I did it this summer. Black Balsam to Dolly's Ice Cream ^_^. 23 miles in 24 hours. When we got ontop of Pilot mountain, it smelled like absolute pee, because everyone pees off the top. Most memorable pee of our lives :)
let me also add that the side we hiked up was a LOT steeper, which you probably realized on your way down...
The trail was unique, in that unlike trails in the smokies, its not that well maintained due to the fact that its a forest and not a park, you have to know where your water sources are b/f you leave and their are NO shelters, as we found out despite what the trail map says.
i've hiked the trail, however we started at the opposite end and finished the entire thing... let me say i thought we couldn't make it up Pilot mountain was painful thats for sure, however the view was well worth it. BEEAAUTIFUL!!
ive hiked that exact same trail, getting on top of pilot was a pain i will not lie, but you are missing out on the best part of that hike, you really are, that was my fourteen mile day. we started two miles before butter gap and ended at the last shelter before the boy scout camp
Some friends and I tried this hike and had to bail right before reaching Pilot Mnt...Glad to see some footage of what it looked like on the top!!! Happy Trails

I know right the trail aint that bad. Small potatoes compared to some of the hikes in the smokies.

It wasn't that bad of a hike just we had several problems.
1. Incoming Blizzard (Not good on the balds)
2. supply issues
3. Torn meniscus
