I think some of the demands were genuine. However he was getting support from his Indian friends at the time he made speech. He was right in demanding to become the prime minister but he was totally wrong in demanding independence which cost a lot East Pakistan in terms of human and property loss. Actually,you really should obtain a source of correct historical data. It was we Indians who were attacked firstly by Pakistan on 3rd Dec 71, after the West Pakistan military leaders found out that we were training Mukti Bahini rebels in East Pakistan covertly, as well as ofcourse taking in your refugees. Rebel Bengalis in 71 had no air force, navy or an effective land based defence, hence India had to intervene and assist your fighters,for which we have attained very little thanks from you.

So dont go teaching us history. in return Sheikh Mujib signed treaties between India Bangladesh which was unjust and unfavorable to Bangladesh. Indira Gandhi took advantage of our circumstances, and now India controls our water.

Urdu was only spoken by 25% of the population and Bengali was spoken by 53% of the population. So what was the National language 4 the population ... beng... er no ... URDU! They even tried 2 stop Bengali being taught in schools! This was from the beginning and nothing 2 do with India. Thousands died 2 get this insult overturned.

Sameer I used the Language as an example of alienation - however in a democratic process the majority vote should rile. A compromise could have been met but wasnt until several years later after students sacrificed their lives to get Bengali recognised as a national language.

India of course had an interest in Bangladeshi independence.
The interests are from a political, strategical, economical and of course humanitarian point of view.
Not only did Indians give their lives for Bangladesh independence, they were also attacked by a West Pakistani air force who objected to Indian covert support of the Mukti Bahini.
It was this attacked that justified full indian involvement - a miscalculation by Pakistan.

U r correct that India did give support to Bangadesh but this was originally covert operations: Helping refugees - the majority were hindus (indira Ghandi said she could stand by and see this happen to fellow hindus)who and also to guerrilla efforts.
But remember that Pakistan openly and directly attacked India first in a preemptive strike on Indian airfields. Whats more shameful was that this strike was copied from Israelis pre-emptive strike on Syria, Jordan & Egypt in the famous six day war.

Actually,you really should obtain a source of correct historical data. It was we Indians who were attacked firstly by Pakistan on 3rd Dec 71, after the West Pakistan military leaders found out that we were training Mukti Bahini rebels in East Pakistan covertly, as well as ofcourse taking in your refugees. Rebel Bengalis in 71 had no air force, navy or an effective land based defence, hence India had to intervene and assist your fighters,for which we have attained very little thanks from you.

Thanks but no thanks. The war began in March 26th, 1971 and ended December 16th, 1971. Dec 3 was exactly 13 days...so keepitreal17 is right. India participated right at the end. So dont go teaching us history. in return Sheikh Mujib signed treaties between India Bangladesh which was unjust and unfavorable to Bangladesh. Indira Gandhi took advantage of our circumstances, and now India controls our water.

It is sad what happened in 71. Pakistanis like me can do nothing but accept huge blunders made by the army. Please note that an ordinary Pakistani would never want to shed blood of his brother. I wasnt even alive back then, but thank god i wasnt because I would never want to see Pakistan breaking. We were brothers before, we are long lost brothers today, but we're still brothers and no one can change that.

sammer: to simply blame india and the 1971 war for the problems is not enough. Try imgaine this: At partition there were 60,000,000 west paks and 70,000,000 east paks. Urdu was only spoken by 25% of the population and Bengali was spoken by 53% of the population. So what was the National language 4 the population ... beng... er no ... URDU! They even tried 2 stop Bengali being taught in schools! This was from the beginning and nothing 2 do with India. Thousands died 2 get this insult overturned.

As far as i can understand,
maybe Mr. Jinnah wanted a unifying language in which all Pakistanis regardless of ethnicity could speak with each other.
i think that the basic structure of Urdu is related to most languages at that time making it a central unifying lang.
You cannot expect a punjabi or sindhi to speak in bengali but it is easier for a Bengali to speak in urdu to a punjabi or sindhi.
It can connect ethnicities and prevent communication gap, i hope you know what i mean.

Sameer I used the Language as an example of alienation - however in a democratic process the majority vote should rile. A compromise could have been met but wasnt until several years later after students sacrificed their lives to get Bengali recognised as a national language.
The issue is not really about language but more about alienation. Its more about not being treated equally and being isolated. Another example is of economics ....
