The original version, Tanz is stunning from beginning to end. What on earth happened?! I hope they'll bring it back under the Tanz title. But I do like Angel's Arise and their dance but still a messy beginning to a very sloppy production.
I've said this somewhere else before...but I can only imagine what any fans of the original, proper Austrian show must have thought after seeing this opening scene! :-P
Michael Crawford must have been going through some kind of late-mid-life crisis. I'm just surprised that he didn't want to fly onto the stage while shooting laser beams from his eyes and breathing fire.
Coming from the point of view of a professional musician... love the three part harmony between the girls. This would be great to do with a women's choir. But I might see if I can track down the original German first to do a comparison, since I haven't heard this one in German yet.

The producers decided the story was too dark for American audiences and would have limited appeal (read: MONEY), so they had the book rewritten to a more Disneyesque tale and hired Crawford to exploit his Phantom triumph.Then came 911 and folks wanted escapist theater, not to be challenged. It was all downhill from there. Like the saying goes, "success has a thousand fathers but failure is a bastard." Everyone ran away from the blame.

What do you think about a show like Dance of the Vampires a few months after you've seen it? I think, you only remember a funny show and some jokes (that's what I remember from the YT videos of the musical)

I feel so sorry for you guys over there in America... I hope will create a better English version so that you can get the chance to see the REAL Tanz der Vampire.

This is an oversimplification, but the typical American musical theater-goer just wants to be entertained, not challenged. It was all downhill from there as it degenerated into farce. Timing was also an issue, it was to open in the wake of 9/11 when we were not in the mood for heavy drama. I doubt the show would find an audience here, so just release it on dvd.
@audiesgirl So, that's typical American, isn't it? Happy endings, the "funny bad guy", just entertainment, no deeper meaning... I often ask myself why entertainment can't be something to think about at the same time (generally, not only in America).
When I went to the theater to see Tanz der Vampire, I didn't want to see a challenging, heavy drama but a show to enjoy myself and (a few days after) start to think about the background/meaning etc.

To recoup the costs, it nees to go on tour and sell merchandise (t-shirts, mugs, hats, etc.), sell movie rights/dvds You can blame high unionized labor costs but that's another story that affects the Metropolitan Opera, too. We don't like govt. subsidizing entertainment like Europe does. So, shows get watered down to appeal to the widest popular audiences.
the best version of this is "dans der vampieren" that's the flemisch version that was so good it was with hans peter janssens he is a belg but he playing in the musical les miserables in west end as only person the two big roles sow you now thats was amazing

The story was indeed lost in translation. Going back to the movie's light comedy didn't work.Perhaps if they'd produced it first in England, it would have been more faithful to the German version which is amazing theater. With some tweeking for American sensibilities, it would have been a huge hit here, too. Hope they give it another try.

I'm a big Steinman fan, but this fucking mess of an opening is his fault. Angels Arise into God Has Left The Building is his desperate attempt to try and shoehorn his Neverland vision into Tanz. He tries to make Sarah into Wendy, then the dance scene attempts to mutate the lost boys into vampires, and, finally, Krolock is moulded into Peter trying to seduce Wendy away. And it fucking sucks.

@Actorblondie Not quite, when the show moved to Germany, they added a new song for Sarah, cut the surreal ballet scene, shortened some transitional music and edited verses in various songs, for example, the reprise of "Knoblauch" has been cut in half to pick up the pace. All the changes (and a few others) were later utilized in the 2009 Vienna revival as well.
This new version was so unnecessary. Why make a comedy out of the austrian/german version? Especially there are funny moments in the original. No wonder that flopped. Maybe you will get a proper adaption one day. I'm pretty sure that that will be more successfully

Why such a different intro? Why not stick to the original one, it was perfectly fine. This is silly and ruins the beginning. It's as though they want to take all the subtlety out of the plot and throw it in your face right at the beginning so that everyone would surely get it. The song is kind of awful as well.

The overture isn't bad. But then it quickly goes downhill from there. The vampires dancing looks like a bad imitation of Michael Jackson's Thriller. And the dialogue is sooo bad. "1880-something"?! Did anybody actually find that funny??

I feel sorry for all the talented actors who seemed to be doing their very best with what they got.
However, the producers who decided to "dumb down" such an amazing musical for Broadway audiences deserve to go straight to the seventh circle of hell!
I sure hope that the continued success of Tanz Der Vampires in Europe and Asia means that a FAITHFUL English version will finally be brought to us all one day!

I remember almost seeing this on Broadway...I picked re-seeing Phantom of the Opera instead and I'm glad...this looks terrible...though I wanted to see Michael Crawford as a vampire.
I hate to be brutial to this cause I love michael to death and for some reason I enjoy this O_O but imagine him dressed as a cheesy dracula for halloween, and random stuff (that is to long to list right now) raping your brain and then odo from ds9 thrown in for shits and giggles. now this could have been a lot better then it was. it has moments when it is perfections and then ... the bs plot comes back or something O_O I am planing on reviewing it.

@HappyMadisonDude Theoretically it´s the same, but they changed it and rewrote nearly the whole musical, so it´s more a parody than a musical ... the original austrian version of Tanz der Vampire was so breathtaking, and to watch such a piece of shit really hurts ... it has nothing to do with the original musical, it´s not even funny

@Actorblondie Not quite, when the show moved to Germany, they added a new song for Sarah, cut the surreal ballet scene, shortened some transitional music and edited verses in various songs, for example, the reprise of "Knoblauch" has been cut in half to pick up the pace. All the changes (and a few others) were later utilized in the 2009 Vienna revival as well.

the whole thing looks like the demise of an excellent screenplay and a somewhat decent musical. i do like the staging of the ouverture though.

Why such a different intro? Why not stick to the original one, it was perfectly fine. This is silly and ruins the beginning. It's as though they want to take all the subtlety out of the plot and throw it in your face right at the beginning so that everyone would surely get it. The song is kind of awful as well.

i am really a big fan., but this is really shit. why adapting so much? stick to the original like whole europe did. this intro is totaly unnessecary, how is it developing the plot? i saw every part of both english and german, and i think the german one is much better in lyrics and plot. (normaly the english version is better, i am really disapointed!)

The overture isn't bad. But then it quickly goes downhill from there. The vampires dancing looks like a bad imitation of Michael Jackson's Thriller. And the dialogue is sooo bad. "1880-something"?! Did anybody actually find that funny??

I feel sorry for all the talented actors who seemed to be doing their very best with what they got.
However, the producers who decided to "dumb down" such an amazing musical for Broadway audiences deserve to go straight to the seventh circle of hell!
I sure hope that the continued success of Tanz Der Vampires in Europe and Asia means that a FAITHFUL English version will finally be brought to us all one day!

I hate to be brutial to this cause I love michael to death and for some reason I enjoy this O_O but imagine him dressed as a cheesy dracula for halloween, and random stuff (that is to long to list right now) raping your brain and then odo from ds9 thrown in for shits and giggles. now this could have been a lot better then it was. it has moments when it is perfections and then ... the bs plot comes back or something O_O I am planing on reviewing it.

So am I it is ok. Funny thing the german one made more sence and it is in another langue. This was is trying to take something phantomy and turn it into a comedy witch doesn't really work to well. But it is sapost to be about vampires and this one wants this chick and something I really don't know. It never really made to much sence to me to begin with. All I know is this one is on mushrooms and Michael crawford is in it. And people are laughing at stuff that isn't really funny.

I think it's a weird beginning. The dancing of this vampires (?) was good, but it didn't really fit in there. But what was the thing about the mushrooms? I didn't get that. And who was the man in the end supposed to be? Count von Krolock? How does it go on in this version?
