to hamletunedone: I do not completely agree. With all of the absorbing of assets and resources, with all of the quantities of money that are being funneled to the banking cartels...the absolutely wrong people will have sway with it over most of the people relying on it, hence US governments need to force people to look at it's government as a necessity.
there's also a plan for a oil pipeline through afghanistan as the the iran option is not viable. this pipeline could be the real reason for US precense... apparently 2 major bases are located along the proposed pipe route
The Taliban were Building Schools & Hospitals as well as encouraging the local farmers to plant edible crops - Why must you & other media voices continue to spout the US Propaganda's attempt of making all of our enemies some "Vile" abomination - These are just people, like you & me, who are doing EXACTLY what you & I would do if a foreign soldier kicked open our door w/out provocation - WE WOULD KILL THE INTRUDER or die trying!
I think the west has the technology to 'fix' the opium problem. Here is my military strategy. An aerial incendiary bombardment of all opium crops. If it ain't edible we bomb it. The opium rich smoke will pacify the locals, war over. The big losers though would be the American Stock Market which is what this war is really about (ensuring rich corporate financiers maintain their strangle hold over shit heels like us).
The U.S.A.s prohibition on drugs created Mexico's drug wars. The U.S.A.s global capitalism created Mexico's sweat shop conditions. Not content with that, they must rob and destroy and enslave everybody and thing in the planet. The whole time telling everybody about thier freedom and democracy.
The reason for that is that most people are essentially good so Americans themselves must be lied to to continue the immorality, It's a few mentally warped people at the top who keep things going this way. (not to mention a sophisticated media system to obfuscate and neuter democracy, with which the imperial policies would never continue, for example only 20% of Americans believe that only countries that already have nukes should be allowed to have them, a decidedly non imperial stance)
Afghanistan never attack the U.S.. Never declared war on the U.S.. And doesn't have a standing army that could threaten the U.S.. To get the truth to the U.S. people we need to get Malalai Joya on the main stream U.S. news channels.
Drug problems? What problems? The opium money is used for clandestine operations. The CIA has never had it so good. When the Taliban was in power and the poppy was being eradicated, that was a problem.
The Nobel peace prize winner perpetuating the endless wars.. and the brave new world begins.
Aren't there arms flowing in illegally from North Korea and also from Russia into Afghanistan? Thought I read that somewhere.. Iran stopping North Korean ships. As long as there's a market, there will be a supplier. Isn't that like the same situation that bankrupted Russia? People are so stupid for supporting a troop surge to fight guerilla warfare. Historically speaking, guerillas have never been defeated because they aren't an "organization" in the way the US military or mercenaries are.
"They" don't care much about the drug money/industry/corruption so long as they get their large concession cut on oil exploration not only for the US market but with high prospects to sell over to China and India, 2 huge potential markets.
Dealing with Iran to get a possible oil concession is impossible (hence why J.MCcain and neo-cons closely related to oil business wanted to much a war with Iran to nation build "democracy")
Do not forget the main problem and its origin. Afghanistan was a war to some extent justified if and only if the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden were the perpetrators of 9/11. Assuming they are guilty, at least the war is justifiable. But the war in Iraq is a war that Bush created by lies for his own interest and his inner circle. In other words the president (Bush) used his power to benefit himself and his friends. They are different wars and I not in favor of none
But if Bin Laden is guilty, I still don't see how invading another country because a criminal lives there is justified.
Ofcourse, this depends on whether you see terrorism as an "act of war" or a crime. I believe it's the latter, so invading another country because it houses a criminal (perpetrator of a crime) is still not justified.
@hamletundone sry not gonna happen ... it will if Obama gets 4 more years ... but he will Lose in 2012 ... and yes America needs to get out of Afghanistan now ... why isn't Obama pulling them out ?!? ... to help kill the Dollar ....
Also look at the deals the private contractors companies like those under former Blackwater, now Xe International LLC through the US State Dept. Also there are the drones. So, many companies have made money off of Afghanistan, Iraq, and the US govt.
Not to mention the arms deals to both Afghanistan and Iraq.
The government wasting money... You do not have enough parts to cover the fraud in this war. The big elephant in the room is Halliburton and Black water in Iraq so I believe all you have to do is follow a pipeline or two to find real fraud in Afghanistan... good Piece wish more people bothered to listen to this.

Most likely we will see a Balkanization of Afghanistan with countries such as Pashtunistan finding themselves a place on the map.

Traditionally occupying armies are not to protect the nations that they are in. How about a look at that fact? Can ant one say Imperialism?

You keep discussing this like its about people and policies....lol
Its about money - follow the money.
How much does the US stand to extort from Afganistan for building their nation?
Does not everyone know that Afganistan is the "Grave Yard of Empires" as in they all fall there?
Follow the money you can predict the future. Greed, corruption, lies, deceit. He... this isn't 'Change'....
I guess WE couldn't - but THEY could.

I think everyone is growing tired of having their corrupt and grotesque government smeared in their faces.
Its hard enough to find out you've been lied too your entire live by these criminals - but that they are your own government. Wow...2009 or 1984?
