  • stonewall classic

  • BOTH MEATLOAF AND MANILOW'S VERSION ARE WELL DONE, EACH

TO THEIR OWN MUSICAL STYLE, BUT ALSO VERY SIMILAR IN SOME RESPECTS,

    2 THUMBS WAY UP!!!

  • Barry's version moves me a bit more than this dude's version does.

  • @123Rockchild this is the proverbial apples / oranges comparison . barrys version just drives me insane with rage as i think back at everything going on in my life back then . and meatloafs version calms me as i think about my senior year of high school when meatloaf first came out . THEY ARE BOTH BEYOND EXCELLENT !

  • dennett316 you sound like the kind of idiot that keeps x factor on tv coz you know shit diddly about music

  • Ambiguous comment (hey, finally someone not looking for thumbs ups ;-) )

    1) I hardy listen to the radio anymore so I'm double grateful for finding something new (though old) and great on youtube. I listened to it 3 times in a row already.

    2) His face is so full of passion in this video, it reminded me of someone from the start. It took me quite while to figure out who it is... Bianca Ryan during her first performance in America's got talent. No offence girl - really!!!

  • no truer word,s were spoken haggard360 as for you dennett316. What rock did you crawel out from under. You dont,t have the brain cell,s to know talent class elgance when you are looking at it and never will, To dumb and stupid to do so

  • hey shared a hugely successful symbiotic relationship. thank god. and we have been blessed with operatic ballards and raw passions. yeah ima fan

  • Did marc bolan write this song /

  • I actually thought that this was a Baary Manilow song, but Meat's version is much stronger than Bazza's ever could

  • Why oh why didn't he sing this song last night at the Brisbane concert??

  • interesting..... fat people music.... wtf didnt I think of that?

  • @leonakita fuck you bitch i weight 125 pounds and would eat your babies and still listen to meatloaf. bitch im nasty

  • @haggard360 ahahahaha....125 lbs..thats an appetizer for your tubby hero = MEATLOAF!

  • @leonakita why dont you go jerk yourself off and go play in traffic? thanks

  • @haggard360 AHAHAHAHA... truth hurts, ehh?

  • @leonakita yeah your killing me, i think im going to go play the blood violin just cause some fag on youtube, idiot

  • im 21 and love meatloaf been listing to him all my life, my dad gave me bat out of hell vol 1 and havnt stopped listing yet. people need to know what a real musician is.

  • @haggard360 I'm sure you've been listening to Meat Loaf, while making a list of your favorite songs :D

  • Just out of curiosity, anybody know who all the musicians & 2 back up singers are in the video with Meatloaf? Thx

  • You know what I love? The fact that Meat's face hasn't changed a damn bit.

  • Love this song, but I think the bad ass part is the back-up singers.

  • @Pinwormx Rory Dodd is awesome.

  • @doug2166 I think Meatloaf's version is on his 'Dead Ringer' album. I only knew of Manilow's version until recently when I wondered if (and found out that) Meatloaf had done a version - I'd been listening to the song and thought, "that sounds like a Jim Steinman kinda song, Meatloaf must have sung it at some time." ... and he has.

  • @BigBubbasBrassBand Have you heard Jim Steinman's version of Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through"? Meat does a much better version, iMO

  • wow such passion . i bet you wish you could do this song on karaoke night ?

  • @goofuskac , Meat Loaf did this song first, in 1981. I have loved Meat Loaf since I was 5, and I am 38 now. Barry Manilow butchered it.

  • awesome tune , every meatloaf tribute ive ever seen never sing this because they can't i reckon.

  • this song is great...why is not it as famous as it should be...Or is it?

  • Comment removed

  • i have loved meatloaf since i was 9, im 11 now. not so old.................. whatever........................ meatloaf is really awesome! all bands made after 2000 are garbage

long live meatloaf, led zepplin, eagles( well not long live........),moody blues, guns and roses, rolling stones ect. love proper music baby!

  • Manilow does a great version of this song. Better than Meatloaf? They're different. I love Manilow's.

  • @wutheringheathcliff i agree that they are two different versions, but I do like Barry's version....to be honest, tonight is the first time I've ever heard Meat Loaf's version.....just curious which Meat Loaf album is this from?

  • I'm sorry, but Barry Manilow OWNS this song. Back in 1983 when our local 'top-40' station played this song, all was right with the world.

  • @goofuskac Your having a laugh !!!!! pmsl

  • This was the very first album I ever bought of Meat Loaf, and I really bought it because of the album art.Little did I know the greatness I had discovered.

  • To Dyxe47, Not only did Manilow not write this song, he didn't even record it first. This is the original. I happen to like Manilow's better personally, but this version is great. I take nothing away from it.

  • its just the raw passion he performs with that make you believe every word.

the girls in my past i wish i coulda sung this song to......wtg meat.

  • OMG He is awesome! I love him!

  • This is so much better than Manilow's.

  • I'm pretty sure Barry Manilow wrote this one.

  • @Dyxe47 Jim Steinman wrote this song and Meat Loaf recorded the original Manilow did a god damn awful cover of it

  • Sometimes I think I'm the only one on the planet with ears that work.

  • @Replayability must be just you and me then lol

  • manilow version is so crappy compared to the one true artist (meatloaf)

  • i've read em and wept so long ago i'd forgotten (26 yrs ago) but we turned out good thanks 4 the memories

  • Who's that crying at the end of this video. Also Meat Loaf looks emotional in this video. Well it is an emotional song. What's it about. Read em and Weep obviously means reading sad things, storys or new. Bacicly Read and then cry

  • Very good, but I must agree with the many others, Manilow did a much better job!

  • @VintageRetroNeatStuf

Manilow sings good but, he gives so much feeling that he could sing a shopping list like "a bottle of milk and a dozen of eggs".

  • this is not on The Very Best Of MeatLoaf ????

  • Some one who can transfer this song? I only have the one from Barry Manilow

  • all these ace meatloaf classics ..but where is ...i kill you if you don't come back

  • I love Meatloaf, but I think Barry Manilow did this one better.

  • @marianware did barry do the cover version of this ? or vice versa,

  • @frostyone0164 Barry did the cover of this. It was Meat Loaf's song originally... and I think he did a great job with it, for certain. I just liked Barry's version of this particular song better. I've heard it covered by several other artists, but Meat Loaf and Manilow are the only ones to do it well, IMHO.

  • @marianware hiya, thanks for that, ill search for the manilow version and also search for the other artists who covered it,

  • Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman - the perfect combination to success - anyone notice they were BOTH most successful with each other than without each other, meat needed jim's amazing songwriting and NOONE could sing a Steinman song like Meat could

  • @AshArcherMusic barry manilow, bonnie tyler and air supply all made hits out of steinman tunes, and they were good but compared to meat loaf they couldn't deliver one worth a shit

  • @AshArcherMusic In all fairness, Barry Manilow did do a great rendition of this song.

  • @AshArcherMusic I think Steinman had a lot of success outside of meatloaf - but yeah, they worked well together too.

  • BEST OF THE BEST !

  • Yes a another Jim Steinman written song sung by our wonderful Meat Loaf. Like no other can sing it. Sings it with so much emotion and feeling. Passion within

  • ((HUGS)). I know how it hurts to lose somebody, I've been there too. And it's true how the tears can help release the pain from your heart. I hope you will be ok. :)

  • First time I like 2 versions of a song o.o

  • barry's is good, and Meat Loaf ver is too good, ,,,,, no. this is great

  • One of the greatest voices in rock! ...and such a nice, humble man!

  • Unreal

  • Um..wow! I can listen to Barry Manilow's version and go on. But listening to Meatloaf's version reduces me to tears! I can really FEEL the emotion when "Meaty" sings this. Just an absolutely AWESOME performance!

  • @MoosicandCritters Ohh, f... I cryed so many tears over the girl I lost. It's not first time I use this numb. It release pain from my heart, even I cry so mush :-)

  • this guy hates Americans

  • @niksplush he was born in dallas -_-

  • COME ON AND LOOK AT ME AND READ EM AND WEEP

Its there in my eyes and thats all I can say :D

  • Michael lee? thought his name was marvin lee?

  • @dazid1 He changed it. :)

  • @dazid1 it is marvin

  • I guess ultimately it comes down to personal choice. Meat loaf is, by far, the more dramatic and superior singer, and his version is, without doubt, absolutely superb, but Steinman had far more to do with the production of the Manilow version which, to me, makes it still worthy of a listen. Anyway, it's good to like both versions.

  • Meat Loaf..... uhhhhhhh... for once in my talkative life I am almost speechless.........

  • I love meat loafs version as well as manilows! I enjoy each version for its style and grace...

  • @MrYamato67 Same here. Both have their own unique style, which makes each version of this song a real pleasure to listen to.

  • he is called marvin not michael

  • his name is marvin

  • Another classic Jim Steinman song...and, although, I like Meatloaf, I WILL admit that B. Manilow's version has more of a cresendo quality...But, hey, meatloaf always does well

  • @zauriel1

Hi, I agree with you about Barry Manilow's version, and I think only a true Steinman fan would recognise this. Don't know if you ever listen to a band called Nightwish, but they're the closest I have come across to compete with Steinman's brilliance - The Poet and the Pendulum is pretty close. Steve.

  • I think Meatloafs songs are great, but i saw him live at Warwick Castle in England a few years back and live he was shite!!! I was gutted!!

  • Nice riding a Harley with this on your mind ;)

  • Read 'Em and Weep is a pop music song composed by Jim Steinman. Originally written for Meat Loaf and recorded on his 1981 album Dead Ringer

  • One of best Meatloaf Songs ever I lov eit why don't listen and read em' and weep . Cheers Reaper 1b

  • This is good. But Barry Manilow still sang it first and better.

  • @gntlbear barry manilow sung it second, this was 1981 barry's was 83 and his is terrible

  • @werewolfnomore44 ......Yeah Barry should have left this one alone.

  • has n e 1 got ..ill kill you if you don,t come back ..by meatloaf cheers

  • my, this is my new favorite song! Most powerfull vocal I've heard. I've always liked Meatloaf, but he even outdid himself. Can't believe I never heard his WAAYYY better version.

  • Loved meat loaf since i was about 12yrs old. I am 42 now. Hes the master

  • @ThePagey4... yeah, he's a master at devouring buffets, the lardass! I have more talent in the filth under my pinky toe's toenail, than this wailing manatee ever had ! Capiche?

  • @leonakita Cool, post a link to one of your song videos please...I'd love to hear it if you're so much better than Meatloaf. I've scoured the charts for you and haven't seen your stuff, so you must be so talanted that your brilliance goes undiscovered. Please let me hear the magic that is leonakita.

  • @dennett316 wtf is your problem fatso?.... you get your hippo ass banned from Ole Country Buffet, for feeding like a pregnant whale?.... er what???

  • @leonakita Nothing wrong with me, just calling you on your bullshit. What the fuck is Ole Country Buffet? Love how you have to resort to name calling, you're a true class act and not at all a pathetic internet tough guy revelling in his anonymity.

  • @leonakita You said you had more talent than him....then let's hear it. 2 months on and we're still waiting. Yeah, full of shit, just as I thought.

  • @leonakita In his first recording session, Meatloaf sang a note so high he blew the fuses in the recording equipment. And yet he still manages to sound good. THAT is talent.

  • another good song from jim stinmam aka meat loaf, and most of their albums are pretty good, and all of them have different songs to each one wich have been produced.

  • Wow, you really can see it in his eyes...

  • would it be too much to ask if you could replace this video with one that actually has the volume level set to something higher than really really quiet, how in hades can you play meatloaf with this level of volume, you barbarian !!!

  • meatloaf does this 1000x better than manilow. he has more heart and passion in the song than he did. barry is talented, dont get me wrong, but meat blows him outta the water and then some.

  • Why bother? I like Meat Loaf--from the time when I heard "Two out of three ain't bad" and found it was by someone called "Meat Loaf" that I'd never heard of. I like most of what he's done. I could think of what he could do with "Read'em and Weep". Well, maybe, but he didn't. This is what gives covers a bad name. Too bad--a waste of his time and talent.

  • Jim Steinman is the master of the melodramatic epic.

  • bat out of hell a hard act to follow like thriller or brothers in arms! if you give these songs a chance they sound pretty good ,this was 1981 a good four years after BAT ,music was changing with new romantic and post punk leftovers! davey johnstone on guitar from elton john band!

  • Still my favourite Meatloaf song by far xx

  • One of my favorite Meat Loaf songs ever...I can't see how Barry Manilow's version was a bigger hit than this one

  • @Fenechboy11

Barry is just a better artist.

  • @kittyfloor I'm not going to get in an argument with you over who's better, but Bat out of Hell I and II beg to differ :P Big time

  • Meatloaf's version is definitely the best, like his version of Left in the Dark, another Steinman song originally done by Barbra Streisand.

  • @RichXbox360 Actually Streisand's version of Left in the Dark was a cover of Steinman's own release of this somg on Bad for Good in 81.....Streisand's version was 85 and Meats's cover was in 95

  • Listening to Meat Loaf's new album, "Hang Cool Teddy Bear", and I can honestly say he and Jim Steinman should work together a LOT more. The new album just doesn't have the Meat Loaf passion that's found in his other work.

Compare any song on it to this song, or any other he and Steinman did, and you'll see.

  • Truly one of his best songs. Meat Loaf is phenonemal; the way he brings the song.

  • My favourite Meatloaf song, very under-rated

  • I've watched both Meat Loaf's version and Barry Manilow's and I can honestly say the only version I want to listen to again and again is Meat Loaf's. This is not Manilows style. It is far too gritty a song for him.

  • I don't think you can sing this song without reaching into the bottomost depths of your soul. Failure to do so would render this song useless. This is another Steinman classic. He knows how to write songs to suit singers. The only other song writer I can say comes close is Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish fame. Listen to Creek Mary's Blood and The Poet & The Pendulum and I hope you will understand what I mean.

  • Majestic...as many of Steinman's songs are.

  • I like Barry Manilow's version (it's my favorite Barry Manilow song, although I'm not a big fan of his) but Meat Loaf (born Marvin Aday) nails this song. Barry's version has a softer sad feel whereas Meat Loaf's puts anger and really tells the one who rejected him off.

  • what a fantastic version from a legendary singer. His choice in soccer clubs is great to.he supports Hartlepool United

  • Both versions are equally valid, Barry Manilow did a great job, Meat was Meat, bottom line it is all down to Jim Steinman & his genius as a songwriter.

  • @Sandros555

I don't remember the last time that someone made such great sense on a utube comment. Well said, my friend. It is all Jim.

  • @andromeda843 Oh yes. I definitely second that. Great comment by both of you. Air Supply, Barbara, Celine, Bonnie, Barry... it's all Jim.

  • this is one of the greatest songs of all time.

    This never gets old

  • Comment removed

  • I keep reading comments about how Meat's version compares to Barry's. I do not feel a person must choose one over the other. Why not enjoy both versions? Both men are great singers and can put so much passion into their performances.

  • This is definitely what I'm saying to my ex when she tries to get me back

  • Yet another Jim Steinman masterpiece

  • @jasperman515 they are the ultimate duo, with Meatoafs ability to sing and Jim steinman's abilit to write amazing songs they managed to conquer the world with there amazing rock.

  • @TheKais181 like elton john and bernie taupin!

  • @MrYourmomswallows ....WHAT? R U Crazy ? No Reworded, U R Crazy .

  • @sweetscatlady Why?

  • no one else will do..the way he sang this song...it's meant only for him....

  • This shits all over Barry Manilow's version!! Very powerful....yet another Steinman masterpiece amongst many!!

  • One of Texas's most talented children. He never fails to blow me away.

  • In the sober light of day, one of the greatest songs ever.

  • Both version's are good, but Meatloaf puts more into his version which puts the other to shame. Too bad it never made the charts. Still one of my favorites thou...

  • one of my fav meatloaf songs

  • fantastic bloody song!!!!

  • love the song!!

love the way he sing "Ohh whatever the cause.."

  • @coquiisland

Well put, there is nothing for me to add...

  • @R3moWilliams Hi, Hang Cool Teddy Bear, from the Hot Carribean Night! • To: Sir Michael Lee Aday *Meat Loaf*. When I watched this video, I was so impressed that I began to explore more abaut our Rock 'N' Hero and I don't want to stop. I am 54 years old and I had never seen a singer who proyected authentically with master four emotions in a song. These are the anxiety, the anger, the pain and the sadness of a lost love. The latin singers are dramatic singing but Meat Loaf suspasses to all. To listen sing and see him on stage is a transcendental experience.

  • Born Marvin Lee Aday..Sept 27 1947

  • @midnighttilldawn Yetp, the man's 62, but he doesn't look it IMO.

  • @coquiisland.........Meat is phenonemal. I saw him twice. Roy Orbison is up there too, to give him a run fo the money.

  • @youtootube99 Hi from the hot caribbean! Thank you very much for your comments. I do not think that a legend like Roy Orbison valued superficial things. He must have admired as a texan also the man of steel as it is Meat!

  • @coquiisland His first name's Marvin actually, and he's not a Sir, yet.

  • @RichXbox360 Hi from the hot Summer Night Caribbean! Thanks for your feeback it is a great opportunity to create!Marvin means friend of the sea and Michael means the holy warriors. Aday is the surname of Galician origin.Meat change his name to Michael Lee. You can read in his autobiography:To hell and back, p.30 (1999).Adonay is a hebrew word and it means Sir.The first time I wrotr to Meat I called him Sir, with a great respect and recognition, he deserves!

  • @RichXbox360 Hi all!Sir is used as an expression of respect to address someone who has control over something or someone.Meat has control over his gifts and fans. One of the many qualities that adorn Meat is his humility.I think he´ll be an honor to receive the tittle of Sir from the noble people of England, who valued as an artist and human being. He in surrender total on stage offered his own life (London, 11/17/03) with such magnitud and inner strenght that continue to do.

  • @RichXbox360 Hi to all! The true love is one Who offers his gifts have been given!

  • @coquiisland I also agree with you. I believe he is awesome beyond all means

  • @coquiisland meatloafs name is marvin lee aday

  • @yorkyrose Hi from the breeze Caribbean! Thank you for reply me! It is a creative time! I invite to you to read and find in Meat Loaf autobiography: To Hell and Back (1999) p.30, he changed his name to Michael Lee. He explains in detail the reasons why he did it. In interviews he has said that his friends still call him Marvin! In the summer I attended three of his concerts!Truly, more than Harry Potter, he makes and give you His Magic, because he will transform you and you will not be the same!

  • @coquiisland This is the man who simply put all his pasion in his musik. Try read his story. Up's and down's, speciel so down, that most would have never get uo gain. Thank to his beloved wife, and his will to sing, he can give us all his fantastic musik...

  • I dont understand y meat loaf has such a hard time adjusting to the 80s i mean face facts bat out of hell was amazing nothing else would top that but dead ringer album did have some really good songs this been my best 1 on the album. Problem with ppl is they just dont give meat loaf a chance. In my opinion hes in my alltime top 3 best singers

  • hey anyone heard barry manalow`s weak ass version of this song?

    very flat voiced and lame

  • yesi have it so not good as the proper version by meat loaf,

  • actually, i like barry's version and meatloaf's version. they are both good in my opinion even tho they sound different. it's good that we have diversity in music. some people like barry, some like meatloaf and people like me love them both. just my opinion.

  • both versions are excellent--they are both so good that I really can't choose between them
