Steve, one mistake I think a lot of new bodybuilders make, is they join a gym and they get sucked into the machines. I think the weight machines are great once in awhile, but I tell people, if you want to bulk up, make sure you lift actual weights. The workouts you mentioned are all the ones I do, and your dead on, they get you results. But I noticed that you didn't mention Dead Lifts(!) Also you should let the the beginners know not to go right into heavy weights, or they may get injured.
Steve , im getting huge! THANKS TO YOU. Been doing your workout for a few months. Though i think i went overkill last week with 12sets barbell curl, 4set hammer curls 4sets reverse curls. /flex. hahahaha
How about calisthenics (push ups, pull ups, etc.) going to absolute failure? That is, doing push ups until your muscles give out and you can't even hold yourself up? I've gotten some good gains in the past by mixing it up, doing some heavier weights, lighter weights with a ton of reps, and the calisthenics ALL going to absolute failure.
Hey steve i was wondring what's better exersive, doing like a litlle exersive (for example 20 pushups and 20 sit-ups) every 1 hour or should i just do a big exersive once a day or two days??
You should elaborate on the amount of sets. Many bodybuilders hit 9-12 sets easily and it isn't overkill. That's simply 3-4 sets of 6 reps for 3 exercises. For example, bench press, dumbbell fly, incline dumbbell press. Or the deltoids. That's three heads, three sets a piece doesn't seem nearly as large as just saying 9 sets for shoulders. But what does he know, he's just in great shape. That all aside, what's optimal for one person isn't optimal for everyone. Test your own limits.
9-12 sets? Wow, the most I ever did was 2. I had a trainer for a while even and he told me that I wouldn't get anything out of additional sets after the second one.
i've been lifting weights for a year and a half now and my chest kind of looks the same, like before i started lifting. I'm proud of my results on my other parts but the chest is a problem. Everytime I workout my chest I just feel it in my shoulders. What is the problem?
when i do chest, i feel it the next day, when i do back, i feel it the next day, when i do arms i feel like the next day, when i do legs i feel it the next day.......now when i do shoulders i dont feel it the next day, no matter what i do i dont feel it in my shoulders. the only thing that got sore from shoulders is my traps. dunno what im doing wrong...

@BodyPerformanceTV ...... Hey, that is exactly the case with me when I'm doing my shoulders... No matter how hard I train them by lifting weights, they can't seem to get sore. Never EVER had sore shoulders from my weight lifting. BUT, when I play basketball for 2 hours, my shoulders are so sore next day, i feel like they are going to fall off my body. So, weightlifting = no sore shoulders, basketball = extremely sore shoulders. And I'm doing my shoulders exercises very intensely.
@IPWNBXRmash I get it to man ! the only few times I got sore was when I was at an MMA seminar trained shoulders the day before it didnt get sore they made me do a bunch of push ups there for a warm up than jumped to pad work my partner was over 6"4" reallyyy big guy I dont know his exact height but im 5"8" I was up to his shoulders so I was doing it for 2 hours + grappling than 30 mins extra grappling than 30 mins of sparring that day yes I did feel my shoulder sore I guess u have to kill it!
@BodyPerformanceTV Steve, I have a question I am 20 years old 5'11 and 140 lbs my strength has increased tremendously i bench 225lbs and curl 50lb dumbbells. I am 12% body fat and my body does not look any bigger even though my strength continues to increase. People that I go to the gym often question how do I lift so heavy but don't look as big as other people who lift the same weight? I know I lift intensely and do the basic exercises so what am I doing wrong? I eat 1600 calories a day.
@elite2291 You have to consume 3000+ calories per day to bulk up. 1600 is nothing, especially if your working out. Increase you calorie intake & get the right amount of of protein in your diet. DIET IS KEY!!! Do more research & you'll get your answer .

steve your damn smart lol quick question tho, i havent been feeling sore lately but been lifting with crazy intensity, is it bad i dont feel as sore before or im not working out enough??
@BodyPerformanceTV . To the host of this video. i am very much into weightlifting. unfortunately my testoserone is now all the way down to 264 because of a medication. would u say its still possible to build muscle or am i waisting my time lifting? please help
@ods1ODS Contrary to what idiots believe you can still build muscle with lower testosterone levels. AND hard lifting is one of the best ways of improving your test lelvels naturally.

They say you need 1 gram of protein per lb of bodyweight in order to simply maintain and more to actually grow, and it says that EVERYWHERE... but....
I started out a skinny 12 stone guy and now I'm 15+ stone, added weight in muscle, but I've never eaten more than 100g of protein in a day, nevermind the 200g+ I'm supposed to have.
@Bigdogg210607 The number of sets and exercises is going to vary based on a person's conditioning, how long they've been lifting, how hard, etc. I do at least 12 working sets for chest.
@BodyPerformanceTV hi steve ive been lifting for about 4 years now and have got some good gains i train 4-5 days a week the norm is 2 on 1 off 2 on 2off . I do 3-4 exercises and 3 work sets of 8 reps each on whatever muscle group I’m working that day. is this ok ??
@Bigdogg210607 Sure. The key is giving your muscle enough work (# of exercise, reps, set, weight) to work them hard and then giving them enough rest to recover. So you can do that in 3, 4, or 5 days a week it really doesn't matter. If your schedule works for you, great.
@hbedoy0817 high intensity interval training 30 second jog with 30 second sprint for a total 15 min i do this along with around 3000 cal diet an it burns the fat. i uasally do this after wt training. higher cals and more intensity works great for getting lean and building muscle for me anyways
hello Steve how are you...Steve i have been lifting weights for a month now lifting the heaviest weights that i can but im not seeing any results in size i have got stronger when i started i would curl 20lbs now im up to 35lbs but i see no size gains is that normal wil it take longer to start seeing any size thank you

@BodyPerformanceTV I work each body part twice a week with pyrmiaid (10-6-4) I try to lift heavy as im trying to put on mass and I would like to know if this is too much?
@DepressedBurrito yes, i used to train like that and i felt so weak and im a big fella.. and im only 16 and ive done it for a while.. stick to 5 days a week, two days rest repeat for 6 weeks then week off and all again.

@pypox Sure. Remember bulking comes from lifting heavy not eating. So just lift heavier and as your appetite picks up you'll gain muscle and size. Cardio doesn't burn that many calories so 20 minutes of cardio 3-4 times a week will never hurt you. Look at how muscular football players are.
I'm 143 lbs and 5'7" and for past month I've been able to do 2x80lb dumbbell chest presses (160 lb total) at 5 - 6 reps. How many reps and sets should I be doing with that weight to build enough muscle in order to bench more weight?
@jgq85 not been funny but to get to the stage of pressing 2x80lb dumbell presses and stil asking questions like that is a bit strange to me,u sure uve not told a little fib about how much weight your lifting?
hi steve i love your videos. ive been lifting seriously for about 6 months now and ive gotten very good gains in strength and mass. One thing ive always wondered: What is more effective for building strength and mass: Bench press or Dumbell Press?
@jpomp333 Bench becuase you can handle heavier weight much easier. I also have a BlogTalkRadio com show. You can listen there or on iTunes. Search Steve Turano. steve, tell me what rep ranges you would use for mass (im gunna laugh at you if you try and tell me that everyone responds to different rep ranges and also if u say the wrong answer) love the videos! Jon :)
@JonathansFilmsInc Lifting HEAVIER weights causes increases in mass. So that could be 4-6-8-reps depending on the person's conditioning. Also depends on the number of set, and exercises done.
@TheMrMonkeyable 12 sets is an easy 4 exercises dude. It isn't over training for individuals who have been working out for 5+ weeks. It is just right. You might be confused as it what he means. 12 exercises per body part would be over training. 4 exercises - 3 sets -with about 8-10 reps is very basic working out. That should = about 40-45 minutes. (not counting stretching with is another 10-15 min)
@TheMrMonkeyable 3-5 sets is very reasonable, intensity is the factor, i dont think you can work intensely for long, means lower sets, the 40-50 set routines illustrated by the muscle mags are the major reason guys give up after a few weeks or so, they do split routines, too many sets dont eat or rest nearly enough and wonder why they are not making gains, remember all the pros are on stuff, their world is irrelevant to the moderate weight trainer
@TheMrMonkeyable It depends on how long and hard you train. How consistently you train. And How muscular you are. Eventurally 3-5 sets won't be enough.
@BodyPerformanceTV This is great, i was waiting to find out why Im not gaining much more mass. I have been weight lifting for 2 years now doing the normal 3-4 sets of 10 and not much has changed. So I will definitley start to apply something more like 9 sets of 6 and see how this goes. I always do for example chest and triceps on one day and do 4 exercises for each muscle group, so 4 exercises for chest and 4 for triceps. Should I still apply this technique or should i think about changing it?
@Samunderwood1000 3-4 exericses per body part with 9-12 WORKING SETS is more than enough. If you're able to do too many exercises and sets then you're not going heavy or hard enough!
@hbedoy0817 You mean forearms. There are no muscles on the wrist. The wrist curl, reverse wrist curl, hammer curl, & reverse barbell curl are good starts.

I was wondering about your take on what my weightlifting coach told us to do when i was in highschool. It was 2 consecutive days of 3 sets of 3 with 90% of max, incline dumbbell, bench dumbbell, lat. pulldowns and rows. Maybe repeat twice a week. The point was max gain for benching, once 3 sets of 3 became 3 sets of 5 you increase the weight by 5lbs.

hey Steve, i am trying to get big muscles but i want to be cut up as well.will lifting heavy weights get you just big and hard.can you get cut with lifting heavy.or will lighter weights get a better benefit?
@The52warriors no the truth is... depends if u r over weight or not. if ur a thin guy or can already see definition then lift heavy only ur muscles will grow and youll be more cut than ever. if u got a lil fat (cant see ur ab muscles) then u gotta burn that to see those cuts u want. cardio is mainly for good lungs and blood flow (important) but not necessarry in achieving definition at all unless u got fat to lose
@DeadHeart150 i am a "big guy".i am not over weight.i just have a little lower belly fat. you can see my upper abs just not the lower.i want to get BIG and cut as well.i don't want to get fat when im building muscle, i have a little fat to lose.but right now I way 180.i don't want to drop my weight. because that would be to light for me. i want to build muscle and i want to get a full 6 pack. "build muscle and lose fat"
@The52warriors then u should lift heavy and add cardio to ur routine to burn that lil bit of fat but note that muscle is dense and fat isnt so 1 lbs. of muscle takes up less space then 1 lbs. of fat. So as ur body becomes more developed u may appear smaller and actually weigh the same or be heavier either way u'll look better cuz what'll change is your body's muscle to fat ratio
@DaOsman1 if you're getting more ripped , ur gettin bigger. the more u can see ur muscles, the more they've grown period. especially if u dont have body fat to lose. And if ur stronger, ur bigger.(doesnt mean the bigger man is stronger but if u've gotten stronger, u've gotten bigger) if ur lifting considerably more than u were ... lets say 1-2 months ago then ur bigger. Get outta the mirror and keep lifting
I always get a good laugh when some newbie comes in the gym and asks for advice, but says "but I dont wanna get too big" hahaha. If only they knew..no1 came to look like Jay Cutler by accident..lmaoo
@taichicraig I think you misunderstood what he meant. He didn't mean do 9-12 sets of each exercise but 9-12 sets for the total for the body part probably broken up into 3 or 4 different exercises. That is typically what I do.
good day sir,ive been wondering if u dont change your workout but still add weight on each sets is it still going to make you big? because some people in the gym tell me that if you dont change ur workout every 3 months it will cause mucle familiarization, meaning it will not have an effect on your muscles anymore..

I cannot do squats very well because I have a bad knee and cannot go full range. Do you think it is possible to build good legs by sticking to front squats, hack squats and leg press? These do not hurt my knee for some reason, but back squats kill them. I know a lot of people say you can't build big legs without squats, but my knee can't handle it.
@Pager1991 I would suggest using the smith machine if you have knee problems. I too have chronic knee pain and find that doing squats on the smith machine are significantly easier on the joints since you can really vary you foot positioning to find something more comfortable.
JESSEBACKMAN99!!! i have been lifting for more than a year but il talking abs u feel like i get more out of doing it 10 tomes then i do say 4 times? bbut more heaveyer
Hi Steve, I would like to start lifting heavier weights, but I find that when I do this, I don't seem to be isolating the chosen muscle because heavier weights seem to make other muscles join in to help the muscle I am working on, and I never seem to get a good pump when I do this. The weight I use now, gives me a great pump during workouts, but the muscles don't seem to get larger, they just become a bit more defined. Any suggestions??

i understand that less reps and more whate is better for size, but for starters for someone small should you do less whate untill you can add whate and do about 8-10 reps at about 3 sets, once you can do more whate or should you just go all out heavy whate at smaller reps like 4-5 untill u can go about 8? thanx
@jessebackman99 Going lighter and easier is always a good idea when just beginning. I would stick with 8-10 reps until you've been lifting for at least a year.
Hey Steve I try to do heavy weight for 10-15 sets but when I bench I lift these heavy weights for about 7-8 sets then I take off the 5 pounds from each side so that I can do the rest of the sets is that ok or should i just stop after the 7-8 reps I do. Thx

@gokunarutosal I think maybe he's considering doing different exercises on the same muscle area. 3 different exercises, each one having 3 sets of repetitions (total: 9 sets).
if it's not the number of contractions but the intensity of contracions, what's the point of doing more than 1-2 reps per set? I do about 6 sets of 3 reps per exersise, and I have been seeing mainly strength gains, but not too much hypertrophy. are there any good studies out there on how many reps I should do or can I only base this on experience

9-12 sets of 6-8 reps (not even counting warm up sets)!?! that extrapolates to 54-96 total repetitions of "heavy weight" without counting warm up sets/reps. overtraining? it just seems like, well, too much. although i'm no expert that's for damn sure. just wondering what the reasoning is behind SO MANY sets when i haven't heard this from other informed sources (human kinetics profs, fitness theory insctructors, fitness conference speakers)?

You should elaborate on the amount of sets. Many bodybuilders hit 9-12 sets easily and it isn't overkill. That's simply 3-4 sets of 6 reps for 3 exercises. For example, bench press, dumbbell fly, incline dumbbell press. Or the deltoids. That's three heads, three sets a piece doesn't seem nearly as large as just saying 9 sets for shoulders. But what does he know, he's just in great shape. That all aside, what's optimal for one person isn't optimal for everyone. Test your own limits.

9-12 sets is over-kill and counter productive, especially when you are lifting heavy. good advice other than the amount of sets.

I eat 1600 calories a day.
elite2291 9 months ago
@elite2291 You have to consume 3000+ calories per day to bulk up. 1600 is nothing, especially if your working out. Increase you calorie intake & get the right amount of of protein in your diet. DIET IS KEY!!! Do more research & you'll get your answer .

Who the hell runs those scientific tests?
RenegadeOfSociety 11 months ago 11
hi steve
are you saying that for bench or what ever i should do 9 sets of 6-8 reps for growth ??
Bigdogg210607 1 year ago
@Bigdogg210607 The number of sets and exercises is going to vary based on a person's conditioning, how long they've been lifting, how hard, etc. I do at least 12 working sets for chest.
BodyPerformanceTV 1 year ago
@BodyPerformanceTV hi steve ive been lifting for about 4 years now and have got some good gains i train 4-5 days a week the norm is 2 on 1 off 2 on 2off . I do 3-4 exercises and 3 work sets of 8 reps each on whatever muscle group I’m working that day. is this ok ??
thanks
Grant
Bigdogg210607 11 months ago
@Bigdogg210607 Sure. The key is giving your muscle enough work (# of exercise, reps, set, weight) to work them hard and then giving them enough rest to recover. So you can do that in 3, 4, or 5 days a week it really doesn't matter. If your schedule works for you, great.

What are the best exercises when trying to lose belly fat?
hbedoy0817 1 year ago
@hbedoy0817 Walking along with dieting.
BodyPerformanceTV 1 year ago
@hbedoy0817 high intensity interval training 30 second jog with 30 second sprint for a total 15 min i do this along with around 3000 cal diet an it burns the fat. i uasally do this after wt training. higher cals and more intensity works great for getting lean and building muscle for me anyways

shoulld i do carido while trying to bulk up
pypox 1 year ago
@pypox Sure. Remember bulking comes from lifting heavy not eating. So just lift heavier and as your appetite picks up you'll gain muscle and size. Cardio doesn't burn that many calories so 20 minutes of cardio 3-4 times a week will never hurt you. Look at how muscular football players are.

I'm 143 lbs and 5'7" and for past month I've been able to do 2x80lb dumbbell chest presses (160 lb total) at 5 - 6 reps. How many reps and sets should I be doing with that weight to build enough muscle in order to bench more weight?

steve, tell me what rep ranges you would use for mass (im gunna laugh at you if you try and tell me that everyone responds to different rep ranges and also if u say the wrong answer) love the videos! Jon :)
JonathansFilmsInc 1 year ago
@JonathansFilmsInc Lifting HEAVIER weights causes increases in mass. So that could be 4-6-8-reps depending on the person's conditioning. Also depends on the number of set, and exercises done.
BodyPerformanceTV 1 year ago
@TheMrMonkeyable 12 sets is an easy 4 exercises dude. It isn't over training for individuals who have been working out for 5+ weeks. It is just right. You might be confused as it what he means. 12 exercises per body part would be over training. 4 exercises - 3 sets -with about 8-10 reps is very basic working out. That should = about 40-45 minutes. (not counting stretching with is another 10-15 min)
hisss711 1 year ago
@TheMrMonkeyable 3-5 sets is very reasonable, intensity is the factor, i dont think you can work intensely for long, means lower sets, the 40-50 set routines illustrated by the muscle mags are the major reason guys give up after a few weeks or so, they do split routines, too many sets dont eat or rest nearly enough and wonder why they are not making gains, remember all the pros are on stuff, their world is irrelevant to the moderate weight trainer
thatwilldonicely 1 year ago
@TheMrMonkeyable It depends on how long and hard you train. How consistently you train. And How muscular you are. Eventurally 3-5 sets won't be enough.
BodyPerformanceTV 1 year ago
@BodyPerformanceTV This is great, i was waiting to find out why Im not gaining much more mass. I have been weight lifting for 2 years now doing the normal 3-4 sets of 10 and not much has changed. So I will definitley start to apply something more like 9 sets of 6 and see how this goes. I always do for example chest and triceps on one day and do 4 exercises for each muscle group, so 4 exercises for chest and 4 for triceps. Should I still apply this technique or should i think about changing it?
Samunderwood1000 1 year ago
@Samunderwood1000 3-4 exericses per body part with 9-12 WORKING SETS is more than enough. If you're able to do too many exercises and sets then you're not going heavy or hard enough!

The52warriors 1 year ago
@The52warriors You will need to lift AND diet. And maybe do cardio.
BodyPerformanceTV 1 year ago 2
@BodyPerformanceTV maybe do cardio? lol you should always do cardio.
300073605 1 year ago
@The52warriors no the truth is... depends if u r over weight or not. if ur a thin guy or can already see definition then lift heavy only ur muscles will grow and youll be more cut than ever. if u got a lil fat (cant see ur ab muscles) then u gotta burn that to see those cuts u want. cardio is mainly for good lungs and blood flow (important) but not necessarry in achieving definition at all unless u got fat to lose
DeadHeart150 1 year ago
@DeadHeart150 i am a "big guy".i am not over weight.i just have a little lower belly fat. you can see my upper abs just not the lower.i want to get BIG and cut as well.i don't want to get fat when im building muscle, i have a little fat to lose.but right now I way 180.i don't want to drop my weight. because that would be to light for me. i want to build muscle and i want to get a full 6 pack. "build muscle and lose fat"
The52warriors 1 year ago
@The52warriors then u should lift heavy and add cardio to ur routine to burn that lil bit of fat but note that muscle is dense and fat isnt so 1 lbs. of muscle takes up less space then 1 lbs. of fat. So as ur body becomes more developed u may appear smaller and actually weigh the same or be heavier either way u'll look better cuz what'll change is your body's muscle to fat ratio
DeadHeart150 1 year ago
i train hard , and lift big weights , but my body only gets ripped ? so do i need to eat more ?
DaOsman1 1 year ago
@DaOsman1 A few extra calories a day will help put on some additional muscle and probably a bit of fat but that will give you mass.
BodyPerformanceTV 1 year ago
@DaOsman1 if you're getting more ripped , ur gettin bigger. the more u can see ur muscles, the more they've grown period. especially if u dont have body fat to lose. And if ur stronger, ur bigger.(doesnt mean the bigger man is stronger but if u've gotten stronger, u've gotten bigger) if ur lifting considerably more than u were ... lets say 1-2 months ago then ur bigger. Get outta the mirror and keep lifting

Thanks

Hi Steve, I would like to start lifting heavier weights, but I find that when I do this, I don't seem to be isolating the chosen muscle because heavier weights seem to make other muscles join in to help the muscle I am working on, and I never seem to get a good pump when I do this. The weight I use now, gives me a great pump during workouts, but the muscles don't seem to get larger, they just become a bit more defined. Any suggestions??

if it's not the number of contractions but the intensity of contracions, what's the point of doing more than 1-2 reps per set? I do about 6 sets of 3 reps per exersise, and I have been seeing mainly strength gains, but not too much hypertrophy. are there any good studies out there on how many reps I should do or can I only base this on experience

@Chaaarge Becasue as you get in better shape your muscle can handle more intense contractions. This is why you need to add more contractions.

I've done middleweights for 1 year now with 3 sets (8-12 reps) each bodypart and 2 bodyparts everytime I train and I train 2-3 times a week. If I wanna do heavy weights now cuz I want volume, do u think I should do 3 sets with 6 reps or more sets for each exercise? Thanks for answer

So two or threee sets of heavy weight won't work if your lifting heavy?
Hillsniper 1 year ago
@Hillsniper That will be enough if you've just started lifting. But as you get stronger you will have to gradually add sets.

hi Steve
Does Improvement in lifting heavier weight means an increase in muscle size or is it just strength without mass ?
alamroX 1 year ago
@alamroX Both size and strngth will occur but strength comes 1st.

@BodyPerformanceTV I know! Jokes aside, this is what I'm doing along with a lot of riding!
TheAtomicDon 1 year ago
@TheAtomicDon That's what we do. Lifting and riding big allows you to eat big and get big (muscular.)

@endermid If it involves static training like isometric skip it.

Mr. Turano, thanks for the video. one question:
9-12 sets of 6-8 reps (not even counting warm up sets)!?! that extrapolates to 54-96 total repetitions of "heavy weight" without counting warm up sets/reps. overtraining? it just seems like, well, too much. although i'm no expert that's for damn sure. just wondering what the reasoning is behind SO MANY sets when i haven't heard this from other informed sources (human kinetics profs, fitness theory insctructors, fitness conference speakers)?

@stevethetree1991 I think he means 9-12 sets per muscle, so if you are doing 3 sets per exercise, that's 3-4 exercises per muscle, which is normal.
