You can't beat vinyl. What i love about records is not only is the record in a sleeve with enough room for some amazing art work but that the music is physically in the vinyl, actually pressed into it, I mean it's there, in the grooves! Analogue is far far superior to digital.Vinyl isn't more expensive to produce, it's just that plastic CD's are cheaper, so now markets have goten people to associate the word Analogue with something old and out of fashion and thats not 'cool' to todays genaration!
Thank you for keeping my favorite kind of store alive. There is nothing like shopping for records and I just wish that there were more vinyl shops in the Boston area. A lot of the shops of the past 35 years are gone. There are some left but not much. Anyways, thanks for all the info on vinyl collecting as well.
@djskizmarkey There are a few good ones around here. Check out the Newbury Comics Norwood location for vinyl. They have a vinyl section that will take you back to shopping in record stores before the compact disc was invented. Also check out Looney Tunes across from Berkeley School of Music, In Your Ear Records in Harvard Square and a location across from The Paradise on Comm Ave. Do a Google search for used record stores in Boston and you will find vinyl. Good Luck
We have just made our own auction vinyl record website, if you like vinyl please check us out. You can also use our very own bulklister to easily transfer csv files and even import from turbolister, even have a buy it now for 60 days option at no extra cost, cheapest rates on the net, just go to blog and click on the link.
Other formats have come and gone but vinyl is still about.
I would attribute this to the fact that about 80% of all music ever released is still only availiable on vinyl and as long as you have people who are into music a little more than the top 40 then there will be a market for records.
I always thought that one day all the systems that download music will crash and all the servers will die in a virus. This will never happen to vinyl records! Go vinyl! I have been collecting since I was 11 and have learned so much by collecting records. There is so much out there on vinyl that is hard to find in any digital form. The quality of vinyl is so much better too, no bit rates, no frequency limit! Play vinyl and check out my channel for some cool records!
Does anyone from san antonio remember apple records that was on San Pedro? Is it still there. Been gone a long time. Can't wait to get back and check this guys shop out. Did this guy have a set-up at the Eisenhower Flea Market? Long live vinyl.
Ok i love vinyl but i listen to all formats, vinyl, cd, ipod, 8-tracks on occasion, am radio, satelitte radio, and so on and so on....but yes VINYL is king!
Hey, I've been here! It's Alamo Records in San Antonio, TX. Mr. Day shared some of these same observations with me while I was perusing his inventory. He's a nice guy with a one-of-a-kind collection--vinyl intermingled with toys!
Vinyl will never be gathered up to betamax land. Never! CDs get scratched should one so much as breath on them. So far, not one of my vinyls has a single jump.
@lewisldurham They also make excellent coasters, lol. Snapping them in half for the heck of it is fun too. I grew up with vinyl and cassettes and remember when the day came that I started buying everything in my collection in CD format. I shouldn't have bothered. What a waste of a small fortune that was. Now I never play them, they just collect dust.
Beware of new vinyl re-issues, some cutting houses uses digital conversions in the spacing process, which makes the album like a CD printed on vinyl = mojo gone. Spread the awareness of it, I think it is a fraudulent practice because that info isn´t stated on the product.
just check my first purchase and it's dated 30 years ago.how times flies.i collect a lot of jazz, contemporary jazz and rock albums,in between i've collect around 1k.long live vinyl
just started collecting. I see why they're called vinyl junkies. GAWD I Play one record and then I want more, it's like cigarettes but it won't give you lung cancer. Once I get money it goes toward records mostly. Records rock!!!- as long as you have a record player!
been collecting vinyl for 20 years.....i have a love-hate relationship with it....it's cool until you have to move and you have 100,000 records.....anybody want some albums?.. lol
kiss was gawdy,,that was their main attraction feature,, shock value,,Ive passed up plendy of kiss off , oops, i meant Kiss Records. But i have noticed, tons of records sitting in the sun at yard sales and flea markets,,,,,warped and ruined,, and the sellers didnt seem to notice!
I read an article recently about EMI's old vinyl pressing plants. A private company bought 11 of the 120 machines and now does solid business pressing new indie records and old reissues for the major labels. Google "financial times vinyl pressing emi" and it should be the first item listed.
He was informative, unpretentious and a good speaker.
I find vinyl to be way too fiddly. I didn't grow up with it so I'm used to CDs and I have no problems with them. I can't hear any audio quality difference between vinyl and CD.
The only vinyl record I ever bought was "This Years Model" by Elvis Costello 2nd hand for £2 ($4).
Vinyl will survive because it has become the main audiophile format. Given a good system, vinyl will beat CDs and downloads hands down in sound quality. Vinyl mastering is generally MUCH better than mastering on digital formats as well.
Thank you soooooo much for this!! I just read the entire article! It is so true. Everyone should read this, from artists, sound engineers to the listeners! 1000 Thanks!
@Sugardawg34 yeah man, i got so many albums on both vinyl and CD, the digitally remastered versions are always mastered so bad, the bass always like blows you know, when it sounds distorted like its grinding against something rather than a nice smooth boom. Carla Thomas's Memphis Queen album on CD is very good example of horrible remastering, almost every song has horrible bass that blows all the other levels and sounds distorted as hell, but the vinyl is so nice.
11,000 records! Damn...I work in the industry, and have been collection all my life, and I'd say I've got between 2,000 and 3,000. Plus I've given away or traded away hundreds easily. How did you come to be in possession on 11,000 records?
Just bought them via Marktplaats (most popular site for cheap stuff in Holland) and via eBay or other ways. There are still lot of record to find and I love it.
