It was because of Hitlers "Blizt krieg".(flash war). When it was introduced it was a new way of fighting. Striking hard, fast and unexpectedly to avoid stopping. Russia had a lot of land to go on. And the only thing that held the Germans from capturing the capital was(funnily enough) a rain weather that turned the roads into mud.
The flash war is what took the french and several other nations so fast.
The red army managed to fight well after some different things happened to the German campain.
