00:57 they took tires on with 3 laps to go on a green flag splash and go stop? doesn't seem like a smart call to me. I'd just take fuel and salvage as many spots as i can instead of wasting time on pit road.
Those old Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupes kicked all sorts of ass in NASCAR competition....hated to see them go in favor of the Lumina. In my opinion, the 80's MCSS was the last of the really hot looking racers.
I remember watching this Daytona 500 with my late grandfather. Darrell Waltrip was his favorite driver, and he was so happy after this race. Waltrip was the only driver that didn't have to make one last pit stop for fuel, and that's why he won. Ken Schrader had the best car that day, and finished second.
If I remember right, Darrell Waltrip was not only driving car #17 on February 17th in his 17th Daytona 500 start, he also started 17th, had pit stall #17, his daughter turned 17 months old on this 17th day of February. WoW, that's alot of 17's!
Many people forget that this was the race where most, if not all the field were on Hoosier tires. Goodyear had come out with a new radial tire, but it failed miserably. It was so bad, NASCAR and Goodyear told the teams to use the Hoosier tire. Goodyear had a new tire by May, and Hoosier pulled out at the end of the year.
well that's good to know but here, in the video the 88 monte carlo is used. I'm sure Chevy was in the makes of finalizing the production car around this time to be used for racing and street. I was kinda wondering why My old nintendo nascar "Bill Elliot's nascar challange" showed a Lumina and a Moncte Carlo in the same pic. Now i know!...
You know, i just realize that the Monte Carlo wasn't avaliable as a production vehicle in 1989. So i take it Chevy was using the 88 body aero coupe body design. Under Nascar's old rules, you are entitle to use a production model that is no more later then 3 years of age. In 1990 chevy introduced the Lumina. So ain't it something that an old production vehicle can still win! HA over new models? Cool Video!
I remember it being mentioned during the Twin 125s in 1989 that NASCAR allowed the Chevy teams to run flush-fitting headlight covers, though Waltrip's Chevy looks like the 1988 one. Take a good look at Schrader and Earnhardt's cars.
With due respect, If it wasn't people like Squier, Joy, Bestwick, and other announcers wouldn't be as good. They're good all because of what Squier did.
Best Daytona 500 finish ever....

13 second pit stop for right side tires and fuel? Nowadays a team can do four tires and full tank in that time...

Their is another VID on you tube that has DW in Victory Lane. Do a search for Daytona 500 88 89 90 and it has a short vid of him in there.

The best commentating team was Bob Jenkins, Benny Parsons and Ned Jarrett for ESPN. I also liked the TNN broadcasting team as well.

I liked all the networks the same back then. CBS and TBS had solid commentary and awesome music (as did ESPN). ESPN and TNN were awesome as well.
I liked Ken Squier. Ned Jarrett and Benny Parsons were my favorites.
