt near the level of performance. Wake up subaru!
umm do the logic. everything is 9 years old. computer all tht shit would need to change. i mean my mate dropped an engine in to a 98 gtb wagon. parts from a 98 and 92. atm is having problems. so what do you think doing what your proposing is going to do. also seems the 99 engine has extra 30nm torque. also prob more flexible with what you can do to a 99 with the less amount of computer interference and urgency too meet environment standards etc
Nice, but I'm not use to 4 cylinder or turbo cars, always a big v8. Could someone tell me how long the engines last before they need a rebuild and how reliable they are ? I usually get at least 250,000 miles out of any v8 engine. I see that these little turbo cars get like 20mpg, so I'm thinking about getting one to drive daily and not have to worry about the turbo or too much boost pressure (I drive fast!).
hmmmm. well turbos are generally reliable. dont thrash it from cold you wont fuck the seals. dont put a boost tap etc on it (increases the boost the wrong way). not as torquey as v8s but alot more usuable horsepower. even though my mates gtb legacy isnt fully tuned yet. still provides amazing acceleration from a 2litre twin turbo. 0-100kmh (60mph) 6seconds. boost pressure stays the same through out the boost range generally. stock they only run 10psi. not much but enough boost to have fun.
rebuilds. dont really have to worry about them. japanese cars are generally reliable as fuck. what about a honda? 2003 civic typeR are fucking quick for a 2litre engine. 220hp at the front wheels. this way no worrying about turbos fucking out and you wont need a rebuild. just regular servicing as well. pretty easy to work on. also parts are easy to come by..well in NZ anyways. dont be fooled by small engines. they can put out alot of hp for the size. what about european diesels?
oooohhhh i said the d word. but search for 120d on here. 2litre powerplant producing 202hp (i think) and a shit load of torque 350nm i think. which for a donk of that size is pretty impressive. 0-60mph 7.2 seconds. also meets all environment standards etc. bloody good cars too.
I'm kinda looking for a turbo 4 with rear wheel drive, at least 250 hp/ 280lb torque and no turbo lag. I think volvos use to be rear wheel drive, but have now moved to the front wheel. I don't really like all wheel drive either, because when not needed, 100% of the power is being sent to the front wheels and the engine is mounted sideways under the hood. I don't mind getting an older car to get rear wheel drive, as long as its dependable and powerful.
Could I ask why do you want a RWD 4cil turbo with specific power output? What do you have against naturally aspirated/different number of cylinders/FWD/AWD/engine mounted sideways?
well, I like rwd because it has better handling and lacks torque steer(awd in most cars have sideways engines, which means most power is sent to the front wheels.) I really just want a good combination of fuel economy and power, as long as it is powerful enough to get from 0-60 in at least 6 sec, its good. As for fuel economy, I'm looking for about 20mpg (much better than the 10-12 mpg I get now from my v8). It will be a daily driver, because I can't afford paying $150 per tank for my truck.
The STi has a Selectable Center Differential that distributes power from Front to Rear between an even 50/50 Lock to a rear biased 35/65 Front/Rear. The car is a Homologation Special for P-WRC and WRC so it needs to stay AWD. The EJ257 in the STi is not a "sideways" engine. It is a Boxer with the tranny/driveshaft protruding straight through it (like RWD) instead of from the side like other AWD platforms based on "sideways" I4 FWDs like the Evo. Oh, and RWD does not always equal better handling.
anyway, put a next gen twin-clutch manumatic on it and get rid of the body-roll and understear, and I'd buy it before anything else. But not a minute before then.
The more you look at this car, the more you love it! I would rather have this thing then the GT500 KR they recently tested. This Subaru is KR for the price!
I would get a GTI or even a Masdaspeed 3 before this car. It looks fine but seems to push pretty hard; its lost to the EVO in every heads up battle Ive seen.
Why compare the GTI and MS3 to the STi? They're not in the same price range as the STi, and if you didn't like the latter that much, why would you think about even buying it if you would go for the cheaper, lesser cars?
Apples to apples, please.
I could understand if you said you prefer the Evo over the STi based on what you've seen.
What I am saying is, the Sti is no better than the 'lesser' cars. In my eye, an 'apples to apples' comparo that included the evo would not include the new Sti. Maybe the old Sti, but not the new one.
The old Sub had its driving dynamic flaws, which were minor in the end. The new one seem to me to emphasize those flaws instead of correcting them. Its not that I prefer the Evo so much. Its just that I am dissapointed in the new Sti's performance.
if the sti is inferior as you say then why has it beaten the MR and GSR at Best Motoring's Tsukuba in more than one ocassion? and can't forget about subie lapping faster than the evo at Top Gear's test track.
thats sad cuz guess what your stats are wrong and you forgot to factor in the costs of these SUVs:
0-60 on a $50,000 BMW X5 with a 350hp V8 is 6.4 seconds... SLOW.
0-60 on a $100,000+ Porsche Cayenne with 521hp V8 is 4.8 seconds... It better be fast if it has that much hp on the car. It would be a disappointment if it didn't.
The STi starts at around $35k for a base model. $15k less than the BMW, and $65k less than the Porsche. If the STi had 521hp on tap, it would do 0-60 below 3 seconds.
with a few mods and those number will improve :)
