use any type of egg pattern or nymphs fished deep and slow and suckers will take them. they are very important for the stream as they clean the bottom and also where they are the stream is in pretty good condition. in the spring trout will hold behind them and eat their eggs which are sucker spawn, just the right time for some sucker spawn flies...
@pman1256 they are a native fish that are good for our ecosystem throwing them back is the proper thing to do. i dont get why there are so many ignorant close minded anglers who think native rough fish should be killed.
do you mind me asking what kind of flies work for suckers? i have a trout creek near my house loaded with these suckerfish.. i cauht one on my spinning rod today but it would be even more fun on a fly rod. thanks
We get most of them by dead drifting the flies right on the bottom. Some will come up a couple inches in warmer weather, but mainly the smaller fish. They will generally move a few inches to either side as well. If we can see fish that are sluggish, we may hold our flies in front of their face which can produce a take. In late spring we have had them take sizeable streamers worked slow!
in italy it is called "Barbo", dunno the english translation.. but it is 100% a barbo

isnt that a carp i cant really tell because of the angle
MrCod1997 1 year ago
@MrCod1997 definitely a sucker. carp have more girth, shaped like a football, and the scales are much larger.
Fisherboy86 1 year ago
@Fisherboy86 I looked at it again rihgt after i made the coment and saw it was a sucker.
MrCod1997 1 year ago
@MrCod1997 yea it is a carp. there are hundreds of different species of carp in the US. That is one of them. As well all "sucker" fish are carp.

what kind of fly did you use?

San Juan Worms work well in the Summer time. (Like in the video) Sucker Spawns work well in Fall and Spring. Midge pupae work best in Winter.
