  • No no no no...why oh why??? Never understood why people have to slaughter a perfectly good song. The feeling of this song is what is important. And I'm sorry to say, this cover version just doesn't cut it for me. They haven't even made it their own, it's just a weak attempt to play it like the original. Such a shame, cause I belive that you would be able to make a great cover of this song if you made it your own. This just doesn't!

  • A good song is always a good song, but I think this sounds too much like "Lying Eys". I personally prefer the origial as it´s minimal, so when the bridges and changes come in, they hit much harder. A beautiful song, probably one of the best by Del Amitri....a most underrated band.

  • This is my favourite Del Amitri song. I thought this was a very beautiful cover, and a beautiful clip to go with it. Such a powerful song needs sensitivity and respect. This did it well.

  • BRAKES*

  • billy ray cyrus meets kurt cobain lol

  • wow .... i love this song .. like a cry when ever i hear it .,.. coz my only love sent it to me before she leaves me in 3 weeks

  • this sounds like a cheap country backing track version on a song that really didn't need to be covered, especially not in this way! Why do some people insist on doing crap versions of great songs, if u like the song, GREAT, cover it at LIVE gigs, not release a POOR version to make some cash from someone else's HEARTFELT lyrics! FAIL!

  • I like the lyrics to this song , this is an awesome piece

  • Great song I'm gonna c u guys at the big ex In bridgewater!! Can't wait

  • Great song, terrible version that adds nothing but a whining steel guitar.

  • Better than original, better voice, I'm sorry to say.

  • @RICHARDTOOROP Are you serious!!!!!!? I'm sure you are sorry to say and also COMPLETELY incorrect!

  • @MrEdcrowley100 No, I heard both versions, I am absolutely right, you are wrong to think different, if taste doesn't count.

  • To me this song has always been about a married man who falls in love with another woman.

  • @furberman i always thought of some couple, who accidentaly killed someone with their car and they we're in a situation where they needed to dump the body! ha ha

  • @MrEdcrowley100 The song 'Driving with the Brakes on' is about a couple returning from an abortion clinic after terminating their childs life.

  • this version just makes me realise how good del amitri were, nothin against country tunes, but this cover is just a straight up twang'd copy

  • I LOVE this song, and have got to say how much better Chris looks with short hair and less scruff now, but I still love the band no matter what!

  • I LOVE this song, and have got to say how much better Chris looks with short hair now, but I still love the band no matter what!

  • ...why do people 'bitch' when listening to music...listen or leave, simple enough!!

  • @arthriticMamm0 it maybe because we care!

  • Maybe its because we like good music!

  • Original sucks.

    This is great. ♥

  • @1XxXEmoBitchXxX1 the mind boggles with idiot comments like that!

  • @MrEdcrowley100 Cool story bro. Tell it again.

  • The only thing good about this is that it proves Doc Walker has good tastes in music... Sorry though it is no where near as good as the original. Bumping up the moonshine jug style bass line and singing weak winded harmonies does not match up to the original version. I may be biased though as I am not a big fan of country music and this is one of my favorite songs of all time.

  • i laugh at all the ppl who tell their life story on every song they listen to how its influenced their life in someway who cares jus say you like the song get a life

  • @PaintinVandal Actually, those people you laugh at are telling the story of their lives, so don't tell 'em to get a life. They clearly know how to enjoy music. Obviously you don't.

  • think the red rag top convertible has anything to do with red rag top another song about abortions

  • I just found out that this was a cover. I will always think of this as a Doc Walker song

  • @nicholasczapiewski i suggest you get Del Amitri's - Hatful of rain (Greatest hits) album then

  • @cheeserockfan ok.. well we all have our own opinions..

  • Ermm, not a bad band, but I don't think this cover improves a classic. A section is missed out of the second verse - "and we might get lost someplace, so desolate that no-one where we're from, has ever gone" - WHY? The whole feel is a little too-fast, and whereas the original was recorded in Eb, this is in Gb - which changes the whole mood, backing-away the heart-breaking tonality of the original. I'll try some other Doc Walker, and hope I like it!

  • One has to know the subject matter of the song to make a worthwhile comment.

  • @clembo Right* srry i wrote wright.

  • @clembo yea i know the other guy said before that the video was messed up because it said shes got the wheel so he thought the girl was driving but the guy was driving in the video. so i was telling him no that the song video is wright that the girl was steering the convo not the car. if you read further down you would have known that.

  • Lovin this version of a seriously brilliant song... The original Del Amitri version and this are quite difficult to compare due to their different styles, this is a tad soulless in comparison to the original which really takes you into the song and the emotion of the situation it portrays, to the point you can imagine Currie recording it during the actual event to which it relates ... this sounds like the cover version that it is .. I still quite like it though....

  • Comment removed

  • @cheeserocfan ya but he is driving the car but shes got the wheel as in she is controling the mood. shes not actually driving the car!

  • @wolfe1008

It was essential that this "women driving" magic is strictly a metaphor within the song. If the mood of the song was actually a woman driving then I couldn't imagine an orchestra of nails of chalkboards obnoxious enough to emulate the experience.

  • @wolfe1008

Don't agree, the video is a visual interpretation of the lyrics.

I feel that it should represent the guy being led on a journey that he has no control over. ( i.e HER body, Her Kid, HER decision ,.. so all he can do is hang on ). The idea that he then has contorl of the car contradicts this.

  • This version is just too upbeat for me. It makes a great country song but it needs to be slowed down some.

  • I like it... as a big Justin Currie fan I can see how there mught be a bit of opposition to a cover version but I like the countrified feel and the video tells a much better story...

  • Look, country may rock to some and others may just enjoy the cover but do you really know what the song is about? Stop bullshittiing and admit that country artists need to stop stealing from other genres because they can't write a good song. Hmmmm... Listening to the current Glen Beck rally I have a hard time understanding how "Die Hard" country fans can enjoy this song about ABORTION, but do explain yourselves. Please help me understand.

  • Man, this is really awful! Country (which I normally like) does not deserve Justin Currie. Sloppy and this totally loses the meaning. Excuse me while I punch something.

  • I prefer Doc Walker's version. The harmonies are haunting, and harmonies are what make Doc Walker magical. I agree with those who've already mentioned that this song was meant to be country. Justin Currie did write a beautiful song, though.

  • this song gives me the chills

  • In my opinion it's a good version but for me the Del Amitri' song is the best =)

  • cheeserockfan... uhm when he says shes got the wheel.. he doesnt mean that she actually has the wheel as in driving the car...

  • @wolfe1008 Of course he does.. listen to the song. "She's got the wheel", "steering on." The whole song is a abou ta journey after a hard decision..

    Seriously ??

  • Even if your talking about 'she's got the wheel' in terms of steering the relationship - the visiual interpretation portrayed in the video doesn't support the 'control' that she is mean to have.

  • its ok but i would prefer the Del Amitri original version fer sure

  • if this guy knew the meaning of the song he wouldn't make it so upbeat. slaughtered.

  • Have to say i prefer this cover to the del amitri original. And im a huge Del amitri fan. Just has a little something to it that the original lacks. Almost s though it was meant to be a country song

  • @StLukes4eva It's a pleasant enough cover, but I'll respectfully choose to find your comment amazing.

  • Fatal flaw Mr Director.. when he sings "But she's got the wheel".. the guy is driving in the video.

    Bad times.. bad times, indeed.

  • you spelt brakes wrong

  • A happy version of a song about abortion!

    Interesting.

  • I love 2:45 to 3:15 , its unreal

  • this is a fantastic cover. I loved it.

  • Country belongs in country. Most of the country covers i hear of indie/pop songs are sad attempts.

  • i was always told one shouldn't cover a song unless one can improve upon the original by adding something new to it.... sorry, but this just sounds like the original with a twang. I'll stick to Del Amitri on this one.

  • good version not a patch on the original tho tut tut and thrice tut

  • There from portage la prairie not nebraska LOL

  • They're from Norfolk NE. LOL

  • What's with the foul mouth user name, you have to be a complete moron to have the F word in a user name, no need what-so-ever for that. Loser

  • i'm going to see him in concert in feb. soo excited can't wait

  • Haha so am I! Can't wait till they come to Saint John!!!

  • these guys are pure canadian

  • canadian bacon w/pineapple? this is one of the best live accoustic bands in the world and noone's record production in Nashville compares w/ DW's. they are kind of the Beatles of country music only hardly anyone really knows it yet.

  • I love this Nebraska band

  • canadian band, just sayin

  • hey friends i think in here everyone likes country music like me :)and i ve just discover this type of music and i realy liked it so i want to make a archive from country music can anyone help me ? for example from the past to today which songs or singers is the top? if anyone can help me i ll be presure :)

  • I SO SAW THESE GUYS LAST NIGHT!!!

  • yeah yeah i keep listen to it

  • I've listened to both versions and both are great, but I'm a big fan of harmonies and of country music, so I prefer the Doc Walker version.

  • I think both versions have their quality.

This one is has more mainstream appeal - it's a toe-tapping country song, and I like that they deliberately put their own style on it. I also like the harmony of their voices on it. Also, by remaking it, they've put some focus on the song and people can find the original all over again.

The original is very raw, and really captures the emotion of the couple that are at the centre of the story. Justin Currie has an incredible amount of talent!

  • nicely put

  • Your right,, there is hardly any emotion in this version.. Sounds bland..

  • my brakes are off...lol...foot on gas so let get this going : )...lol

  • A very good cover of a great song. With all due respect , "The Del's guy's name" is Justin Currie by the way. He is an amazing talent, who not only wrote this song , but wrote and performed many others of this caliber. The original version of this song is exceptional, both on CD and live in concert, as I had the privilege of seeing Del Amitri many times. We can debate what version is better, and although this C&W is good, I will take the originial any day of the week.

  • After listening to both versions several times I can only say that both are great.

What makes Justin's version better is the audience singing on the background. Without it it wouldn't be so emotional. Audience always adds a little bonus to it.

To me Doc Walkers country twang sounds better though.

  • I have watched both versions and I think I prefer the smoothed out countrified version. And this is not a Stupid American the band is CANADIAN. Is it so Soulful? Yes, but that is the style i prefere if i wanted to listen to Up down and intended Disonance I would listen to my NIN Albums.

  • The fact is this is a great song, both versions! Just depends what mood your in as to which is better

  • a great song who ever singsit except simon mace

  • style in and of itself ,is no measure of quality. Walker is a musical artist of the first rank. Style is a blunt object , useful mostly for hacks, bigots and goons. The question is, has he got the musical goods? In spades dude.

  • are docwalkers records unavailible in the us? If so would someone in canada sell them to me?

  • Thank goodness somebody else knows how good a song writer Justin Currie is. Countrified or not...it's a great song.

  • way better..del amitris is sappy and it sucks...country way better...

  • MUCH....................TIGHTER

  • HIT..........

  • This version compared to Del Amitri's....THIS VERSION by far better! Doc sings it with more emotion and passion...they now own this song!

  • DOC WALKER = HOT HOT HOT!!!

  • I still prefer Del Amitri's version. But this is not bad though. country feel. =)

  • love it!!

  • this is way better then Del Amitri's version i find

  • this song is the most awesome lyrics created by Del amitri, but I like this version of the song best.

  • I saw Doc Walker in Portage La Prarie a looong time ago, I wish I loved back then like I do now <3 They are one of my fav bands!

  • this is the song of my life!!!!!

  • Doc Walker = LOVE! <3

  • Doc Walker is soooo Awesome....I Love This Song/Video...!!

  • This is a great song

  • This is the saddest video ever....

  • This is my favourite Del Amitri song. I've never heard of Doc Walker before, but this is a pretty good cover of Driving With the Brakes On and he has a good voice. However, I prefer Del Amitri's version and Justin Currie's voice, which has more passion and feeling.

  • Thank you for saying that. I agree with you 100%.

  • del amitri's original is much better but this is still pretty pleasant

  • this is my favorite doc walker song

  • Who is the woman? Sure I recognise her from somewhere....

  • Del Mitri's version is so much better. Justin Currie sings it much better because it is his song.

  • he used to live near me:)

  • luv this song

  • For me, this lacks the passion of the Del Amitri version, but still pretty good.

  • its I.

  • Good version of the Del Amitri original, very relaxing.

  • doc walker is the best country singer!!!!!!

  • this is my all time FAV keep it up , Doc

  • nice voice but where is the feeling?del ametri's version is full of heart and guts it sounds rough and like the bloke is actualy going through it

  • Absofuckinglutely johnhlive!!

THis one is okay, but have to agree, its just too polished!! Original version is rough and that compliments the heartbreaking theme!!

I heard its about an abortion, but i might be wrong!!

  • it is.. "and the kid is gone"

  • I AGREE !!!!

  • A lil too much country for me...I still prefer DelAmitris original version

  • this guy has an awesome voice and i like this version alot. still cant go past del amitris version though can ya?
