I have. 750ml bottle, I will be trying it for the first this weekend, I Also have a smaller bottle of it and a Rochefort 10 I will be cellaring, great review can't wait to try it.
I have a 750ml bottle of this in the fridge. I'm going to save it until April 30th and drink it while I watch UFC 129. I usually think Belgians are overrated but I'm starting to try more, I find myself focusing more on the taste from the yeast the more I get into beer, hefeweizen yeast, farmhouse ales, bier de gardes, etc. The yeast is key. Good review man.
I've tasted Wesvletern 12 and St. Bernardus Abt 12 side by side (both fresh) and can honestly say that they're VERY dissimilar (yet similar).
HOWEVER; Lay down that St. Bernardus for 2, 3, 4 or 5 years and taste it next to a fresh (and when I say fresh, I mean in the hotel after the ride home from the Abbey, directly from the crate) Westvletern 12, you may be hard pressed to find a difference, and if you do find one, you'll likely enjoy the St. Bernardus more!
@TheAlmightyFSM I loved this bottle of St. Bernardus. I've got a 2-year old bottle of Westy that I'm planning on doing as a Christmas review. I'd love to get to Belgium and try them both fresh sometime, but that's likely to be a distant dream for me for a good while.
@TheEndosymbiosis The 12 is better with some age on it anyhow. The best Westy I ever drank was a 5 year old bottle that I got in Amsterdam (for 23 euros, yikes).
Belgium is a beautiful country to drive through, and being able to drink several 12's back to back is very liberating, but it's not absolutely necessary to get the full experience of the beer.
Just have your glass ready and don't tilt the goblet when you pour, that's my only advice, the reasons can go unsaid I think, haha.
having had both beers I'd say the differences between this and Westy 12 are night and day. The only way to truly match them up would be to drink both beers of the same vintage. Either drink both fresh or both with the same amount of cellaring time.
You don't need a coaster for a footed glass because the foot doesn't sweat, only the bowl part sweats (and beers don't tend to sweat much in the winter anyway) lol ;)
This is a B+ for me, but I can see why some would rate it higher. Good review!
@fcuk90001 I'll be more than happy to review it if I get it but I don't believe it's available in my area, unfortunately. I'll be on the lookout. Cheers.
Glad to see you get so excited over this, you even laid out the "F" bomb...lol..
I had this when I returned home from my first deployment at a time when I really didn't have the palate for complex beers that I do now, but I remember that it was definitely like no other beer that I had ever had at that point, would love to try again if I ever am so lucky.
@fcuk90001 It is indeed. I discovered when I was going through my cellar that I had an aged 11.2 oz bottle, so that was a definite "score" moment as well.
Besides Karmeliet this is a beer a drink every week atleast once, being Belgian sometimes has its benefits

@iRLadyKi113r It's in my top-five favorites ever. I keep wanting to buy another bottle but I seem to always have review stuff to buy instead.

@TheAlmightyFSM Thanks. I'll probably shoot the Westy review tomorrow and put it up on Christmas. I'll take your advice. Cheers!

@ChadzBeerReviews I used the coaster out of habit. I keep it there next to where I shoot the reviews and don't even think about it.
This is an amazing beer. Sorry you don't like it as much as I do, but you don't tend to like too many Belgians anyway.

@TheEndosymbiosis He also doesn't know the difference between a Lambic and wine cooler, but that's beside the point.

Can you review St Bernardus x-mas ale if you can get it?

@monkeycaveman I lay a few F-bombs every now and then in the vids, when circumstances warrant it.
I first reviewed this back in 2006, so my palate was much less refined. Definitely better now that I've had it a few times.

One of these days I need to harvest some yeast from a bottle. Maybe next time I get a Westy 12.
The skype session after you had this was hilarious, even more enthusiasm than this review.
I bought a bottle of their Christmas beer but I need to pick up another Abt. 12.
StumpyJoeJr 1 year ago
@StumpyJoeJr Yeah, I wasn't even feeling up to trying to harvest yeast. I could do it with the Westy, but I'd hate to waste even a mL of Westy 12....
That skype session was hilarious on all sides, I think. We should do that more often.

Great review Dan, I have had this I feel the same way. Nice Quake reference at the start of the vid!

@Tantrum777 Thanks. I'm just glad at least one person got the joke. I played Quake obsessively when I was in high school.
Cheers!
