  • Long Live Big Six!!!

    373 wins.

Three consecutive shutouts in the 1905 World Series.

    37-11 in the 1908 season with a 1.43 ERA.

And a great, honest, decent man.

    All hail Matty!

  • Very good call; let's see if anyone can hope to equal much less top those 3 shutouts in '05. Not gonna happen.

37-11; would love to meet those who caused that 11.

A wonderful and honest man; a Phi Gam brother as well.

    Indeed, long live Big Six!

  • Geez, he threw so many pitches. He was just first of many great Giants pitchers, i.e, Carl Hubbell, Gaylord Perry, Juan Marichal, etc.

  • Tim Lincecum...

  • Well yeah, but you go down as an iconic figure after you've stayed around the league.

Btrw, I'm a big Giants fan.

  • I am related to that guy

  • shut up

  • My name is Spartacus!

  • i am related to that him

  • There is some Mathewson material in existence. The most famous is from 1906 where he is warming up and he drops the ball thrown to him from the catcher (which is shown here). Believe it or not, Mathewson is also credited for the first baseball blooper because of that. Anyway, the 1905 World Series was apparently filmed; however, it has not turned up. How cool would that be to see him and the rest of the Giants in those wild black uniforms they wore for the Series!

  • Thanks for posting this, love seeing the greats of the past!

  • I'm excited to see this and another video of Christy here on YouTube. Although you won't find us in the history books Christy is my great, great grandfather, seeing the videos is like looking at my dad and brother!

  • Sorry, but it is impossible for Christy to be your great, great grandfather. Christy had only one son, Christy Jr., and Christy Jr. never had children.

  • Well i was told he is my great great uncle lol My name is christopher allen mathewson so i don't know where i fit if i fit lol

  • My X-wife is Lesa Mathewson, her father John Mathewson is "Matty's" brother....It's a small world after all....If ya don't believe me, do sum family history reserch...or contact me & I'll give ya Johns phone number and u can call him...Peace...

  • so, lemme get this straight , matty was born in 1880 , so his brother was born , at latest , around a890-1900...which makes him ONE HUNRED AND 107 to 177 at the YOUNGEST..and he is ur ex father in law, but his son in law is young enuff to use a phrase like 'peace'?...hmm

    suuuuuuuuuure

  • * born in 1890 to 1900 at the LATEST, which makes your ALLEGED father in law 107 to 117 years old?*..lol...and you're an 80 year old guy surfing the web , using phrases like 'peace', and 'sum'?....suuuuuuuuure

  • lol

  • there are a few more clips of matty around

one of him warming up next to mgr john mcgraw....

and one of him againsta wooden fence throwing

and a few 'fast motion ' looking clips in games

  • Thanks for posting! I also heard there is one video of Mathewson's pitching. I'm so happy it's posted on youtube.

  • Thanks for posting the Christy Mathewson clip. I believe that is the only film of him in existence.

  • It kinda sucks, you would think there would be more film footage of the baseball players of this era, but for whatever reason there isn't. How awesome would it be to see Walter Johnson or Christy Mathewson pitch a game, from the center-field camera angle?

  • My guess is that a lot of the film footage must have deteriorated over the years. For whatever reason, boxing seems a lot better documented than baseball. You can find films of many key ancient boxing matches, but not much on an old World Series, for instance. Yeah, Walter Johnson's whip-like pitching style is awesome to watch. Amazing that he could throw so hard with that motion.
