I wonder if Fry has ever looked at dreamcatcher studies, or done them himself, to make an informed decision that it was "horse$#!+", or whether he just randomly decided it was without any evidence whatsoever. He certainly gave no evidence to back up his opinion!
If you believe in nothing, you'll believe in anything.
This is a little bit iff key but if explained will be a viable argument.
People who are athiests (i am one myself so don thtink of me as an athiest hater). Still believe in something. No deity, god or spiritual being but we do have beliefs in ideals, protocol, society, morals etc etc. I think Stephen refers to people who believe in nothing what so ever.
I think you misunderstood what he meant by "nothing." He wasn't saying atheists don't believe in ANYTHING, just things of a metaphysical nature. Astrology, feng shui, new age "energies," anything which requires a belief without evidence.
Um... well, no disagreement here =P New Age rubbish is just as stupid as religion, I just wanted to make it clear that I think the whole "atheists believe in nothing, so they'll believe in everything" line is as dumb as it is false, since I've had it thrown at me ad nauseaum. I don't think Mr. Fry was referring to atheists either, he just borrowed the phrase. n_n
Kind of a bittersweet experience for me. I was loving it until he quoted Chesterton's asinine line. As a naturalist, I hate it when people throw that idiotic "if you believe in nothing, you'll believe anything" at atheist. *sighs* Anyways, thanks for the clip, I wish I could see the entire 101s where he's appeared. ^-^
He hasn't and he won't. He said he would never appear on HIGNFY again after they sacked Angus. He described it as "greasy, miserable, British and pathetic"
