Tim Duncan was the #1 pick like the year or 2 after that for the same reasons as Joe Smith. Some guys work out and some guys dont. The best college player who had some versatility to his game were still considered a lot safer picks with NBA scouts in the mid-late 90s than guys coming right out of high school who may not have matured physically or game wise yet.
