This picture was terribly underrated. The attention paid to detail in the obviously expensive sets and futuristic design is outstanding.I wonder why on Earth they chose not to use color film? This film is definitely ahead of its time. Not even today's sci-fi can compare to the ingenious and creative sets used in the picture.Superb.
@internationalgiant1 I agree with you, the special and attention to details from this industry beats the crap out of a lot of early 60's american film about space
I have the bootleg DVD of the AIP version I purchased on eBay. It is not widescreen either. I wonder why? I know there was the original Czeck version out there under "Ikarie XB-1" but the region code will not play in the U.S. with a standard DVD player. Why don't they release the theatrical widescreen version remastered in the United States? This is true art. and way ahead of its time.
It's not surprising that the names were changed. Try to understand the perception of the Eastern Bloc countries in the early 60's. American International simply could not have distributed this film successfully in 1963 without obscuring it's origin. It seems unfair, today, but it was a different world, back then. Our countries were NOT on friendly terms, and any Soviet ally country was considered to be absolutely evil. All products from those countries were almost forbidden.
Dont blame all of us US citizens for what one stupid film distributor did. I find it shocking that they changed the names. I wont even watch a movie that has dubbed over voices. I watch it in the original language.
director of the film is Jindřich Polák not some fucking Jack Pollack, respec what you must. Jack Nicolson is not Jindřich Nykolsyn or Tom Hanks is not Tomáš Četníků as well you fucking US idiots
what the fuck, its the Czech film of the authors and i cannot see any name of original authors and actors in pretitles, just typical US style - to stole everything amazing made outside ot the US something like the states...

@diesixdie It seems that you goverment was the same EVIL as ours :-) MUHEHEHEHEHE
Just change "Eastern" for "Western", "Soviet" for "USA".
There is one exception. In Eastern block there were no "obscuring it's origin" films...

@kokotacz - I would say that our governments were more similar than they were different.
